Canada's best team would look like...

Todd Bertuzzi - Mario Lemieux - Martin St. Louis
Brad Richards - Joe Sakic - Jarome Iginla
Ryan Smyth - Vincent Lecavalier - Shane Doan
Rick Nash - Joe Thornton - Simon Gagne

Chris Pronger - Scott Niedermayer
Rob Blake - Adam Foote
Wade Redden - Eric Brewer

Martin Brodeur
Roberto Luongo

IMO that is unbeatable.
Wait a minute, no Dany Heatley?!?

He was hitting his skates. It's hardly the big deal everyone is making it out to be.

Besides Smyth was taking crosschecks in the back from Fischer all night long. You don't hear us whining about that.

You know what, reading the posts in this thread with all these wusses whining about a couple of love taps from Smyth has convinced me that the vast majority have not even watched the game. I say this because there is NO WAY they'd be making such a big fuss about this had they actually seen what went down.

That kinda stuff happens ALL THE TIME in hockey.

Yep, but the difference is that Smyth is Canadian and Fischer isnt...

Someone should post the video of the play...

Some of those hits were slashing the ankles. Besides, a captain is not supposed to lead by an example like that.

Oh so you think what Smyth has done is not a big deal? It doesn't matter if he was hitting him the skates or legs or whatever. You know what he really wanted to do to Fischer :nopity:

Wait... Its no Peewee Hockey... The other guys know what to do, they are old enough... its not because he is captain that everybody will start doing the same... He was the captain because he played lot of international games. The Real captain of Team Canada was Martin Brodeur.

By the way, today, captaincy doesnt mean much... its only a "C" on a jersey...

Are you even Canadian?

You're slagging Smyth, but I bet you would defend Bertuzzi until you're blue in the face.

Félicitations, guys! The best TEAM won.

They don't have the flashiest of players, but they played like a team. They deserved the gold this year.

Just read some Ovechkin comments after the bronze medal game. He's still b$itching about yesterday's contest. This kid will have to calm down a little in the NHL. Or he'll get wacked as much as pretty boy Illya got pummeled the first 2-3 seasons in the league.

Mind you, I don't think we have to put them as hands on favs for the Olympics. If ALL the pros are in, Canada is still far and away the best team. With the likes of Sakic, Iginla, St-Louis (the 3 best forwards last season), Lecavalier, Niedermayer (best d in the NHL, and DOMINANT during the world cup), et al., we won't have to suffer thru some more Draper/Maltby ad nauseam. I like the guys, but it takes some goals to win a game. This canadian B- squad had no 2nd line. Let's face it. When you have to bring up guys like Mike Fisher, it tells you a lot about the no-shows.

If the pros are out, then I'm anxious to see Yan Alston wearing the red and white jersey :D

Luongo gets big time ***** despite taking the 'W' vs. the Czechs at the World Cup, and Brodeur get nothing for his 3-0 World Championships loss.

The Philanderous One can do no wrong! :dunce:

I've seen frustration before but I've never I've seen those love taps. I was so embarrassed when I saw that. I have to give you this though, it always happens against the Czechs. It is always them that bring out the worse in us so I'm convinced that the Czechs are more of a pain than other national teams. Still, the Czechs must have used their tactics on other teams too but it's only Canada that go all crazy. Canadians need to have more control of their emotion. That's all I'm asking.

For Christ's sakes guys, the guy he was slashing isn't 5'7, 150. The guy can defend himself and looked more surprised than anything. Smyth had clearly stopped being an effective hockey player but I think it's fair to say this thread has blown the play out of proportion.

Want to get upset about a Canadian hockey player doing something completely vicious? Clarke versus Kharlamov.

Yeah but look at our team at the World Cup, we still had Draper, Maltby and Morrow! We could have had much better players, yet the management chose them. I don't know why Canada likes to bring grinders so much. I believe in tournaments like the Olympics, our best players are ready to do anything for the team and will play more defensively if asked. Above all, we need to score which we weren't able to today.

If the NHL would participate in the next Olympic and if I was the manager of Team Canda, this would be my team:

Rick Nash - Joe Sakic - Jason Spezza
Paul Kariya - Vincent Lecavalier - Martin St. Louis
Brad Richards - Daniel Brière - Dany Heatley
Simon Gagne - Joe Thonrton - Jarome Iginla

Scott Niedermayer - Rob Blake
Jay Boowmeester - Adam Foote
Chris Pronger - Wade Redden
extra: Eric Brewer

Martin Brodeur
José Théodore
Roberto Luongo

Those are two different situations. Clarke was a premeditated and vicious act and I'm ashamed of that. I'm not ashamed of what Smyth did, I'm just embarrased. Smyth wasn't vicious, he just lost his mind.

Maybe these "so-called Canadians" simply want to watch good, clean hockey, not little babies getting frustrated because they can't win and resorting to swinging their sticks as a way of letting out some frustration.

Why would you be? You have no control over what some hockey player does, and it isn't like Canadians run around with pieces of wood slashing away at ankles all day long.

It was a play by a clearly frustrated hockey player who was no longer really playing hockey. In fact it was such a dummy play that imo you couldn't come up with any rational reason for it except he went postal.

But he didn't pick on a 5'7, 150 pound guy he went after a big oak. The big oak could have flattened him but didn't since it was bordering on hilarious and the game was over.

Gagne - Draper - Doan

Pronger - Niedermayer
Jovanovski - Foote
Redden - Hannan/Bouwmeester

Brodeur

Canada's depth at RW is insanely good.

I'm embarrassed that certain so called Canadians are siding with the Euros on this whole "Canada is too mean" sentiment. Maybe you can all get together for the World Ringette Championships. You can drink wine spritzers, and talk about your feelings in between periods.

I'm proud of Smyth. I just wish he took him down at the knees instead of wacking his skates.
It's not because I critcize Canada or a Canadian that I'm less of a Canadian. It's because of my love of Canada that I criticize it. I want Canada to be the best and to show the world that we are a great nation. If you accept anything no matter how stupid just because it's Canadian, you're only harming your country. Only by recognizing your weaknesses can you improve. Deny and you will never get better.

Newsflash. There is no such thing as clean hockey anymore. It's international hockey, it's war. You're either with us or against us. I didn't realize Prince George was annexed by Sweden.

Ryan Smyth has represented his country everytime he has been asked:

7 World Championships
World jr.s
World Cup
Olympics

I guess its mainly anti-Oiler sentiment from the Canuck fans. I don't see why though. I had no problem cheering for Jovo or Morrison.

You typify the sort of lame rah-rah homers that seem to swarm this board during international competitions. Leave the "you're with us or against us" crap to George W. Bush.
