I'm not so sure. If they just keep getting the cream of the crop UFAs every year for 75% of market value they might be ok. They also kept their only B+ level prospect.Might be even more ideal for the Flames. 2026 is unprotected and eventually Vegas is going to fall out of the playoffs.
for everyone calling this a shitty deal and saying Conroy should be fired...
Looking back at deals involving pending UFA defensemen and 1st round picks near the deadline...
So that's going back to 2017...
- Sean Walker got a 1st, but Philly ate RyJo's contract (4m for an additional year)
- Dmitri Orlov (and Hathaway) returned a 1st, 2nd, 3rd and a nothing prospect
- Hampus Lindholm returned a 1st and 2 2nds, but Anaheim ate a multi-year cap dump
- Ben Chiarot returned a 1st, 4th and nothing prospect
- David Savard returned a 1st and 3rd
- Kevin Shattenkirk returned a 1st, Conditional 2nd (they got nothing), Zach Sanford (who was a B prospect at the time) and Brad Malone (was in the AHL and a pending UFA)
Maybe the problem is more unrealistic expectations than the actual return.
1. I wasn't comparing players, I was showing that teams rarely pay much more for pending UFA defensemen. I literally went back 8 deadlines (including this year). Calling a guy dumb because he didn't get the best return for a UFA defenseman in close to a decade is definitely not something one would consider a smart take.Hanifin is much better than every one of those D not named Lindholm. Very poor comparables and only further highlights how dumb Conroy is.
Hanifin is 27 not in his 30s. Hanifin is a lot better than most of those guys. The only ones somewhat comparable are Hampus Lindholm and Dmitri Orlov.
No kidding. Look at the Jeannot return. Pretty much double what we got for triple the player.Deadline trade value doesn’t move in parallel with increasing player quality.
You can't make such a claim while ignoring the quality of the player as quality is what determines value. To ignore that is asinine.1. 2. Shattenkirk was absolutely a good comparable, and the hype around him was ridiculous too. There was even talks of 2 first rounders for him.
That’s where “retirees” goLTIR is technically not on the roster.

Honestly retention for 2 months has almost no value. there is a reason why teams are only getting a 4th to 6th to retain 25%, and in a couple of those cases (both 4th rounders), the retaining team also sent a low prospect to the team needing retentionI’m ok with the assets if no retention and conditions on first. But with the retention and the weird clause on the first, I'd feel better if the player was upgraded.
New rules stipulate a player/pick has to change hands for 3rd team retention.Honestly retention for 2 months has almost no value. there is a reason why teams are only getting a 4th to 6th to retain 25%, and in a couple of those cases (both 4th rounders), the retaining team also sent a low prospect to the team needing retention
Where do you see Vegas in 2026? Frankly if we can get that pick unprotected, I'd be pretty happy.
the market determines value and rentals just don't get these massive returns people expect. I bought into the hype too, but at least I pulled my head out of my ass and am looking at realty now.You can't make such a claim while ignoring the quality of the player as quality is what determines value. Shattenkirk is a terrible example as he is a poor defender and was not nearly as coveted as Hanifin is for a playoff run
Probably made it clear to other teams that he intends to test the market as a free agent.Type to me like I'm stupid.. how is that all Hanifin got in return?
Yup, putting it together now.lolProbably made it clear to other teams that he intends to test the market as a free agent.
I think that Conroy came out smelling like a rose on this deal.Maybe, but even then compared to previous pending UFA defensemen dealt for a 1st, this return is on par.
there was like 24 teams he could be traded to.Conroy's hands were tied because Hanifin was only willing to land at a couple of places.

Now of those 24 teams who’s going to spend assets on a player who has no intention of re-signing with you and could honestly just mail it in until the season is over and go where he wants? Nonethere was like 24 teams he could be traded to.
I d argue the return is not bad it s just on the lower end of the spectrum. Hanifin should likely be closer to Lindholm than Savard in terms of value. Same thing for Tanev should be closer to Chiarot return than what he got (but in this case it realy depends how you value the prospect I guess)Maybe, but even then compared to previous pending UFA defensemen dealt for a 1st, this return is on par.
Right, if I were Calgary I'd want the unprotected 2026.Might be even more ideal for the Flames. 2026 is unprotected and eventually Vegas is going to fall out of the playoffs.
well after winning 6 straight cups a change of scenary would be welcomeLol so if we use a first in 2024 as bait for another piece, this team seriously has no intention of rebuilding until near the end of the decade. Gonna be painful when they get to that point.
