What does dump all the ports mean here?

Fill the remaining release lineup with updated versions of games on older systems (or just straight ports with no changes other than it runs on Switch) in order to save any new games for the upcoming launch of the new console.

The new 2D Super Mario Bros (Wonder) might very well be the last new major first-party game to release exclusively on the Switch.

I figure there is possibility of cross-gen games though that will run on Switch, but run better on the new hardware.

I bet that the Switch will have the life cycle of the Gameboy Advance and DS where all the games were backwards compatible with each other until the new 3DS came out and you had to buy new games for it.

Today's Nintendo Direct all but confirmed Fall 24 for the new Switch. Dump all the ports and nothing big coming at all in 2024.
I would consider the Super Mario World franchise a big name for Nintendo. That game doesn't sell as well as a Zelda game but has a very good following. Plus we just got a Pikman game recently which is GOAT franchise.

Thankfully it's been a very solid year for games, at least by modern standards.

Alan Wake 2 is the biggest release left for me. Game looks awesome and the shared Control universe kicks ass.

Probably the best year for AAA games since 2017.

However, on the indie side of things, I feel this is the least excited I've been on what's come out for several years.

Pretty much this. All the random games Nintendo has left to port over for the last cash grab on the switch. The Thousand Year Door port is just such an obvious fanservice move that doesn't take a huge amount of resources to release. That's pretty much all that is left once you get past Wonder and the Peach game.

Nintendo is just limping along the Switch until next fall. Feel like the end of the Wii U (which I stand by being super underrated).

Just give it game of the year at this point

The more I actually see of this, the less I actually care. I'm not the biggest Final Fantasy fan to begin with, but this is looking more like modern FF rather than classic... that and isn't a good thing.

Yeah this was finally a good year overall. I'd go further back than 2017, but either way the first good year of this generation (though most games are still cross gen sadly).

AW2 looks great. I really enjoy Remedy games, so I'm sure I'll like that one too.

My hope overall is that this generation can finally get going now and carry this momentum in 2024. Up to this point, this has been the worst generation of games. If the tide turns without it dying off due to the lack of console power (really starting to see the limitations now and Switch 2 will set a new baseline), we might finally get a good 2-3 years of games in a row.

It's just the 2nd 1/3 of FF7. If you didn't like FF7R you won't like this one either.

That was just okay to me... not great not bad. This just seems like an even further extension into the modern version of Final Fantasy... that I really don't think is that good. Feels like nostalgia is being used to hide the flaws of what Final Fantasy has turned into.

It does look really good, but I'm still not a fan of the changes they're making to the story. If they would've made an optional alternate route where Aerith lives, I would've been fine with that. But all the other changes, I'm not a big fan of.

I must admit that I'm pretty excited about the Paper Mario thousand year door remake/remaster. God damn Nintendo keeps nickel and diming me through nostalgia.

Yeah I’ll be buying it and Super Mario RPG. They know us idiots are basically a money tree. I just hope Switch 2 is natively backwards with the physical carts. I don’t want to travel carrying two Switches. It’s already hell in airports with two laptops and a switch.

The GBA and DS were backwards compatible when they first came out, so there is hope.

I also think they'll be better off keeping their large install base, rather than ditching them for ports money.

I agree, but also the last time Nintendo had a popular console with a massive install base (Wii) they went for backwards compatibility and it didn't help the new console (Wii U).

In my opinion, the smart move is to just make an incremental upgraded Switch 2 with initial backwards compatibility just like all the other console manufacturers have been doing for multiple generations, but it's Nintendo so you never know what they might be willing to give up in hopes of offering a "new experience."
