Not gonna lie, he's a french dude from the Q. Late pick.
meaning???

he was 1st overall QMJHL pick...was out of shape and lazy in his 1st two years, was a late pick because he had potential but was not applying it....woke himself up when he changed teams in the QMJHL, and dedicated himself to getting in shape, and working his butt off after that........that is why he was a late pick that is now good...

this guy his hard working, great IQ, excellent at both ends, has excellent offensive skills, has a good developing two way game.....I have not seen him live this year but it is not shocking he is dominating AHL because this guy is going to get better and better.

In his draft year, he was out of shape and overweight (could barely finish a shift without being winded) and was written off by all teams (including the Habs). Hence, a former #1 pick in the Q was a 5th round pick in the NHL draft. Roy admitted that he was not informed on nutrition and his attitude toward fitness that year was lacking.

Since then, he came into his D+1 season in shape and lit up the Q and earned a spot on the Team Canada WJHC roster (won gold) but still had deficiencies defensively and with his skating. If he could not make the NHL as a top-6 forward, he had no place. So he was asked to work on his two-way game and skating.

He followed D+1 with another offensive season in the Q but he sacrificed offense to learn defense. That translated into getting placed on a line with Bedard at WJHC as a two-way forward. He finished that tournament on the all star team. He also improved his skating significantly.

This year, his first as a pro, he is learning the pro game in Laval as the Habs have too many forwards and Roy is waiver exempt. I didn't think he would light up the AHL as he has to date. If he keeps it up, the Habs will have no choice but to call him up.

Joshua Roy is overlooked because of where he was drafted. But had he been in shape in his draft season, he would have been an early pick (late 1st / 2nd round) based on talent alone.

I wouldn’t say his skating improved significantly. If there’s a reason he doesn’t turn out as a top 6 forward in the NHL it’s going to be skating issues. Both agility and overall speed.

With that said, if he keeps improving on that, he’s going to be a very good player. His IQ on both ends of the ice is off the chart

If you watched his first two seasons in the Q, he was a very poor skater. He has improved significantly but its still his biggest weakness. He reminds me of a Tyler Toffoli type of player. However, given his improvement in the past 2 years, i expect he will improve his skating. He's a hard worker.

I think he ends up a top-6 winger in the the NHL regardless of skating woes.

I’ve watched his whole Q career and saw him plenty. He definitely improved from his 16yo season the last at every young player progresses, but it’s still lagging behind the rest of his game.

As I said if he keeps working on it, the guys a future 1st liner

I don't agree with that

IMO, he's on his way to become a Tyler Toffoli 2.0, the improved version

He's a better skater than Toffoli is now. Toffoli was painfully slow in his acceleration (or there lackof). Toffoli however was really smart positionally. Extremely high IQ.

I like the Toffoli 2.0 comparison.

He's awful defensively, lose the puck a ton in neutral zone.

Lots of stuff to work before being top-6 on a winning team.

You put him in the NHL he will give you garbage points while being Minus 25... (Montreal has enough of those 1 way player)

I agree!
Roy ain't the fastest or best skater, but like Toffoli, he more than make up for it with his other skills
His shot is fire, and he has skills for days
IMO he's not as good as a stick handler as Toff, but his ice vision is f***ing nuts
In Sherbrooke, he was able to reach players with his pass he had no business reaching

He's awful defensively, lose the puck a ton in neutral zone.

He can PK like it's nobodies business if he has to

Are you referring to Jo Drouin? You in the right thread? ;)

He is a very good passer. Needs to skate with the puck more. Will come in time.

I think his ceiling is certainly higher than that. His IQ is one of his greatest strengths rather than his tools. He could be elite if he keeps the work ethic he’s had the last couple years

He is a great story but the final chapter still needs to be written here and it's always such a gamble which way these things go.

He was the leading AAA scorer in his age group (and most minor years). He was the #1 Draft pick in the QMJHL draft. This kid has been on the radar even as a potential NHL #1 when he was younger.

He then hit a wall when his natural ability couldn't carry his poor work ethic against the tougher competition. This is when people thought he was lazy and his skating wasn't good enough. He wasn't putting in the work. It showed, he looked lost. He wasn't used to having kids as good as him and the constant need to improve.

I don't know how or why but a few years ago he started putting in the work on and off the ice. The growth in the past few years is undeniable.

This kid is and has always been extremely talented. That might even be underselling it. Now that his work ethic seems to be matching that talent he is exploding. His AHL pace will probably not continue at the current pace (slumps) but he is a very real talent and will pick up a lot of points playing like this with his vision tool.

Top 6. Yes. If he keeps up the hard work this kid has endless ability. If he becomes "content" and stops the hard work he will fall like he did when he first hit the QMJHL. All signs so far show that he learned his lesson and I don't expect a repeat.
