Can the oilers call up Campbell and then LTIR him after an injury in warmup? Asking for friend ...

But the old rules would still apply during the season, so how would that be done?

Teams under the salary cap accrue cap space as the season progresses.

Simple example: a team $2m under the cap for the first half of the season can later run an active roster $2m over the salary cap for the second half of the season.

This accrued cap space is pro-rated further as the season progress. A team $2m under the cap until the trade deadline can run an active roster approximately $9m (4.5x banked cap space) over the cap after the trade deadline.

I admit I don't know the ins and outs of accrued space but this seems like small potatoes compared to teams shelving a high cap player on LTIR and activating them when the cap goes away. It's not like there are big ticket players they could add after the deadline or during the playoffs. I'm not sure how this all applies to my suggestion tbh

It's only a matter of time until this hilariously backfires and the team misses the playoffs. (whether it be Vegas or someone else)
Vegas did miss the playoffs when they tried the LTIR “shuffle” a couple years ago. When they started to slide, they brought the players back but it was too late. Did it again last year. If they are doing it again, this is their 3rd time doing they would be cheating.

Add Mark Stone. I fully anticipate them to circumvent the cap... again...

Vegas is going to be the team that closes this loop hole. It's just so incredibly blatant and over the top at this point. Vegas is about as good for the sport as Arizona is at this point.

We all know they will. The NHL barely verifies this shit. Plus the Golden knights are their desert success.

I meant a team under the cap could add the big ticket players on or before the trade deadline. Then run a roster millions over the cap after the trade deadline.

You don't read the posts of things you comment on, do you?

Hopefully they end of tanking because of this and miss the playoffs....not likely though.

Eichel is likely back in March but truth was never what you have been going for with this thread that had zero research beyond "Eichel on LTIR?!?!?!"

Lol they should announce they are changing the rules that the cap now applies during the playoffs, right after Vegas blows their assets to cheat again

Cap already killed the deadline.
It didn't, as nearly 20 years of trade deadline transactions under the salary cap system have shown.

But if you want to discourage that practice of using LTIR as a crutch, it has to no longer be a crutch. As others have suggested, there could be some kind of flexibility.
Like ... say ... allowing teams to have cap flexibility when players get hurt, and the team needs to be able to call up players or otherwise acquire players as replacements for guys who are expected to be out for an extended period of time?

🤔

Except when they are activated, you have to sit the guys you acquired.

I think it was a valid question for the mains. They did it last year. And now it appears they could be doing it again.

Simple if you cannot come off LTIR 2 weeks before end of the season, you are ineligible for the playoffs
Player breaks a leg in early March, recovery time is 6-8 weeks. Regular season ends in 5 weeks. Player is eligible for LTIR, team needs to designate him to create cap space for a call-up to fill out the playing roster.

I'm sure the NHLPA will be completely fine with the team going to the player and saying "sorry, you gotta get off IR and get your ass out on the ice. I know, your leg isn't fully healed and you wouldn't pass a physical right now. Tough f***ing shit, if you wanna play in the playoffs lace 'em up; if you get hurt again because the bone hasn't healed properly, too f***ing bad."

Except when they are activated, you have to sit the guys you acquired.
I swear to god, it's like people don't read examples of why this doesn't work and think "if I just keep repeating this, it invalidates all the reasons why it won't."

The NHLPA also doesn't mind a player that could have returned earlier but didn't because they wanted to wait for the playoffs to bring them back. The NHLPA only cares about money. Just like the owners.
