The idea that SY did not put any effort in determining market value for Walman is simply ridiculous. It happened three days before the Draft, every GM is talking with each other. It was more than two months after the season ended and the team's verdict on Walman. SY is stubborn, but he's also a bit of a micro-manager. He's not going to make a trade or signing without knowing market value. Walman was an unwanted player with two years left at $3.4M. There doesn't have to be a specific purpose for the Cap space if removing him from the roster is the primary objective. On a decent team he is a 4-6 D with no significant special teams ability. The simplest explanation is that no one wanted Walman for free, A) because of the two-year Cap hit; B) because of points and a good shot inflating his modest true value as a player; and C) for generally known knowledge of baggage "issues". The cost to move him was not some random value, it was the same cost as Ottawa and St. Louis paid to get rid of unwanted players making close to the same AAV as Walman.
You really think, objectively, he had no value to any team out there? Get real.

That's a good question that none of us have even close to the full information to answer.
Nah, Nnowski is probably very close to what actually happened, lol.

It was an unbelievably dumb trade at the time. The bits of information leaking out through Petes have not made much better in my view. This was a mistake. Full stop.

Might as well move on I guess.
no, this will be yzerman's hossa vs franzen talking point that troll's will fall back on whenever they dont have anything else to bitch about until the end of time

good times

The most annoying part of the hossa vs franzen issue, is that was never the issue. We wanted both and made a serious effort to keep hold of both.

People are really tore up over a 2nd round pick, especially after Yzerman got a free 2nd rounder in the Nashville trade. I'm surprised the Walman trade is still some point of contention.

The Nashville Predators have acquired defenseman Andrew Gibson from the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for forward Jesse Kiiskinen and a second-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft

This team plays with very little heart or emotion - most nights it doesn't appear they came to play. Walman brought it every night and had a fire, a defensive fire we currently need. People can post about how horrid the trade was, and it was but it was equally as bad for losing a solid player that had attitude. About half the games this year I've turned off cause they are boring to watch.

Doesn't mean you just give away an asset you just got for nothing. If it was because trouba then he should have waited till that deal was 100%

That walman deal will never make sense. Torn up over a 2nd rd pick or not

Yes because a 2nd round pick has never amounted to anything in the history of the nhl.

If you're hanging all your hopes on a bottom 4 dman with some possible personality issues (nobody knows outside management what happened between Walman and DRWs org, but something went sideways). That's probably why Walman had no value. I put Vrana and Walman in the same box.

Walman was healthy scratched during the most important stretch of the season for a reason Something happened. Yzerman will never disclose it to you and neither will SJS.

At the end of the day Yzerman made DRWs whole after getting rid of cancer. That's good GMing.

That's not true. 2nd round picks can turn into steals (not often, but sometimes). That's why I praise Yzerman for landing the free 2nd rounder from Nashville! That's good asset managment.

I know I was being sarcastic. That's why the Walman trade was terrible.

Are you privy to inside information the rest of us don't have access to?

Because I'd love to hear the reason why Walman was healthy scratched down the stretch when he was needed the most. Apparently something happened and brass wanted him gone at any expense. Please share!

I dont care what the reason he was healthy scratched. It's a terrible trade.

If a team had to add a second every time they wanted to ditch a player you'd see it happen all the time but you dont.

Yzerman ditched cancer and nipped it in the bud before it spread throughout the locker room and destroyed the culture of the team.

Unless you have some privy inside knowledge, then that's what I'm going to believe. You don't healthy scratch good players unless something bad was happening behind the curtain that desperately needed nipped.

I suspect the truth is Yzerman didn't want to lie about Walman's core issues (and cover up) to prospective trade partners because GMs have reputations they need to keep. Are you a used car salesman by trade? You sound like one of you believe that's how Yzerman needs to do business 'to get one over on someone'.

One player does not destroy a culture. Darren McCarty didnt destroy the culture, that's a lame ass excuse.

You are allowed to think whatever you like. Im equally allowed to think that Yzerman jumped the gun to open up space for Trouba and was burnt.

Used car salesmen angle is very funny I will admit.

There is a world of difference with regards to coaching and peer to peer leadership between the teams that McCarty played on and the current team.

And if the culture disagreement in question is dedication and personal sacrifice for the good of the team, McCarty isn't really a good example either.

Sure but I still dont think one player going to ruin the culture on this team to the extent.

Dylan Larkin legitimately one of the greatest leaders in sport with regards to his will/dedication to win and his character.

And he stated at training camp that some weren't pulling their weight in the spring and that in the offseason it was dealt with.

If you consider Larkin legitimately one of the greatest leaders in sport, why question what I'm sure he's ok with?

What culture are we trying to save? Have we been some winning, upbeat organization that was at risk with Walman on the team? This team took a step back with this trade - nothing was saved. If anything the team last year was fun and had fight - most games this year could be turned off early. The trade was horrible and I still miss Walman.
