Tavares would be a more impactful UFA than Hossa was, and he's arguably the best UFA signing of the last 10 years.

We're not talking Paul Stastny here. He's an excellent player and would give us a filthy 1-2 punch at center and give us one of the best top 6's in the league

DBC-Toews-Saad
Schmaltz-Tavares-Kane

And one of the worst bottom 6 in the league. You don't win cups without rolling 4 forward lines, typically.

I'm under the impression we're all only considering Tavares if we move one of Hossa or AA. If we just sign without moving cap out then yes I agree, we'd be too top heavy to compete

@Robsker you are forgetting something really significant: our current players could/will develop to better players.

In fantasy world, if we had Tavares, our forward core would be very, very good. Or are you slotting Sikura and Hinostroza in to 4th line so you can get two better 3rd liners?

I’m not saying you are completely wrong with your post but it just seemed like you are forgetting natural developing. Of course our D would not still be enough (well if Forsling goes full McAvoy mode, Keith goes 2015 form and Rutta is the new Kevan Miller).

If we’d acquire Karlsson, our team would look like this:

DeBrincat - Toews - Saad
Hayden - Schmaltz - Kane
Sikura - Anisimov - Hinostroza
Kahun - Kämpf - Wingels

Keith - Karlsson
Forsling - Murphy
Gustafsson - Rutta
Seabrook

That doesnt look bad at all if Toews plays better, Kane is Kane, Keith plays better and young guys plays at least in last seasons form. Adding Karlsson could be huge.

Of course he would command 10mil per and rightfully so, but I am just talking about next year and if the team wants to win, that team could do it if all stars are in right order.

Hossa is looking to be the more likely candidate to move now that he has basically said he'll never play again. That means he's LTIRetired. AA, with his limited NTC, isn't going to be that easy to move in comparison to Hossa's dead contract. He will have to go to one of 10 teams he submits, and those 10 teams have to have a need for him, and be willing to part ways with some kind of asset, which could possibly be a player coming back the other way if they don't have/don't want to move the pick(s), which still minimizes the cap relief for moving his contract.

Tavares is a 27 year old franchise talent. You add him all day every day and figure out the bottom six later.

I just don't agree on this one, as I've stated above in numerous posts. I don't want to tie up 10m in cap space on another player. That would mean Toews, Kane, Tavares, and Seabs make up 45% of your cap. I think it's just not worth it to put the team in cap hell, and lose all depth in the process. Tavares signing without anything else being done means Hino and Hayden aren't going to get contracts as RFAs. There just wouldn't be enough cap space unless Tavares comes in around 8m and Hino/Hayden only get about 1-1.5m apiece, which is probably not realistic in any way.

I just don't see any way to bring Tavares in without decimating the bottom 6, which means you're not winning anyways. There are too many holes to fill. It's not like Tavares puts this team into contender status all on his own. There are too many holes on D, in net, and in the bottom 6 then.

Forgetting Ejdsell. He's probably on this roster next season. And you're making the assumption that Q... in all his infinite wisdom, bumps the 7m Seabrook to a 7th D/press box role. Not gonna happen based upon the fact that he was seeing top pairing minutes last season still... And... with a 10m contract added next season, Hayden and Hino won't fit. So scratch those two from your lineup and add two kids into it.

I think we all are talking hypothetical here and how we individually would build the team or coach it.

Yeah, for the most part. But I prefer a realistic approach as opposed to everything going perfect dream scenarios. Realistically, Tavares or EK coming in at 10m wipes out any kind of depth on this roster. And depth is what wins Cups.

Get lucky in the draft, and draft one of Tkachuk, or Wahlstrom.

DBC - Tavares (10mil)- Kane
Saad -Toews - Nash (2mil)
Tkachuk/Wahlstrom - Schmaltz - Sikura
Hino - Hayden - Kahun
Jurco

Keith - Murphy
XXXX - Ruuta
Gustafsson - Seabrook

Crawford
Forsberg

Leaves about 4-5mil to sign a top 4D man. (80mil cap)

How, though?

Moving both AA and Hossa's contract?

There's no way that roster adds up to less than 80m without moving both, especially leaving 4-5m in space for a top 4 D. Hino and Hayden aren't even signed yet.

It's not the bottom 6 I'm worried about--it's the backend. Tavares+Kane+Debrincat+Crawford+16 other guys doesn't get you much better than the results of 2016.

If we blagged Tavares it would be awesome, but we still need more than 1 player added on the back end who can actually play defense.

Yeah, and Duclair gone.
What are Hino/Hayden signed at?

I'm trying to build this roster on capfriendly and just don't see it happening. It's a pipe dream. The odds of moving both AA and Hossa's contract? Plus signing Tavares, and Nash, and Hino/Hayden at discount contracts, plus a top 4 D?

I think I had Hino at 1.5, and Hayden at 1.2. I don't see it costing much to move Hossa and AA out. If Hayden or Hino don't want those cheap contracts, trade them. They aren't worth getting upset about.

Hino is probably getting 2m or so. He was already making 1m or so with bonuses. AA will be harder to move, cost isn't the issue. He has a limited NTC, only 10 teams that he submits, and one of those teams has to want/need him, and be willing to give up assets for him.

Again, it just seems like a pipe dream. I highly doubt the Hawks can move both AA and Hossa's contract.

Sure, if that happens, then maybe they can make it all work. But you're talking ideal dream scenario. Not nearly realistic, IMO.

And btw, that roster leaves about 4m in cap space for a top 4 D? Who is the top 4 D who is coming to the Hawks at that cost? And are you not figuring in cost of the drafted player in Wahlstrom or Tkachuk? Because they're likely guaranteed to have rookie performance bonuses that they'll hit.

That still leaves the question of Crow, and is he healthy enough to return? And if not, who is your starting goalie, and who is your backup?

Again, Tavares just doesn't make sense right now. Way too many holes on this team to bring in a guy who absolutely will not put the Hawks into contender status with their current roster, and the holes in it. So you're digging into cap hell when Schmaltz and Cat need to be re-upped... and not even coming close to getting a Cup out of it, IMO.

If Hino wants 2mil+, I would say ...c ya.

I don't think NTC really have that much pull, lots of players submit a list and then get traded to a team not on their list. They don't necessarily need assets in return for AA either, trade him for Future Considerations if need be.

Obviously it's a dream, but it's possible to do cap wise.

DeHaan sounds like a guy BUT I doubt he wants to take shorter deal which Hawks can afford.

Like I edited, also. That's figuring on what cost of the rookie drafted at #8? Because you figure 1-2m there, at least, with performance bonuses. So you're down to like 2-3m for a top 4 D?

Right, that's all I'm pointing out with the Tavares lineups/dreams people are having. It would have to have absolutely everything go the Hawk's way. Everything. And still leaves questions/holes in places. It's just not realistic to me in any way.

As far as Hino, I think he's worth 2x3 or something along those lines. He's probably going to round into a 25-35 point bottom 6 forward. He was underrated big time last year on here. I was guilty of it, and had to eat crow on him.
