He’s easily the best Dman on the Senators and by game 10 of this season Wil be considered their best player (which he is already just the fans need to catch up after the articles are printed)

This is the exact same conversations I had about year 1-2 Erik Karlsson - when he got demoted to the AHL I thought it was stupid and the response from most fans was he needed it and he was only 19 because most fans honestly don’t really know what to think they just think what TSN tells them to think.
Stutzle just had the best d + 3 in over a decade not counting McDavid. As good as Sanderson projects to be he won't even be the best player on this team let alone 2nd best skater ever.

It's funny...for the first few games of the WJC this past winter, we were getting those vibes with Bedard. A player just so different and really has the puck on a stick that you wonder how it's possible.

But the league is so different now. There is too much talent overall for even a phenom to make a Gretzky level impact in the NHL now. In a way, it's kinda sad. There will never be another such dominant performance like that again.
McDavid is the closest thing since Gretzky.

The distance he put between himself and his peers is crazy.

Nope, but no disrespect to Mario.

I think McDavid is far more similar in style to Gretzky.
I agree that McDavid is the greatest player we have seen in quite a while; however, he is not similar in style to Gretzky. McDavid is a much better and faster skater with the puck than Gretzky was. Gretzky was slippery as a fox, one of the best scorers, puck handlers and distributors I have ever seen; he was a "thinker" with high hockey IQ who knew how to position himself on the ice , anticipating, reading and reacting to other players on both teams. Mario was great too due to his high hockey IQ and his size, but not as great as Gretzky. Marcel Dionne was a pretty good player too, along with Hawerchuk.

And we missed so many of Gretzky's early games in his career when hockey was only on TV on Wednesday and Saturday. And then those American games after the Superbowl on Sundays which were so neat cause neither team was Montreal or Toronto. Most of my memories of Gretzky's early years was reading the sports page the next day, or often two days later , and seeing the stats where Gretz got 5 points again! But of course there were still cigarette smokers in the league back then too. I always thought Mario was the more dangerous one, adding size. But the argument will never be settled i reckon.

Mario is the most talented player to have played. McDavid probably second. But that's his comparable in terms of talent level versus his peers.

Gretzky was great because of his hockey IQ but pure talent wise he wasn't A+ across the board like McDavid or Lemieux. A number of Gretzky's records are also only intact because Lemieux got cancer/big injuries.

Disagree.

Gretzky was quicker than most give him credit for. Mainly because he always self deprecated when it came to his skills. He wasn't fastest in the league like McDavid but he put defenders on their heels.

McDavid is one of smartest players on the ice too and has the puck all time.

Anyway, I am comfortable with my assessment and no worries with anyone disagreeing.

Gretzky had a very unique style. He played the game like in football Messi plays. Out of ten in my opinion.

Stutzle really need to work on slap shot as one timer. Changing speeds. To improve around the net areas. Off the boards plays, to be strong on the puck. And overall PP.

How comparable Stutzle with 87 points to Jack Hughes.

McDavid is somewhat close...I put him and Crosby on the same tier. But the big thing is how far ahead Gretzky was from everyone else. He was easily in his own league.

There might be too much talent for a player to dominate like Gretzky in the NHL, but to be fair to Gretzky, his domination started well before the NHL. He probably has the best u17 season and u18 season on record, and both of those season happened before the NHL. We can adjust for differences in era, but I think a decent argument can be made that no player that has entered the NHL since Gretzky has been as good as Gretzky.

With time I think there will be one someday as the training and learning improves, as it always does. Original 6 teams had some great players but the training, development, strategy, tactics and understanding of the game has significantly changed since then. I may be old but I am not an old fool who thinks the old days were better. :)

How about his U11 season where he scored 378 goals LOL!

Since this thread has become all about Gretzky, let me add my two cents:

I was very young when Gretzky was dominating and I really didn't watch him until much later in his career. But watching old highlights (early 80s) this is what I saw:

-faster than people give him credit; maybe not the fastest of his era, but above average speed.
-He'd rush the puck into the zone and was such a good puck handler, he could do whatever he wanted with it. He could either put the puck under the defender's stick and through his skates, or just deke and go around him, He'd finish the play with a cross crease pass or a flip of the puck into a top corner.

In a lof ways, McDavid is very similar. McDavid is bigger, stronger and faster but that's a product of the times. No one today plays at the weight Gretzky played at.

Both have supreme vision and poise with the puck under pressure. On top of puckhandling, their biggest weapon is deception. They can sell a move and take the defender out of position to buy themselves time and space.
