I’m hoping theirs a handshake deal where SJ takes on some salary in another deal. I like Walman more than some on defense but I didn’t see him in my ideal red wings roster. I think the defense is in for a major overhaul this summer

Help me understand this. I’m not reading 11 pages to see it unfold. Someone please help me understand this one. Normally I can see the logic behind moves but this appears to make no sense.

He wasn’t contracted long term. He wasn’t contracted for much of a cap hit. He was a good player. And we give him up, PLUS a 2nd, for nothing.

WHAT??

Some speculate it's to clear cap/roster spot for a big name d man.

Some speculate it's to clear cap space for a top 6 player

Some speculate he has off ice issues that Steve didn't like.

Some speculate the future considerations could be if our guy is available at 14, that SJ would swap the 14 for the 15 pick.

Most of all, it's just speculation.

Until it all unfolds, no one knows.
What are the future considerations? Is it a move that is just a cog in a much bigger deal? Is it simply a cap dump to sign Ghost/Kane? If it's a cap dump, why not try waving him first? Is there off ice issues known around the league?

This is a trade that will make sense in a week or two. One way or the other.

It's probably just the frustration speaking, but this move feels like an inflection point for me. Even if Walmans value was actually this low around the league, I don't think it reflects any better on the front office.

The past two years we have signed Holl, Copp, Chariot, Walman, Maatta, Petry, and Husso (maybe I'm missing some) to contracts which we apparently would need to pay significant assets to move. These are completely unforced errors that in many cases looked bad the moment they were made. The fact that, at this point in the rebuild, we are spending valuable assets to cleanup our own mistakes rather than improving the team is inexcusable.

I hate that people are saying "it's a move to clear up cap space" as if it excuses how bad the trade is. Sure, that might be why the trade happened, but it doesn't excuse how bad the value of the trade was.

I think it has to be a significant off-ice issue that the whole league knows about.

Clearing a roster spot/cap space don't make sense because he had the best contract on our defense, and we're apparently trying to resign Ghost whom is a worse player and will have a worse contract.

And while that would be nice for our future considerations, you'd think 15th overall + Walman + a 2nd would get us significantly higher than 14 unless he has some crazy off ice issue.

On paper it is a bad trade. Most of us viewed Walman as a positive asset.
But until the dust settles and we see the end result it's premature to judge too harshly.
If this is some 4D chess move that nets us a Zegras type player, everyone will love the trade.
If it's a cap dump to sign Ghost, well, air your grievances

It's actually getting annoying. He hasn't done much as a GM of the Detroit Red Wings. His clout as a player keeps his approval rate so high. If he was Steve (any other last name) we wouldn't be this patient I believe.
Explain this trade. Basically gave away our 2nd d man on a great contract PLUS a second round pick for the sheep to just blindly rub off Yzerman some more....WTF IS GOING ON?!

Since when does Walman has negative value? Did I miss something here?
Significantly negative value too. It’s not like they packaged him with a 5th rounder. It’s hard to imagine someone who is a middle pairing guy on most teams being so toxic that teams wouldn’t take him for free if he was waived or with a late pick in a trade. Evander Kane is still in the league.

Yeah I agree. I am willing to give Yzerman a lot of leeway because he did such a good job in Tampa, and he inherited a truly terrible situation. However if you asked me what Yzerman's best moves as GM are they'd be: 1. Drafting Seider, 2. Drafting Raymond, 3. Trading for Walman, and 4. Signing Walman to this contract. Walman was one of his few truly bright spots to hang his hat on.

Most of his other moves have been at best: "yeah, I get why you're doing that. It's not what I'd like you to do, but I get it." This goes straight to "you cannot convince me this was a good idea unless the main reason it happened is a significant off ice issue that we don't know about yet- like he's a pedophile or something."

Maybe to get something in the draft later this week, move up with SJ if a player is available?

If not, I imagine he must have done something awful.

I thought it looked like the GIbson move was made in part to acquire the draft capital to move Walman. If we aren't moving Walman I am not sure we're moving Gibson.
I’d do that Gibson trade regardless. 2nd and a prospect for him when we is like maybe our 15th best prospect? I’d do that all day, but I was never too sold on Gibson.

You don’t trade up 3 days before the draft without the pick changing hands. You don’t go to stores to prepay for products you might want in the future and if not it’s cool they can keep the money.
