Vegas about to circumvent cap again? UPD: Mark Stone back practicing.

Mark Stone is always injured enough to be on LTIR but will play through it in the playoffs. Simple as that.

I can recall an instance circa 2010 or 2011 where someone was eligible to come off LTIR and generally acknowledged to be fit enough to play, but couldn't come off LTIR because of cap reasons. I think they had to wait a week or so to finally come off and get into the lineup. I want to say it happened again in 2016 or 2017, but I'm less certain of that.

It happens, can happen, may happen again in the future, but it's obviously an exceedingly rare occurrence.

Right, but it doesn't even appear that holding a player on LTIR for any reason is prohibited.

That seems like it would be a problem for the PA.

Imagine a scenario where player A gets placed on LTIR for legitimate reasons and the team uses his cap space on Player B.

Two months later Player A is fit to play, but the GM doesn't like him, and so leaves him there in favour of not moving cap space out somewhere else.

From my reading of the passages I quoted, and the examples they've given, this would be permitted.

There's some sound logic. It one thing for it to happen once, but 3 straight years , come on. Same guys for the most part , and all of a sudden you have like 16 mil in LTIR cap space at the TDL. They were able to add over 10 mil in cap money at the TDL with the 3 guys they got. They will be 15 mil over the cap when the playoff starts . It's fishy as F no matter how you look at it.
It's a damn shame the league can't do anything about it.

Wait, it can - as some of us have pointed out across 79 pages and counting - and it doesn't.

🤔 Almost like there's an explanation for this, but ... damn, I can't think of what that might be. We probably just need to make a rule that makes the league ... :biglaugh:

Why would it be a problem for the PA? The player on LTIR still gets paid, someone else who's on the roster is getting paid. I mean, after accounting for the 50/50 split the players in aggregate are still getting the same amount and so [using your labeling below] whatever Player B makes has to come out of the pockets of all the other players in the league, but B is getting service time and a chance to earn a(nother, maybe larger) contract in the future by getting to play.

Admittedly it's an absurd idea, but I've come up with those as well to illustrate things.

That said, in your scenario Player A is still getting paid. And Player B has a roster spot and is getting paid. And, both are still accruing service time though the argument against might be "A isn't getting games played toward whatever benefits and accomplishments" which probably still isn't actionable by the NHLPA. And the same thing could be accomplished by having A off LTIR but getting parked in the press box, and there's nothing A could do about it.

I don't think it's that absurd to be honest.

Who are the worst contracts in the league? If one of those guys gets put on LTIR at the beginning of the season, should they be worried that their GM will value their cap space more than what they bring? What incentives does that provide a GM that would love to bury a contract?

If there is really no need to return a player to the active roster when healthy (which admittedly appears to be the case) then I think the system is actually ripe for abuse.

Just like how I felt about St Louis basically getting away with murder in 2019, you have to just respect that they know that the league isn't going to do anything about it and are fully taking advantage of that. Don't hate the player, hate the game.
or just enjoy the game.

What a bunch of f***ing losers.
