The hot shots series was the absolute best.

I have started playing 2k21 lately and its not bad. The new EA PGA Tour is PS5 only which sucks.
3 years into the generation, we better start getting games legitimately made for the XSX and PS5.

Game remakes. That's so weird that's a thing now but I suppose it makes sense.

When they come out with updated versions of Altered Beast, Space Harrier, and Star Control, I'm totally in on those.

Personally I hate it. I know that they are different to an extent but the idea of paying for a game that was released 10+ years ago for full price (more nowadays) seems weird to me.

Remakes sell, they wouldn't keep re-doing movies again and again if they weren't viable. I suppose I can see the allure of an older game done with updated technology, that at least makes more sense than watching a watered-down version of a classic film with different actors and (sometimes) altered plot.

I'm kind of in the middle. I don't like this trend of remaking/remastering a AAA game from a while back like Mafia/Hitman/RE/Last of Us.

But a remaster of an even older game like Burnout Paradise/Spyro/Crash Team Racing/Republic Commando? Sign me uuuuuuuuuuupp!

Super Mario All Stars for SNES had to be one of the first console-based remakes. But you got 4 games with upgraded graphics for the price of one.

Not that I'm a big fan of remakes, but I see why companies do it. Someone else has already done all the work to create the IP, balance the game, write the story, etc., etc. The majority of gamers these days probably won't tolerate the less pretty graphics of the original releases, that is, if they even have the hardware to play them in the case of games on some consoles. And unless you butcher the remake, you figure you're going to get a certain baseline of guaranteed sales from fans of the original version.

So I'm coming at this from the perspective that I've experienced it before. Like I played the original Resident Evil 4 back when it released in the 2000's. To me releasing it again now is cheap haha. Now if I had never played it before then f*** yeah, I'd be pumped. My motives are purely selfish and I'm not even a little sorry. As far as the movie remakes are concerned, it would piss me off equally but I haven't actually watched an original of a remade movie.

Well, I don't know, to me it's a bit of both, games I've played before and games I haven't. So, I actually have all of the remasters I listed in that second list.

- Burnout Paradise I tried briefly when it was new on PS3, but didn't get into it. Then, I actually bought it when my PS3 was way overdue, well into the PS4 era, and played through it on PS3. THEN, I got a Switch and they released it as a remaster. I got the remaster and completed it again because I liked playing it the first time, but it wasn't about nostalgia.

- Spyro I played wherever it was available as a little kid, so I had a good idea of what the game was like, but I never owned it myself before the remaster.

- Republic Commando I had never played before, prior to the remaster.

- Crash Team Racing is my all-time favorite game on any console. I played the original on PS1 as a five-year-old, I played the PS1 disc on PS2, I got the PS3 digital copy and played it all through my teen years, then I got the remaster on Switch. Now I'm like, do I also need it for PS5, or is it enough to have it on Switch.

So it's a mix of nostalgia and sometimes even playing a new game.

I feel kinda mixed on remakes, but with how disappointed I've been in newer games lately, I'm fine with a big dose of nostalgia. The RE2 remake didn't phone it in and was amazing. The RE3 remake was less amazing, but still solid. Hearing all the good reviews for the RE4 remake has me extremely excited.

Remasters are becoming the Thor 4s and Toy Story Vs' of the world. I love good classic games with amazing graphic remakes as much as the next person, but spending your time away to make these is a big negative compared to a original title. There are some that absolutely needed the remake, the Halo games, some of the best Playstations, some of the best Nintendo like Metroid, and KOTOR if that ever happens.

Put in some time on Diablo 4 beta. It’s really good. It’s the game Diablo 3 should have been. Pretty much has every quality of life feature you could ask for. There’s so much content in the just the one zone that’s available it’s going to keep people engaged for a long time

Is the PS5 upgrade worth it over the PS4? I haven’t looked much ever since it was impossible to actually get a ps5. That seems to be different now.

Depends on the kind of games you like playing, but to me it was worth it. Much quicker load times is the feature I enjoy the most, but if you're into increased graphical fidelity, that can be a draw too as PS5 can handle things like ray tracing and output 4K at 60 fps for well-optimized games. I went from PS4 Pro to PS5 and even that is very noticeable. If you have a base model PS4, then it's a significant leap up.

Returnal is my favorite PS5 exclusive, and the Demon's Souls remake is very nice too if you're into From Soft games.

I went from Xbox one to the Series X and it's a pretty noticeable upgrade. Unfortunately the exclusives have been slow to start out but it'll be something worth investing in if you game a decent amount.

On the subject of remakes, remasters, rereleases:

Given the attitude the games industry has to the availability of past titles, I don't really have a problem with games being rereleased on new platforms. Nobody thinks films made in black and white are less impressive or less worthy than films made today, but there seems to be an assumption that old(er) video games just don't have a market. I'd like to see the statistics for Sony's new PS+ tiers with classic PS1/2/P titles being made available and see what the actual pickup rate of those is. As someone who spends a lot of time online reading about video games I see people outraged that more isn't don't to preserve older games, but I don't think that applies to the wider market.

The industry being reliant on increasingly large amounts of money - for development and marketing, then at the point of purchase for the player - makes rereleasing things that don't have all of that an easy sell for publishers. Even then, if you're not going to sell that many, how worth it does it end up being? Even then, emulating PS2 stuff on PS4 is easy enough and isn't going to take up a lot of resources, but if you go to the trouble of completely remaking something from the ground up, will you get the money back? This is before even considering how the two versions of the game compare.

I'm going to be playing the PS4 version of Shadow of the Colossus soon. I've only played the PS3 version, which is effectively an upscaled version of the original. We talked about it a bit on the Geek Emporium a few weeks ago and I'm not sure what I'm going to expect. I'm glad it exists and there's no denying that things like the controls will be refined, but do the changes in graphics produce a comparable experience? Should they? Is it fair to consider the remake in relation to the original, or should it be considered purely on its own merits? If it's a genuinely great game like this, are you unable to separate your experience of the original with the remake?

I'm glad the concept exists because from the PS3 era onwards there are a lot of games I've been able to play which I didn't have the chance to when they were first released. I've also been able to get and keep these games. In a world that's increasingly shifting to digital, to streaming and to removing the concept of ownership from consumers, I think any means of preserving older games is a good thing.

Easy yes.

Say goodbye to excessive loading and never touch 30 fps ever again.

The upgraded graphics are nice, but the increased performance and minimal load times makes the gaming experience significantly better.

You committed the biggest sin in gaming, pre-ordered a game.

I barely and I mean barely play my Xbox anymore since the better games currently and past are on the PlayStation (I got a big back catalogue). However, I suspect that will change with Micro$oft buying all the good independent studios like Facebook did with social media. Slowly and surely like the boiling frog metaphor, I can only see Microsoft making these games exclusives in the long-run.

I think we're going to see more rereleased due to how fast consoles are coming out these days, to me only Nintendo seems to be held in the idea of keeping the Switch platform for a long-time even if more upgraded models are most definitely in the works.

The console generations are actually increasing in length (used to be more around ~6 years and are ~8 now) and cross generation support is at an all time high.

Oh 30 FPS is still around and will be around. We've seen more and more coming down the pipeline as last generation support dies off.
