Those are even more expensive to acquire. So, what you're saying we should have given up even more assets?
He gave up too many assets for the poor fits he acquired.

If he had picked up good fits for appropriate assets, everyone would be happy.

Staios if you're reading this....

Put in place a strict in-house deadline to get UFA extensions signed. It should be around mid february. If that internal deadline passes, start shopping them before the deadline. Communicate all that to the players and agents.

Don't be a moron and let UFA players slip past the trade deadline without a contract for the coming year.

Play hardball with the agents here, or they'll put you over a barrel.

(yes, i know vlad has an NTC so this doesnt really apply to him).

But if vlad is going to extend, do it now. Same with Chartier and Kubalik.

If Chych isn't giving positive resign vibes put him on the block too.

By the time the trade deadline is past, all three should either be extended or traded.

Make fair market value offers, but be a bastard about the timeline.

Either we trade him by the deadline, or he walks in the summer. Dude's not staying here unless we give him a monster contract.

We aren't extending kubalik unless he takes league minimum... And even then

Yeah I'd be very surprised if he resigns here or is offered an extension.

I tossed him in just to drive home the point about the GM firming up the plan for pending UFAs in advance of the trade deadline, as a general matter of practice going forward.

Tarasenko is a guy to keep with Pinto and Greig. I hope he can be extended to a reasonable amount.

If we must trade him, he is building Staios a case for a good return.

It's most likely Tarasenko wants to be traded somewhere he can make a nice retirement contract, not sure it's here.

I wonder if Staois could get that NYR 1st rd pick for Tarasenko, it looks like it could be in the late twenties & they need a scoring forward for the playoffs. Would two late firsts get us down around 13th to 15th?

It’s tough - he seems to fit in well and may like it here, and he has some veteran savvy and a goal scorer’s touch.

But he could still be expensive for what he brings, and with a high risk of regressing over his next contract.

I’d keep him for a cheap, short contract, but why would he sign one?

In which case, I think you have to trade him.

He’s the exact forward you want at the exact price you want. Dumb to not resign in my opinion.

Clearly he knows it too. Hence the new agent. He knows he’s valuable at that price point for at least another two years.

If we trade him we are on the free agent market looking for him. Just sign him.

He's open to staying because he's open to being paid.

Our new hero Ridly Greig was acquired because management made the tough choice of trading Pageau. I think exploring trade options for Tarasenko is equally as pragmatic.

I would trade Senko

I think that cap space can be used more wisely. If you want a bigger stronger team then use that cap space to get a heavy winger
I flip flop between wanting to re-sign him and this. We need a fast, heavy winger.

It would suck to trade him and not be able to sign a winger to replace him.

Ideally they can get a late first for Tarasenko and sign another forward, but who knows if free agents will be interested in Ottawa for a fair price given the season they've had.

If they can lock up Tarasenko for 2 or 3 years around the same price point they should probably just get it done.

I would love to keep him. He is a good fit, adds scoring depth, character and experience.
Assuming that he would sign a 2-3 year contract for about the same money, of course. I just think that this team needs someone who age wise fits into the gap between Giroux and Stützle/Sanderson/Tkachuk, lol. And not just someone who 'brings a lot of experience' (some washed out 4th liner), but someone who does still contribute and knows what pressure feels like.

A player like Tarasenko willing to sign here is not a default. He could certainly be a contributing piece on any cup contending team. If you get a great offer, I'm certainly not against trading him. But there is absolutely no need to force it.

My guess is he is traded at the deadline & signs a contract July 1 with Florida where it seems he would like to end up.

I'd pay him to leave.

In regards to Tarasenko they have no choice but to trade him. PD's complete misnagament of this teams assets has put them into a position where they have no choice. They need prospects and picks badly. Every team needs them in a cap world. Even if you are a contender you need assets.

It'd be so ballin if we trade him at half retained for a 1st, he wins a cup with whomever, but because he likes Ottawa so much, comes back and signs at $4 million aav for 4 years.

I will give him $4.5M for 3 years (if he takes a discount). It's not just his point totals, it's how well he gels with whomever he is placed with. He is a key part of the 3rd line being an offensive driver with The Riddler and Mr. Bean. They mesh so well with each bringing different elements. In 3 years Tarasenko will still be younger than Giroux would be today IIRC.

Ideally, he likes it here and signs in the off-season if we are to get assets for him at TDL.
