If that is your standard, then you can look at the 2nd round drafts since 2019 and see nobody hit. Jeeze man, you are making a name for yourself here. You might want to stop.

How do you expect Yzerman to "hit" when NO GM HAS HIT based on your standards!!1!!!1?????
There are currently 7 NHL regulars drafted outside of the 1st round playing in the NHL from the 2019 draft. The odds are not in your favour that's true, but Yzerman hasn't been any better than Holland for drafting

That's a false premise though. Are you seeing someone argue that?

I'm looking at the draft and I don't see anyone worth being all tore up about not drafting. Yes, I would love Yzerman to draft the next Datsyuk in the 2nd round, but do Wings really need a bunch of Oskar Sundqvist -type players?

Hey, maybe Yzerman did draft the next Palat, he is just being overrippend. Who knows. We won't know what we have for a few more years.

Might want to recalibrate on what constitutes middle 6 and/or top 4. I'm not coming up with double-digits...

I have no idea what you're trying to say. It reads like garbled word salad.

Yzerman got rid of cancer for a 2nd after Yzerman scored a free 2nd in a trade for a prospect that we had in abundance. ASP likely made Gibson expendable. Jesse Kiiskinen is damn good prospect in his own right.
we got a 2nd in a hockey deal. It wasn't a "free" asset no matter how many times you try to spin your jibba jabba

He definetly wasn't a player that needed to have a high pick attached to get rid of and it wasn't a free pick we moved . I'm done here cause this will just go on for weeks at this point

Who are these 7 impact players? I don't trust you are honest in your assessments. You are probably referring to tweeners that wouldn't even beat out Copp on our roster.

2nd out, 2nd in. Wings are whole in draft picks and arguably have the better young prospect in Jesse Kiiskinen. I'm not saying Gibson isn't great or a bust, but I think Jesse Kiiskinen is more likely to have the better chance at an NHL future.

Walman had no future in Detroit. He was a healthy scratch for a reason. Now he is on a tanking team maybe he can fix his issues, whatever it may be. The 2nd is insignificant because it was replaced. It certainly isn't worth the time writing about it on a message forum.... yet here we are.

Pinto, Hoglander, Vlasic, Protas, Maccelli, Voronkov, Dorofeyev. All capable NHL players who are top 9/4 qualify

Have you guys seen this guy, Second Round Pick. He is lighting up the OQWSKLHL this season. He has a record number of highlight reel plays for any underage and undersized premium high end power forward big hit defender hybrid goalie.

If you have 2 2nd's..It's just fine to throw one away? I don't agree.

To clear 7 million (3.4x2) for the next two years on a guy that's apparently cancer in the locker room? Sure.

I doubt Yzerman would've been prompted to trade Gibson to get that free 2nd if not for Walman. Who knows, Jesse Kiiskinen could end up being the real difference maker in 3 yrs. All because of Walman.

Ummm... pinto wasn't even available when Yzerman was drafting. But I digress, none of those guys would beat out players Yzerman landed on the UFA market.

You are brave for posting that list tho, I'll give you that. Lol.

Signing a 27 year old in FA to play a few years for your team in a depth role just doesn't hit the same as developing a 6th round pick for 9 years until they're finally ready to play that depth role, allowing you bragging rights about the team's ability to find NHLers outside the 1st round.

I liked how Holland drafted in rounds 2-7 better, especially under Nill.

Even when it didn't work out drafting guys like Jurco, Pulkkinen, Sproul, etc. makes a ton of sense to me.

Sometimes I just don't get what this current front office is going for.

Mazur will be in the NHL before you know it and you'll have your bragging rights. Meanwhile you can brag about AlJo.

No it doesnt. We could have made the Gibson deal and got the 2nd + kiiskinen and kept walman
Not if one wanted the immediate capspace for whatever one was trying to do. The capspace was wanted then not in August or September.

There is indications that other teams would have interest, there is no indications they would pull off a trade at that time when FA was around the corner.

The team is allowed to be 10% over the cap before the season. That freed up cap space went to Gus/Tank. It would have been cheaper to keep Walman and Sprong.

I'm just assuming Walman got caught peeing in the zamboni trough, because it's the only logical explanation.

The consensus on the trade board was it should have been 1-for-1, and people where ripping Trotz for throwing in the 2nd. I agree with the consensus. It was a free 2nd.
No they never should have traded Wallman or Gibson they were both bad trades.

Honestly the Gibson for Kiiskinen + a 2nd trade is looking great so far. Kiiskinen is playing well, better than Gibson whom I never projected well anyway. I wish we didn't use the bonus second as ammunition to blow our foot off, but one bad trade doesn't change that the first trade was a good one. Yzerman and his yes men grouped them together to make us feel like there was no cost to the Walman trade. For the same reason that that was clearly silly mental gymnastics, so too would it be to condemn the gibson trade because of the Walman one. They were separate events. One is a solid trade. The other is a failure.

For better or worse, Yzerman is big on personality and once he doesn't like you, you're out the door. Walman did something that made Yzerman dislike him. A few guys on the team- Larkin- seem to have probably felt similarly to Stevie Y. At least a few bits of evidence point to it being related to Walman struggling to come back from injury and the team feeling that he could have tried harder, wasn't as injured as he made out to be, and/or didn't work through the pain well enough when in the lineup. Perhaps he had too much fun on vacation in Tampa too. Perhaps there's something totally unrelated that we never even got word of- the proverbial zamboni trough piss.

My personal opinion is that this was ridiculously stupid regardless. We had a ton of bad defenseman to get rid of, and we chose one of the good ones. We moved him at a time when he had no value and in an apparent panic. If we did this that fast because we can't tolerate having someone we don't like on the team dress for us, I think that's a little immature, but I do understand how important team buy-in can be. If someday we're in the playoffs and we're watching every guy give every ounce of their being to will the team to victory, that will be a nice consequence of this mentality.

The more worrying notion is that perhaps this was done to free up cap space in a desperate gamble to acquire Jacob Trouba. He's another washed up echo of his former self that we should know would be an immediate disaster on our blue line in anything more than a third pairing role (like every defenseman we sign/trade for). That notion terrifies me most of all as it indicates this "bring in bad defenseman" strategy isn't the "there's no sense paying assets to bring in good defenseman before the kids are ready, so we'll acquire stop gaps from the bargain bin" strategy that we delude ourselves into believing it is. Trying to bring in Trouba implies that Steve Yzerman watches Jeff Petry, Ben Chiarot, Justin Holl, and Jacob Trouba play defense and says to himself "oh yeah, I want more of that on my team." If so, this team is doomed unless our prospects just turn out to be so good that we never acquire pro scouted defenseman in the Yzerman era. It doesn't matter how much buy-in you get from garbage players. They're going to give you garbage results.

Regardless, the final result is that we have a terrible defense having lost our second best defender. Edvinsson has fortunately managed to succeed being thrust immediately into a top pairing role with some of the hardest minutes in the league. Unfortunately, Petry and Chiarot on the second pairing together have not faired nearly as well.
