I was thinking about that when the incident happened. Cherry would probably say, "Look at that passion. Good Canadian kid. I tell ya what boy, nobody loves Canada as much as Ryan Smyth. If somebody wants to insult Canada, you'd better be prepared to fight boy."

Haha :D Yeah something like that, he´s a funny dude!

Bravo to the Czechs, they did everything right. All of our shots were pretty lousy, we were simply beatten by a better team, no question about it.

I was a little bit sad for the lost but frankly at the end, I was more embarrassed at some of our players, namely Ryan Smith. Is he a mad man? I'm surprised he acted like that. I mean geez, what was the point? We already lost at that point, did he really had to make a fool of himself and make Canada look bad on top of that? Sorry but that was SOOOOO stupid.

If a Canadian had done that, he would have been suspended. If a Canadian does that, it's big news. It was cowardly. He cross-checked him in the back. If that was one of our guys he'd be called a hooligan or a goon. There was a spear and a cross-check on the same play. There were four or five blatant penalties. There should be two or three suspensions. If we do it we're hooligans. If the Europeans do it , it's OK. It's a crock of crap.

Guess who said this.

Anyway, I'm really impressed with the Czechs! So much toughness and team spirit... Fascinating! Everything was clicking perfectly on that team!

But I have to say that for me the game was really boring!

Being tough is a must in hockey but I didn´t see a least bit of toughness in what Smyth did at the end. I think it´s tragic.

express yourself better next time because you used the word tough 2 times when you talked about smyth... before the mod changed your comment

No, it was Gretzky during the 2002 Olympics. I just thought back to it when Smyth took his swings.

I didn't agree with what Gretzky said, but I understood its purpose (and ultimately, if you want to say it helped Canada, it did). But it is kind of funny if you look at it now. Hamrlik's actions on Fleury were nowhere near Smyth's actions on Fischer.

We have a guy in Sweden who is just like Cherry but the opposite way. He HATES all Northamerican/Canadiens and he is just sooo stupid. Leif Boork is his name by the way :) He says that Mario Lemieux is a myth. Every player in the NHL plays bad against Mario just to make him the big star and the posterboy the league needs. He´s soooo sick!

Congratulations to Czech rep! They did a great job of shutting down Canada.

It is not that I want to rub it in, but it is something that has to be said! Canadians showed in this tournament that they aren't classy and don't know how to accept a loss.

Canada lost two games and in both games they did something that should never happen in this game. It was Nash hooking the ref and Smyth trying to cut Czechs' legs. Who the hell they think they are?!
I don't think what Nash did was for being a bad loser. He was just too insistent of passing his message to the ref. It was a stupid action but not because of the lost. Ryan Smith though I don't know what to say, it was embarassing.

Put yourself in Smyth's shoes. You're team is getting smothered. They're having a hell of a time generating shots on net. Fischer is getting under everyone's skin all game long. Time is running out, you're on a 2-on-1, it gets broken up. I'd be pretty damn frustrated myself.

I am not defending what Smyth did. It was wrong, it was stupid, and I'm sure he realizes that after being able to cool off. However, I understand his frustration.

Yeah, Don Cherry would probably say something like "Look at that nasty stickwork by that chicken euro hiding behind his visor". :biglaugh:

Jeez... Everyone here who is having a hissy fit over what Smyth did obviously have never played hockey before. Or at least never lost a meaningful game.

Seriously guys, don't you have any competitive spirit?

It goes beyond hockey, too. Name a competitive sport and you can find a similar situation.

I agree with waffledave. I've already lost a final of a tournament and at the end of the game, all you want is decapitate the other team, no matter who they are.

That said, I understand the emotions behind his actions. The frustration of a highly competitive player bubbling over in a confrontation with his opponent who has shut him and his team down all game.

I agree. You could also see by the way the Czech reacted that they didn't see it as a overly dirty play. Just someone loosing it...

If Smyth wanted to injury someone he wouldn't have whacked at someones skates.

Pretty much. It isn't something to be smiled upon, but this stuff happens.

That's something I haven't thought about, like I'm sure many others haven't either. You're correct. Judging by the Czech's reactions, it seems they knew it wasn't anything extraordinary.

I understand his frustration but COME ON, he didn't have to give a thousand slashes at a guy's feet. That was just useless. No matter what he'd done, at that point there was no way Canada could have come back so better just let it go. Instead, Canada looks stupid. No wonder Europeans think we're all goons. They have good reasons after all. Control yourself for crying out loud.

I don´t see the competitive in Smyth´s action. If he had thrown a really hard check or something else but he acts like a coward.

IMHO the Canadians LACKED competitive spirit today, and Smyth's stick work were the result. :shakehead

Touche, but if you play competitive sports you should know where Smyth's frustration is coming from.
