Congratulations to the Czech Republic on the gold medal. The best team won today.

Congratulations to Canada on the Silver medal. It was an up and down tournament for the team IMO, so winning silver is an accomplishment.

With the play of Thorton, Nash, Gagne, Redden, it will be interesting to see who gets picked for the Olympic team. That is assuming the NHL has a contract by then.

To my fellow Canadian fans: stop making excuses, all the teams in this tourney were missing key players. We lost, accept it.

i was only replying to wilka's post saying that the russian were missing more key players than Canada...

I accept it that we lost, the Czechs were way better than our team today

... let them believe whatever they want to, it's a North American board anyway

Even if it was "lucky"... It was still a goal...

Thats what you, europeans doesnt understand most of the time...

Luck is part of Hockey and lot of sports (even soccer) ...

The best teams have more luck because they make luck happens...

Congrats to the Czech Republic they really outplayed the Canadian team and I'm happy for them. Vokoun just showed the world that he was a really really good goalie.

replace doan with heatley and u have a good team

You could replace Doan with Ben Clymer and that would still be a good team. Heck, Canada's current team is, on paper, the best in the tourniment. They just didn't play like it.

all i can say is it's back to no hockey ( no offense other league's ) that was truly an awesome show in most respects -

100% agreed. :handclap:

For those that think the World Cup of Hockey was a 1st tier event, you are sadly mistaken. Canada had every advantage in that tournament. They were the only nation to play all of their games at home. The World Championships is not second tier. The Czechs beat us legitimately, and deserve every praise they get.

I hate these arguments, "oh yeah, we were missing so and so..." As mentioned countless times, every team was.

Um, they won the game. They also dominated the tournament. They did not come even somewhat close to losing a single game minus the one against the Czechs. Every other game they blew the other team out of the water. They were not beaten, so they very well may be called unbeatable.

I would not call the 3-2 final victory a blowout, but hey, whatever gets you through the night I guess. The point is when the going got tough, they sure looked beatable to me. That said, they did win the tourney back then and congrats for that.

"Among the toughest of all athletes are the offensive linemen in the NFL. Their job is to protect the quarterback, so their team can keep moving the chains toward the goal line. When the opponent punches them, steps on their hands, calls them names or spits in their face -- the offensive linemen don't retaliate, because the penalty would be too damaging to the team.

This is genuine toughness."

See? Who´s the tougher one? Smyth or Fisher?

And you never see offensive linemen take stupid penalties out of frustration?

Added to that, offensive linemen dish it out just as much as the defensive linemen and linebackers do, so it's pretty much a moot point.

All in all, that was probably the dumbest comment I have ever seen on these boards.

I like you. That's exactly what I think. I would just add that the World Cup is played after the summer vacation, something that goes against the logic of a real International tournament when the players should be selected based on their performance during the current season, not the previous one.

To clear up something, Smyth and Fischer have had something going on between the two since the 2001-02 season I believe it was. That's not to say what Smyth did was right; just saying there was bad blood before.

I also would like to mention that this was totally out of character from Smyth... Oiler fans have watched him in the copper and blue for eight seasons and never once did we see him 'lose it' like today. Maybe Fischer said something or did something to him earlier in the shift, I'm not sure.

At least it was just the ankle/foot and not the head/chest, and that Fischer wasn't hurt.

Ronald Pagan, I am not sure if he saw a shift after the first, but if he didn't, my guess would be because of his coverage on the first goal.

I really wonder what was going on in Smyth's head. I've never seen something like this before.

I thought Jovanovski was the one who blew that coverage. Maybe I'm just trained to think that.
It was Souray that was "checking the post" as Healy put it.

mr. gib -- what?

Jeez.

The minute Canada does something remotely negative, you harp on it for pages and pages.

Talk about an inferiority complex! Does it really make you feel THAT good that Canada did something frowned upon?

By the way, I'm assuming you've never played competitive hockey in your life, or else you'd know exactly what was going on in Smyth's head.

Congratulations to the Czech team, awesome result.

Special mention to the Canadian fans on this board.

Very, very impressed with how gracious the vast majority have been over this loss, well done, pleased to see how sporting you've been.

Does anyone have a clip of the Smyth incident?

Good game Czech Republic. I am really impressed by Jagr's game and I am excited to see if he can be as dominant as before when he returns to NHL.

From my point of view Souray's coverage was good... and from the two guys on TV (RDS) point of view too...

Listen to all these Euros, and Americans whine about a little stick work from Smyth. It's a contact sport you pansies. If you don't like it go watch somthing else.

It's a contact sport but hitting a guy with a stick multiple times is not part of hockey.

It was barely a slash. He hit him in the skate. I get hit in the skate about a thousand times a game.

He was hitting his skates. It's hardly the big deal everyone is making it out to be.

Besides Smyth was taking crosschecks in the back from Fischer all night long. You don't hear us whining about that.
