Totally fine with ditching Veleno. But Mrazek is trash, so why would anybody want him for this year, let alone next year?

Again, love their amateur scouting. Wondering how many Long Islands their pro scouts slammed before suggesting this nonsense.

Mrazek was probably my least favorite goalie on this team during the past 10 year or so shuffle. I'm fine bringing in some new blood to mix it up, but I was relieved when we first sent Mrazek packing. Not thrilled that he of all goalies is the one we got today, guy was damn near a lock to allow 3+ every game.

Surely there was a 5th or 6th defender out there available for fairly cheap.

26M+ for shit players, on the books already for 2025-2026.

Compher, Chiarot, Holl, Gus, Mrazek, Talbot, Tank ... and that doesn't include Copp or Ras.

Regardless of how much of a homer, keener you are .... that's significant.

kidding aside dont watch the haeks except againt DRW. think he has a reputed to b a better goalie now. perhaps just looking at his S% doesnt tell entire story considering he was playing for a rather bad team.

There was. Jokiharju got traded for a 4th rounder. He's obviously nothing special, but if Yzerman would have acquired someone like Jokiharju, we could have benched Justin the pylon Holl

So we swap Veleno for a 35 year old center, and we get Mrazek back. If they are done as stated, I'm not really seeing the need or the point here. I'd think our obvious need would be a bottom pairing defender, but I guess we just wait out Petry. This deadline doesn't scream "trying to make playoff this season" to me.
Hawks fan here. Watched every game. Not sure Smith ever played centre. Winger.

Sorry guys but Yzerman knows more than you and I and I know its hard to accept lol. No hasty dumb ass impulsive trades to 'save his job'. He is building the team the right way. Not mortgaging the future for some short term flame out. The exact opposite what Holland did towards the end. Holland drafted terrible + burned picks to keep a streak alive. f*** that. Build the team for long term success!
So, since Stevie knows more than we do, we can’t question or criticize his moves? Are we supposed to just nod our heads eagerly with every move or statement? Sounds like a fun board…

Tell me, how does trading a 25 year old center for a 35 year old 4th liner who will be a UFA and a 33 year old goalie who is one of the worst in the league and costs more next season than both our current goalies, build for the long term?

Gotta wonder if there's ever a point where all fans look at Yzerman and say wait a minute... the ability to perceive these trash moves as some sort of master plan or demonstration in proper rebuilding should get old at some point right???

Has yzerman come out and said why yet?

They were looking ahead to the 2025 offseason for acquiring goalies and the cost/benefit is not their in their eyes because the good goalies springing loose are going to be really really expensive and the bargain goalies available are bargains for a reason.

It’s a dipshit reason because were Mrazek a UFA coming up, he’d be lucky to get the deal Talbot got this year and instead they went ahead and traded to get him at almost twice that.

Mrazek is gonna end up playing like 25-30 games next year and play them badly

I fear Mrazek won't be any better than Husso.

Let's see how it all pans out. But don't be suprised if there are opportunities that Yzerman will have to pass on due to cap next year.

We have enough space.

Right now yeah, by my count there are 20 million to re-sign Kane, Johansson and Elmer. Together it's probably around 10-12 million, Johansson and Elmer at 2-3 million each, Kane 5-6 million.

Add another plug to replace Motte, 1 million.

That's pretty much 7-9 million left. With this cap Yzerman needs to find help on defense, especially 3rd pair.

After that there's not nearly enough to splash on a impact player.

You could let Kane walk. But I'd rather have Kane than Mrazek honestly.

The only thing I will remember of Joe Veleno’s time in Detroit is people ‘hype’ posting his off-season shirtless stationary bike workouts. (Turns out that is not at all relevant to hockey playing abilities…)

As for Mrazek… My goodness what a complete RUG PULL this is !!
I was pumped Husso was finally gone… and just one week later this may actually be worse.

did Yzerman get robbed? It’s just a nothing trade, for either team quite frankly
Robbed? No. But it was still an asinine trade because Mrazek is awful and there was no need to spend assets for crap in return.

Deal Veleno, by all means. But if nothing else, deal him for a useful rental instead of handcuffing yourself to a lousy goaltender next year.

It was almost like Yzerman had seller's remorse from ditching Husso, so he rushed out and found the next worst option.
