Traded Vladimir Tarasenko (1 year, 5 million)

Neither will a bottom 5 4th and a future 3rd.

At least if we kept him he could keep instilling some of his knowledge on our younger players.
And how does that look to future FAs? Clearly he had an understanding that if the team performed poorly this year we'd move him to a contender - you can't exactly say "Not liking the market, we'll just go back on our word if you don't mind"

Honestly I would have rather just ride Tarasenko to the off season than get back a 2024 4th and and 2025 3rd rounder.

That’s a weak first trade on Staios.
But he didn’t want that. Now he gets a chance to win and earn himself a good contract, he has no reason to stay here.

Sucks because the return was awful, but that's what happens when you're dealing with a 1 team list, in a buyers market, and said team legitimately has no picks or prospects, and can just hold out because they are the only team.

Just get the trade over with, make the player happy, move on to tomorrow, because there is no winning under those circumstances.

Better than him scoring pointless goals in March and April I guess. Also, let's just shut down who ever is hurting for the year.

Maybe we're trying to "tank" the season.

The return likely doesn’t help the team. I rather not help a divisional team win the cup this year if they trying to take advantage like that. You also play the game with Tarasenko saying if you don’t open up to more teams there will be no playoffs for you this year
Somehow, I feel playing hardball when you aren't a perennial contender like Vegas won't exactly work for Ottawa

For all the people who complained about Dorion tossing in 3rds and 4ths around like candy, this is what it looks like to actually get them back.

Not an ideal return but there wasn't a lot of room to move here.

He was obviously only waiving for 1 team. Thanks for the NMC Dorion.

But other teams aren't allowed to talk to Tarasenko.

Why didn't staios tell like 3-4-5 teams that Tarasenko is willing to waive for them (even if he wasn't) to drive up the price.

Example: call another GM of another playoff team and say "hey, I asked Tarasenko for a list of teams he will waive for to go on a cup run with, and you're one of the teams. What do you have to offer?"

Then go to Florida and say "team x is offering a second" or so on.

Isn't there posturing?

Or even hold off until the final hour and then if Florida doesn't offer a second, offer to trade Tarasenko to another team for this return. He'd probably rather go to new York or vegas or something than finish up in Ottawa. So even if Florida was his top choice, he might open up more choices as the deadline approaches so he doesn't have to be stuck in Ottawa.

Obviously this is all what ifs, but it's just a very underwhelming return.

And the first trade staios makes is underwhelming to say the least.

If thats all that was offered, why the hell not wait until the deadline?

You are smarter than this.

NTC or not, it's a laughable return.

Giroux demanded to only go to Florida with his NTC and the Flyers got a 1st + Tippett, so let's not pretend Staios had to take whatever they offered.

Enough excuses.

Didn't Tarasenko force his way to the Rangers for a first rounder last year too? Am I missing something?

I've always found it funny reading posts here and on Twitter leading up to the deadline... with people talking about Lundell, Luostarinen, Knight... LOL! Or even 1st round picks. Crazy talk.

Tarasenko had a NMC that he would pretty clearly only waive for FLA. And despite how much some Sens fans like him (because he looks decent compared to some of the other shit on this team), other GMs probably don't see him as a surefire top 6 winger in the playoffs. He's depth.

This is what you get when it's a market of one team.

I'm not going to judge Staios yet. He's inherited a large pile of manure. It'll take a couple of years to fix.

Absolute steal for Florida... I mean this is highway robbery.

I am disappointed.. so at least emotionally wrt the Ottawa Senators nothing changes.

The League would find a reason to confiscate another first round pick from us.
