I know they're not related... but it ends up working out to be the same money. And I'd rather sign... not taking the time to look... Anthony Stolarz or David Rittich or a goalie like that in the offseason if we need that and not pay Mrazek 4M to be bad in net. At least Talbot was only making 2.5M
Yes, we swapped Husso's money this year for Mrazek, but I like this move if only because it prevents the need to spend in FA like we did with Husso (I know it was a trade, but it was at the draft, so basically the same thing). So now we have a pretty cheap pair of goalies and with the likelihood of injury or inconsistent play, Cossa will get plenty of opportunities.

The real big move is going to be improving our Top 4 D and getting another guy to boost the 2nd line. This move is actually pretty good from Steve and co. here because we're probably saving money overall and now can upgrade the bottom 6. Wish we hadn't moved on from Suter...

My brother in Christ, Husso is worse than marzek and this move cost us essentially nothing.
If he was on an expiring deal, sure. It would be whatever.

Another season of a caphit of 4.25 mil for a 33 year old goalie with a .890 sv% on the season is not nothing.

What in God's name are you talking about?

How does this save us money? We now have a horrible goalie signed for over 4 million next year. Talbot-Mrazek is a bottom 5 goalie tandem going into next year, maybe bottom 1...

You're confused man. You're the only person who thinks this is a good trade.

Well at least it’s a good draft next year.

It saves us money by not having to sign someone this off season, who will probably want as much or more due to the rising cap and want term. Are you really interested in getting into another Husso situation? Mrazek is of course, highly inconsistent, but he can be sent down to allow for Cossa to get some games in if/when that happens.

I'm simply not giving a reactionary take to a fairly nothing burger trade, but you're free to call me confused if that's your wish.

You guys don't understand what he is doing. He is NOT GOING TO PUNT THE FUTURE away because the media and fans are antsy. We have a bunch of young players coming very soon. And cap space. We are not good enough yet. I don't mind his approach right now.
I am of the even keel mindset so far as well. Do you mind elaborating why you feel ok with this move? For me, we apparently are punting on Lyon. Now if that means we are trying to trade him now, or have just seen enough to want to move on after the season, ok. I'm not opposed to having another goaltender around to insulate Cossa as he progresses, I actually find that prudent. I guess I'm just not sure if that was needed rather than maintaining the status quo. Did they think Lyon would not resign here? Did they just want to rid themselves of Veleno. I don't want massive moves this trade deadline, but this move has me scratching my head.

We could have signed a fringe AHL/NHL guy in the offseason for 950k that is equivalent to Mrazek.

I think you think Mrazek is the goalie he was a decade ago (and he was mediocre at best then). Mrazek is small in net, and is way too aggressive, but he does make the occasional highlight reel save.

Assuming we miss this year which seems inevitable, you're comfortable going into next season with Petr Mrazek as the starter at 4.25 million??

Thing is they/d be signing someone this summer. What are the chances we can sign someone okay (or better) to a 1 year contract? The market is extremely thin this summer. Now yzerman won't have to enter that minefield.

Also years with a .900 sv% or better:
Husso: 1
Mrazek: 10

I'm not sure how much Smith has left but he is having a better year than Veleno.

So we swap Veleno for a 35 year old center, and we get Mrazek back. If they are done as stated, I'm not really seeing the need or the point here. I'd think our obvious need would be a bottom pairing defender, but I guess we just wait out Petry. This deadline doesn't scream "trying to make playoff this season" to me.

Insulate Cossa by putting a hard to move contract with a bad goalie attached to it in front of him. Got it.

I would gladly gamble on being able to do better than 33 years old, .890 SV%, and 4.25 million dollars.

Pretty hard to do worse, tbh.
