Gotta throw a shout out to Trattoria da Vinci for any pasta fans out there. Downtown but a ways from the X, it's probably my favorite place to eat. They have a pasta bar for lunch where you pick what you want and they make it in front of you. Fantastic. Also saw 7 Wild players eating there for lunch on game day, so you know it's good. (I've heard a bunch of them eat there often, too, as I think they had their orders saved from previous visits)

Now that I've got admitted to Minnesota, I have to wonder whether the Twin Cities are livable on a $24,440 budget... for the financial information is now known in my case.

Well, anything is doable, it just depends on how well you want to live.

My apartment in Dinkytown (neighborhood just north of campus) when I was going to the U was $685/month + electricity. One bedroom, two person apartment. So the cost per person per month was $342.50. Not bad at all. Lived there 2010-2013, so if the rent has gone up, I'm sure it hasn't gone up too much.

Of course, it wasn't the nicest apartment. But we were in college and didn't care. It wasn't falling apart or anything, you could just tell it was an old building

There have been a bunch of luxury apartments popping up there over the last 5 years, I would imagine those are running double what we paid for ours.

Hello!

Taking my daughter to the Wild/Hawks game on Tueday and she's asking if we can try to get autographs from the Hawks. (She's 7 and thinks I can just snap my fingers and make things happen. :)

Anyway, I've heard that hanging by the hotel around morning skate time might be our best shot, but do visiting teams still stay at The St. Paul? Any tips/advice appreciated!

you would be surprised, a lot of people down here know about a lot of hockey. If you hang out in the right areas, ya might just get someone to come up and talk to you about it.

Funny because my dad and I were just talking about whether we should wear Aces hats or not. Would anyone even know who they are?

Some do....otherwise I spread the word. A lot of the great hockey minds knew the Solar Bears (of which I have like 10? sweaters) were our affiliate last year, and that Alaska is this year. During the playoffs I actually talked to Dave Christian about them for maybe 10 minutes or so when he was signing autographs because he had just been down there.

However, some random dude thought I was wearing a Patrick Roy jersey when he walked down the aisle once (not during an Avs game), and instead it was Olivier Roy from the Kelly Cup Finals last year.

I've met Alaskans at games and they always say something, and I met a cousin of one of their old goaltenders waiting with my buddy at the elevators one game too.

I say wear them, spread the word. I do wish the hockey lodge would carry some of their stuff though, I assume when every ECHL team is properly assigned like the AHL with the refshuffle next year maybe that will happen?

For now I just order online on the Aces store, and pick off jerseys on Meigray. (Random authentic, Guyer, Coleman, Roy).

Moving to the cities

I'm trying to move down to the Twin Cities, and I'm wondering if anyone has some advice.

I've been living in Fargo since I moved here in high school (about 12 years ago). I may have a job offer at a place in Brooklyn Park (nothing set in stone. I might not get it). My brother wants to get an apartment together near the Xcel Energy Center since he works downtown St. Paul.

Would a commute from St. Paul (Shepard Road) to Brooklyn Park be awful? I know the area a little bit, but I know nothing of rush hour traffic. How long would that commute be? Should I look at different options?

I'm used to relatively stress-free driving in Fargo. It's 20 minutes tops to any place in town. I also spent a couple years working in Tokyo, and nothing will be worse than that.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hmmm, yeah that wouldn't be a great commute. I'd imagine you'd go 35E to 694, to avoid 94.

I bet that's all of 45 minutes in rush hour. Probably closer to an hour.

But, I'm in the south metro, so someone more familiar with the north metro could probably give you a more definitive answer.

If you are working first shift (so say 8a-430p), you will be going in the opposite direction to most. Most will be coming from the burbs into St Paul, whereas you will be heading out to the burbs from St Paul. Same goes (kinda) coming home at night, as most of the burb folks will be leaving St Paul, where as you will be coming into the city. Biggest traffic issue would be on game night in my opinion.
35E (north of St. Paul) is being completely rebuilt, so there is currently construction, but nothing so significant that it is not manageable. The north loop of 494/694 has been for the most part redone. The highway 10 interchange on the loop is also completed (use to be a bottleneck there).

According to mapquest at 4:25 PM today, it is 35 mins from Brooklyn Park to St. Paul with traffic, typical non-traffic commute time is 27 minutes. On the flipside, St Paul to Brooklyn Park is currently at 42 minutes. There you can see where traffic going out of town is slower in the PM vs coming into town.

Do the same thing in the AM to see travel times to get an idea.

If you are visiting St Paul, do yourself a favor and take the 15 minute drive east on 94 to Woodbury if you are a wing fan. Be sure to hit either their early or late happy hour. A full three pounds of connected wings are $9. These are not the little rinky dinky ones that BW serves, these things are massive, saucy and delicious!!!

Sheppard Road would be a little awkward. I personally wouldn't like that comute every day but it wouldn't be the end of the world if I had to deal with it. Take 35E north to 694 I reckon and go from there. All depends on time of day and which direction.

Excellent info, everyone. Thanks.

The apartment we have in mind is located right off Shepard, south of the Xcel. There are a lot of variables, so everything could change. Doesn't seem as bad as I thought it might be. Still, I'm sure there are some better options out there.

I could probably do an hour commute for about a year just to see how it goes.

I'm gonna look at some places that may be a good compromise. Can anyone tell me what would be a good place to live that is between St. Paul and Brooklyn Park?

Check out the Shoreview/New Brighton/Arden Hills area. Centrally located with access to direct access to both I-35W and I-694. 15 minutes from St Paul and 15 minutes from Brooklyn Park.

This is exactly what I thought of when I first saw his question. Shoreview - nice area, clean, close to North Oaks, WBL and Dellwood.

Another option could be Little Canada - it's fairly nice area but definitely closer to downtown than it will be to Brooklyn Park.

The suggestions above are good ones, I would add in Roseville, about 15 miles to BP and 10 to STP.
