Vancouver led the league in points at Christmas, Can they continue this run into the New Year?

I’ve mentioned this a few times, but the Canucks xGF% isn’t bad since they were terrible during their super hot start with multiple blowouts, which was likely skewed by score effects. Since the November 11th game against the Leafs, they have a 51% xGF at 5v5, which is 11th in the league, and they’ve been one of the best in limiting giving up rush chances against. Not top of the league good obviously, but they should also be able to outscore their xGF% due to having good shooters and good goaltending. Their GF% will go down but I think it’s very likely their xGF% will also go up as the year goes on, and their GF% will still be above their xGF%. That would mean a likely top 10 GF% overall still 5v5.
Why do you even bother trying to justify the stupidity of people who overvalue xG?

They don’t actually give a shit about analyzing hockey, it’s all just to give them numbers so the narrative they already subscribe to seems justifiable (vs just claiming the team leading the league in points and goal differential actually sucks).

You’re never going to convince anyone of anything and even trying justifies their dumb position.

Rangers are nothing like the 2011 Canucks, that team was great 5 on 5. They allowed the fewest goals and scored the 6th most.

Boston was #1 in goals for and against at 5 on 5.

and won in OT off a missed trip.
I thought that 2011 canucks team was number 1 in GF, GA, PP and number 3 in PK?? Correct me if am wrong but that 2011 canucks team had the best offense

I like the canucks but I think they've had a pretty easy schedule thus far. I think they're overachieving and will come back down to earth

Correct.

but at 5 on 5 the Bruins were better. Not by a big margin.

I see, although canucks could have beaten the Bruins if half their lineup wasnt injured. Hamhuis being out after game 2 was a big blow to that D who had injured Ehrhoff and Edler on it with suspended Rome.

All these people in the thread missing the "quietly" joke and mistaking it for lack of awareness (or just knowingly ignoring it) makes me sad.

On top of it being a reference to something that Canucks fans have been already mocked for (and are now laughing at themselves about in good humor), it's dripping with obvious intentional sarcasm and irony.

To come in and go "Nothing quiet about it! LOL!" is just dumb.

Whatever hater.

I just wish people like you wouldn't even pretend to be anything but bitter haters who wish for the Canucks to fail. Instead it's just constantly going on about how they aren't actually that good.
Hopefully this is based on some history you have with this poster previously being disingenuous, and not strictly due to what seems to be a pretty innocuous comment where a Canucks fan has reserved expectations.

Huh? They had one of the toughest schedules in the season so far with the amount of travelling they had to do, accompanied with plenty of back to back situations.

Nope. He just blindly insults any canuck fan who doesn't think the team is the greatest ever.

Fake Canuck fans who feel the need to broadcast how much they think the team sucks.

Go be fans of another team at that point.

Not sure what world anyone is living in when anything involving the Canucks is done ‘quietly’

Amazing how Vancouver fans legitlmately enjoying their teams success after years of mediocre hockey is such a threat to other fanbases

There’s a difference between being able to enjoy your team doing well and obnoxiously gloating/ flooding a general hockey subforum with various accomplishments the team has over the season. I reeks of insecurity and a lack of social awareness.

They've had a strong start to the season. They're not first in points percentage, but having played a lot of games in a short period of time they've got the results.

They don't have the track record to be deemed a legit contender just yet but they have transitioned from mediocre team wasting their young talent to a good team.

Considering where the franchise was at it's a great development. Hopefully can build on it into the second half.

Though I don't even think the most die hard Canuck fans think they are Cup champs yet, the fact is they are much improved and they are not a fluke...I still do not think they are in the tier of Vegas or Avs but in the second tier of Dallas, LA, Vancouver and Winnipeg...and that is still really good....and it must be admitted....parity is so close, the distance from those second tier teams to the top teams of Vegas and Colorado, is not that far.....it is not unthinkable that a team like Vancouver could go to the Cup.......it isn't like there is any team out there that is the 1976 Montreal Canadians.....I am impressed by 2 Canadian teams....Vancouver and Winnipeg.....to me they are not flukes but real.....

They're first in regulation points% I believe, which says a lot.

Vegas is real for sure. I don't think you can consider the Avs a true contender if they don't fix their 2nd line. Forcing them to over play their core extensively 30+ games in.

While I cannot predict post season success for the Canucks, they probably need their licks first. they have so many things going for them this season, the confluence of so many positive factors makes me think the drop-off everyone is expecting would be a little less dramatic than they predict. There is no glaring weakness other than the oft mentioned PDO. With 3 scoring lines depth, elite pieces in key positions, and a historically strong coaching staff, I think they finish with home ice at least. That is a massive improvement, and sustainable. Like Carolina though, even when everything seems set to soar, there can be injuries that ruin everything. For this team, if Hughes go down, and to a lesser extent, EP, the season is in jeopardy.
