I'll answer that. No one.

Over the past 10 years Lundqvist has been the best, and I doubt many would disagree. Not sure he's in full decline but he wasn't great last year - injuries, whatever. Besides Hasek, Roy and Brodeur, he's the best I have seen in my 30 years of watching hockey.

Back to Vesey though. If he thinks the Rangers are the place that give him the best shot at personal success, stats and future earning potential, he's wrong. If he thinks the Rangers give him the best chance to win a cup, he's wrong. They have a pretty good young core of players and a pretty bad defense, so I wouldn't call them "unbelievable" as some of the younger Rangers fans believe three beers in on a Friday night.

Can you imagine if some company "drafted" you out of college and gave you 1 option of where to live and work? I still don't get how any pro-sports drafts are legal to employees.

Small price to pay to become a multi-millionaire for playing a game.

Any player who doesn't like it, go flip burgers for McDonalds instead.

It's a good point. And they've always been able to land on their feet because of the draw of free agency (which is the thread we are in ). I was just replying to a list of prospects and that it is nothing to really be impressed with in a vacuum. Most teams boast a better prospect pool. But, to your point, most teams have to.

I think the Rangers have a bit more retooling to do. They need to make some better trades, but other than that, I think they are fine. They should be in the dog fight for the bottom half of the playoff picture.

I don't even mean it as though other teams HAVE to.

The Penguins and Blackhawks won cups based on drafting consecutively in the top 3. The Rangers (due to their consistency) have not had a single digit pick since the lockout. I'm not sure how many other teams can say that. The highest rated player that they drafted in that time period died before coming to North America.

You can't win a horse race riding a donkey. Some teams will try to go boom or bust and they fail miserably doing so more often than they succeed. In my opinion I think hands down a top rated NCAA free agent is more valuable than a bottom half 1st rounder in most draft years. It's not sexy but it has worked. Also let's not forget. The Rangers have at least 10 forwards under team control that are age 26 or younger. Vesey is in that group and they all (in theory should be peaking at the same time). The defense will be retooled by this time next year and I am very high on Shestyorkin who will be ready when Lundqvist declines. It's not flashy, but the Rangers aren't going anywhere.

When the majority of your forwards are under 26 are they really thin?

He shouldn't have any issues getting playing time during this contract. Plus, a good mix of vets and younger players - guys to learn from and guys to mess around with.

I doubt his focus was on HFs opinion on Girardi or Staals contract.

Don't forget they constantly trade first round picks. What is it 3 years now without a first rounder?

Right but they have signed Hayes and Vesey in that period, which is likely better than what they could have drafted.

Yikes.
Rangers are on a major downturn.
Can't see them getting past round 2 any time soon and likely not a playoff team in 2-3 years.

I'd take NYC taxes over any 20% increase in taxes from a Canadian team. A Harvard graduate told me this.

I doubt a Canadian team wins it all until they lower their tax rate so somebody actually wants to play for them
Sure we will just modify our entire federal tax structure so that multimillionaires can make more money to play a game in front of giant markets

And Zuccarello. And we got McDonagh and Zibanejad. For free.

We also got some tough breaks with Sauer and Cherepanov. Not many teams have had not one but two losses of that magnitude.

Zuccarello fits this example. I'm just talking about FAs that the Rangers signed without giving up assets.

I would rather "draft" Zuccarello, Hayes, Vesey and have a mystery bust, I take that over four mystery box 1st rounders any day.

AV rolls a pretty even TOI among his forwards anyway, so it shouldn't be too difficult to get playing time.

Especially considering all those first round picks we gave up were relatively late and none of the players drafted in that area have become impact players. We haven't missed out on anything yet.

I said this before but if I was Vessey I would have signed with a team that group of forward prospects is thin so I think this is a smart move for him

Wait - I thought their forward prospects, and prospects overall were "unbelievable"????

He's free to do whatever he wants, it's his life, etc.

I bet tomorrow he gets himself a really cool neck tattoo.

But it's Hockey's FUTURE so it's ZOMG 1st rounders.

What the Rangers have done is BETTER than having those picks.

Like many others have said, I see nothing special there either. I would have thought that if his thing was being in NY, he would have chosen the Islanders over the Rangers 110 times out of 100. I am stunned he chose the Rangers.

The islanders have one playoff series win in the tavares era.
