It is just hard to know with Nintendo. Typically they have been keeping backwards compatibility. All the handhelds except the Switch have had it. Wii had GameCube and Wii U had Wii. I'd hope their history suggests they will keep down this path. I also just know that TotK and BotW upgrades would sell 15m units in no time. Perhaps the middle ground is backwards compatibility, but paid upgrades?

Alright, I think I'm pulling the trigger on a Switch...y'all said to get the OLED, right? Am I buying game discs or can you purchase right onto the switch like consoles these days?

Edit: Ha, completely missed all the talk of the Direct. I've never been great with timing... but I suspect it'll take awhile for the Direct to get up and running.

Yes, the OLED is the best version of the switch, and the one I would recommend. You can purchase the games digitally straight to the switch, however, the switch doesn't have a big internal drive, but does have expandable storage. So, you'll most likely need to buy a big micro SD card if you want a digital only library. It can do microSD cards as big as 2TBs. It has to be a "UHS-I" with transfer speeds 60 - 95 MB/sec. The faster the transfer speed, the better gameplay experience.

Get at least one physical game (preferably one that will see a lot of use) and always keep it in the console.

This is correct. I’d add one caveat, the maximum read speed of the Switch from an SD card is 104 MB/s. Buying a card any faster than that won’t be utilized on the Switch.

I prefer the physical carts… in general I prefer physical game media. But with the switch they are so easy to carry and swap that they are quite useful given the limitation built in the system. The downside, given how the Switch is used, buying used physical games tends to be cart only with is a pain.

I’d personally look at Nintendo refurb OLED. Nintendo does a great job with their refurbs and saves a few bucks.

Apologies if this is obvious, but why? What kind of hack is this?
If you bought say The Witcher 3 digitally and had the base Switch. That's literally the only game you could store on the system without an SD card (TW3 i s~28 GB and base Switch has ~29 GB of storage). If you have the cart instead, you basically got a 'free' 28 GB of storage by just utilizing the cart.

Yep. Even if you really, really despise the idea of dealing with the carts, get the one big physical game and never take it out of the Switch. It's in its own little storage slot.

Ahh gotcha. I plan to get both Zelda games... and now that you mention it, Witcher 3 would be fun on there (have on xbox but NEVER play it). Do you guys have a recommendation? I guess I could just look up which is the biggest game and buy the cart for that.

edit: Shit. Was gonna buy this refurbished ToK Switch OLED yesterday when I started this convo but it's already out of stock. Anyone got any other leads for good systems other than Amazon?

One of the best things on TW3 is now there is a decent cross save system that works between all platforms. So if you have all the same content (DLCs and such) you can play the Xbox version at home and then move right over to the Switch portably. I've dabbled in that since the latest update and it is fantastic. Though the game looks like garbage on the Switch on a big TV.

Both Zelda games are great. TotK is simply BotW on steroids. Both of them are mid teens on size if thats the path you're looking at. I wouldn't worry too much on storage though. A sandisk ultra 512GB is something like $40. You could technically fill that up, but odds are you won't anytime soon with Swtich game sizes. If you even have a random 128GB card laying around, that'll suffice for a while. I have a 200GB in mine that I've had since it came out, and I'm not close to full. Now I buy mostly physical, but even if I didn't I might be missing two games in total.

That's where I'd buy refurb. It may not be the cheapest, but Nintendo does a really good job with their internal refurb. Checking cheapassgamer for any new deals would also be worth a look.

That said, if you would be looking to sell it in 2-3-4 years. A special edition is not at all a bad option. Nintendo fans go nuts over them down the road. IE I bought a Majora's Mask edition 3DS when I finally got into that system. Played it for years (kept the box and shit), sold it for over 400 this past summer (I think I paid 200 or 220). Mario and Zelda special editions will be similar with the Switch.

I don't like any of the super popular games, so no recommendations.

My most played game on Switch might be Burnout Paradise.

Any recommendations depends on what types of games you like. The Switch has a vast and diverse library of great games at this point and plenty of games in each that are good. Even the Doom ports hold up fairly well considering the power the Switch has.

Do you guys have a recommendation
The Switch has one of the best discographies of games easily.

- Shin Megami Tensei V
- Mario Kart (frustrating at higher CC but still fun)
- Mario Pack (they don't make the game anymore because Nintendo is trying to turn it into a legendary game 20-30 years down the line, but they redid Mario 64, Mario Galaxy, and Mario Sunshine in a pack)
- Mario Odyssey (if you like Mario 64 and those other games)
- Hollow Knight
- Luigi's Mansion
- Pikman (any game, all of them are amazing)
- Mario Party Superstars (don't get the other Mario Party game which is super bad)
- Hades
- Both Zelda games
- Advance Wars 1+2
- Ori and the Will of the Wisp
- Kirby games (all of them are great)
- Persona 5 Royal

Super Mario Maker 2 and/or Animal Crossing. Only if you have a lot of free time.

If you like platformers, all the Super Mario games, if you dislike platformers, none of them.

There's also Pokemon, but I don't know how much you care about those games (Arceus is the best).

I have Eternal, actually. I didn't play it much because I suck, but it ran fine and it was a good game.

I didn't grab Eternal, but have 2016 and it is a low resolution 30fps version, but yeah if you have reasonable expectations, it actually works. Same with Wolfenstein.

Overwhelmingly positive reception for the CP2077 update and DLC. I'll have to give that a whirl when I finish up Starfield.

Thanks, man! That's cool about the cross platform save - didn't know that. I really didn't play all TW3 all that much on xbox so I'll probably just restart on switch. I will only be playing that one remotely, not on a TV most likely. Hope it looks OK in that format.

I was thinking the same thing. I even transferred my Xbox save to steam already. Since I expect the mod scene to be pretty great as well.
Thanks for the advice mate, I played it very sparingly upwards to around seven hours until CD Projekt came out mentioning that you should do a new save with this new patch.

Yeah I just saw that. I guess I'll be starting a new savefile. Luckily it's been a few years, so I don't think I'll get bored with it. It really is too bad they never added new game+ option. Then my efforts wouldn't feel wasted. 🫤

When I do go through CP2077, I'll be on my third play through. It'll be interesting to see how I feel at the end of it. The 2nd go round was way better than the first. If that same leap is there, it might actually live up to the initial hype.

Finally got my computer upgraded and repaired. Haven't played Cyber-Punk yet so I downloaded it last night and will start either tonight or over the weekend. Figured I'd play through the game and the expansion and then circle back and hit up Starfield.

I haven't heard too much about bugs in that game so I'm sure it's probably already good to go, but I figured I'd give it a bit more time while I'll play Cyberpunk.

Starfield certainly has bugs. I haven't encountered any game breaking, but some oddities and some I've had to quit and re-start the game. By Bethesda standards though, it is probably their most polished game of all time.
