What it also says to me is that the Canucks feel they've got kids in Abbotsford who are really 'close' and a guy like Sprong on a one-year contract was only getting in the way. They probably thought they'd lose him on waivers anyway, so they got something for him.
What exactly did they get for him though?

I wouldn’t classify most of these reactions as freaking out, but I am disappointed that the Sprong experiment ended so quickly and that he was given so little rope by Tocchet. Especially considering that most of the team struggled with defensive assignments through the first 8-10 games.

Maybe I’m placing too much emphasis on his preseason highlight reel goal but imo he looked dangerous off the rush consistently enough given his minutes that he deserved a longer look, especially with Boeser potentially out for an extended period.
Trade has zero (0%) to do with talent, on-ice production, Tocchet

Entirely his attitude.

Why do you think he's been kicked off 6 (six!!) teams so far

I didn’t think he was bad on the 4th line, he brought speed and would rush the puck with such finesse - was kind of refreshing.

In the playoffs, I can see his style being useless, on the 4th line so no big deal.

Prob did the player a solid as it didn’t work out with him in the top 6

Hard to figure:

Really didn't give Sprong much of a look. Can see he has some skill, although he wasn't scoring. But he seemed to be giving an effort and in some of the games was contributing by supplying a decent forecheck and at least getting the puck into the offensive zone. In addition, he did create some traffic toward the net. I think you could make a case he's been better than Heinen.

Think you might have expected something back. Even a late round draft. Maybe wishful thinking but so many teams are having trouble scoring you might hope you could get something.

As suggested might have something to do with the cap or moving players up and down from the farm. But none look particularly ready and the Canucks immediately lose some depth.

Out of the blue strange move and Strong better not play well with a divisional opponent. Seems like Allvin has no trouble making such potentially dangerous divisional trades. In fact, most of the trades have been with direct rivals. In this case, if you want to be artful, the hope might be it ties up some Kracken cap space that might have used at the trade deadline.

Also confirms that Rutherford and Allvin never rest.

I'm confused. Recognizing his downside with regards to some defensive deficiencies, he's still a solid, heavy player with speed who does score from the bottom of the roster. He can forecheck and is difficult to move off the puck. He's a guy you try and figure out. Sorry to see him go.

Boy are we going to be surprised when we get a first, a second and a depth player back from this trade later in the season. ha ha Well, perhaps there's a deal in place to take on some cap for the Canucks at the deadline? Is that a thing?

Daniel Wrong amirite.

But seriously, don't love this. Would rather have hom sitting in the press box trying to improve his defensive awareness over time. I'm assuming future considerations = an expiring contract in late June, so just don't see the point of trading him now.

The contract spot being needed is the only thing I guess, but don't think that's the case. Likely just giving a guy who the coach wasn't trusting the chance to play elsewhere, but would have kept him for the time being (seeing we aren't likely getting anything of value back).

Not really surprising but... (probably a late pick, not even necessarily for the 2025 draft)

Hey

no picks went out the door, so this is a good trade, as this opens up a contract spot

This is only $200k out of aqua man’s pockets in the signing bonus

I bet those performance bonuses are crazy difficult to reach for us to get a pick.

Sprong was in a third-fourth line role in Vancouver. If you're going to be a depth forward in Tocchet's system, then you have to be a superior defensive forward, it's that simple.

I think the Canucks coaching staff tried working with him to improve him as a defensive player. But clearly it wasn't taking. A guy like Bains isn't as fast, but he's a far better defensive player and therefore a better fit.

It was an honest attempt by the Canucks to improve their depth scoring when they signed Sprong. But there's a reason why he's now on his seventh NHL organization in seven seasons.
Up until the last few games the lines were in a blender with a rotating cast of characters through the top six and we were having defensive breakdowns up and down the lineup. I would have liked to see Sprong get an honest audition in a scoring role given those circumstances. But c’est la vie.

I don’t think JR and Allvin cares about reading with divisional team, at all.

But he has now been acquired by a team that had him before so there goes your theory.

I think this is a case of management doing what they can to find a fit a fit for him if it didn’t work out in Vancouver.

Pretty much a nothing move. If they didn't see a long term fit, no reason to have him on the roster with Joshua coming back, and Lekkerimaki knocking on the door. He'd be eating up cap space sitting in the press box. Better to get a potential pick back and send him to a place he's comfortable than lose him on waivers for nothing.
