Traded Vladimir Tarasenko (1 year, 5 million)

He has the feel of a guy who could just fall off a cliff at some point.

But it's tough to turn your nose up at a Stanley Cup winning veteran who works really hard and has a lot of veteran savvy to offer.

I hear that and his value is tough to gauge but he is going to get paid (maybe I'm high at 4). He is exactly the player that GM's gush over and if he carries his play into the playoffs this year his stock is going to sky rocket.

What makes me bullish is that he can skate and he has hands, both NHL level so he has skills to fall back on. He has been an absolute line driver in Vancouver this year and was the reason the bottom 6 was so productive for them early on. He is without question benefiting from the team playing so well but he's also a huge reason why they are where they are, so chicken or the egg situation...

Risk reward situation perhaps but I think he is a guy to keep an eye on this year and every team that gets bounced from the playoffs and criticized for being soft, of which there are always many, is going to be calling his agent.
Ya you said it pretty much. If they like him and want him, they'll have to pay up.

I personally probably wouldn't, but I see the appeal and potential he could be a late bloomer. I watch a fair bit of Vancouver and do like him. Guess it depends what other options may be available to management too.

Love me some Vlad. He's been a great vet to surround the young guys who stays cool under pressure and knows how to win and play the right way. Says all the right things and leads on and off the ice.

He's quietly on pace for a 25 goal 60 points ish season with good two way play and leadership. I hate the plus minus stat but sometimes it can be telling and he's +16 which is pretty impressive on this team.

If he's willing to re-sign I'd love to have him on a 2-3 year deal. Another added bonus is that he's Russian which is cool for team chemistry with Zub.

maybe having Zub + Tarasenko it will help us poach some more russian fa talent as well.

Will the Leafs need us to take Calle Järnkrok off their hands? I would gladly do that

And if not, there will be a lot of options on the UFA market.

Sam Reinhart would be the biggest coup as he's Elite both ways but will cost a pretty penny, this would mean that one of Chabot or Chychrun is gone for sure.

We could also score big time with Stephenson or Marchessault (can't see Stamkos leaving TB, not talking about Guentzel as he is pure offense) but not sure we'll luck into that

Assuming our Top-9 next season is :

Tkachuk - Norris - Giroux
Greig - Stutzle - Batherson
?????? - Pinto - Joseph

Some names I'll keep an eye on to improve the bottom-6 :

Teuvo Teräväinen, Jake DeBrusk, Danton Heinen, Stefan Noesen, Warren Foegele, Brandon Duhaime, Teddy Blueger, Jordan Martinook, Sam Lafferty...

Teravainen/DeBrusk and Heinen/Noesen would be great. Replace Tarasenko and Kubalik by 2 of these and we're improving
I would check in on bertuzzi this season may screw up his negotiations in the upcoming season. I still like him.

De brisk may just be too expensive for us.

I think they need to trade all 3 UFAs & get whatever they can as well as a couple of other guys. If Tarasenko wants to re-sign here than let him do it during the summer after the season is over & we have traded him for some assets. They are a bottom dwelling team afterall, they may start climbing out of this hole, but they are probably not making the playoffs which means they should be looking for a decent draft position & acquiring picks/prospect/players who can help next yr. They have some assets & should be looking to fill their needs which are somewhat obvious (RD/RW/G).

Why would DeBrusk be more expensive than Bertuzzi? They are paid mostly for points but I much prefer Jake's game. JDB had a great season last year but outside of that, doesn't have an historic of good numbers, should be have for 5.5 AAV maybe

Would love to keep him but he's not going to be cheap. If he can't take less than market value in an extension, I hope we recoup as much as we can for him.

Trade him at the deadline, get max assets. Then hope he's available to come back in free agency at a good value. Otherwise, move on.

I think he will push 6. They may honestly both be pricier than we can afford

I think players like Tarasenko are part of the solution, and he is having a decent year on an off season for many of our important players. We need to retain and surround the team with more players of his pedigree. Why move him, only to try and find other players like him? A player with small , hockey loving kids in a safe community will want term and stability. I think Vlad is a cerebral player and smart to see that the team is full of the same potential he thought they had in the off season.

Of course, if he wants too much, then the decision will be easy for Staios.

If he's willing to take a similar deal to Giroux adjusted for the reality that he's a bit younger but not as good, 4 yrs x 5 mil? We take some risk with the term, but 5 mil seems reasonable for him provided he doesn't start crashing down.

Maybe that's too much term, but I don't think he'd take 3 years.

The answer to this question - asset management.

Same reason why we moved Pageau instead of re-signing him.

We could have been the team to throw 30M over 6 years at him through his late 20s/early 30s, but instead we traded him for a 1st+2nd and now we have Greig and Kleven to show for it, along with 5M in cap space we used to sign Tarasenko.

People forget how many assets were burned under Dorion. We traded 2 high 1sts and 3 2nds for ADB and Chychrun trying to rush this team to the playoffs. That's in addition to losing Formenton, who was supposed to be a young fixture in our top 9 for the foreseeable future, and wasting a top 10 pick on Boucher. The pipeline is looking terrible and we desperately need to replenish it. Can't be leaving assets on the table, especially if teams are willing to pay something nice for Tarasenko as a rental.

Trade Tarasenko for hopefully a late 1st and let him go for a cup. If he's a free agent in the summer and is willing to come back on a reasonable deal, that's when signing him becomes a more reasonable proposition.

But realistically this is a guy who already reportedly turned down 5.5M x 4YRs from the Sens this summer in favour of a 1YR mercenary contract. He's probably going back down south, as would I if I were in his shoes.
