In a recent post-practice interview, Tocchet specifically said that Bains isn’t a prospect but a “good young NHL player”. This feels like a move where Tocchet wants Bains in the line-up over Sprong.
What exactly did they get for him though? What it also says to me is that the Canucks feel they've got kids in Abbotsford who are really 'close' and a guy like Sprong on a one-year contract was only getting in the way. They probably thought they'd lose him on waivers anyway, so they got something for him.
Trade has zero (0%) to do with talent, on-ice production, TocchetI wouldn’t classify most of these reactions as freaking out, but I am disappointed that the Sprong experiment ended so quickly and that he was given so little rope by Tocchet. Especially considering that most of the team struggled with defensive assignments through the first 8-10 games.
Maybe I’m placing too much emphasis on his preseason highlight reel goal but imo he looked dangerous off the rush consistently enough given his minutes that he deserved a longer look, especially with Boeser potentially out for an extended period.
Who knows? But 'future considerations' is still better than losing him on waivers for nothing. What exactly did they get for him though?
Agreed. That .670 winning pctg has been weak at best. I want Willie Desisrdins back.Tocchet is starting to annoy me a bit. Just a bit.
He couldn't coach powerplay to save his own life, and now he's forcing out Sprong?
What exactly did they get for him though?
Up until the last few games the lines were in a blender with a rotating cast of characters through the top six and we were having defensive breakdowns up and down the lineup. I would have liked to see Sprong get an honest audition in a scoring role given those circumstances. But c’est la vie.Sprong was in a third-fourth line role in Vancouver. If you're going to be a depth forward in Tocchet's system, then you have to be a superior defensive forward, it's that simple.
I think the Canucks coaching staff tried working with him to improve him as a defensive player. But clearly it wasn't taking. A guy like Bains isn't as fast, but he's a far better defensive player and therefore a better fit.
It was an honest attempt by the Canucks to improve their depth scoring when they signed Sprong. But there's a reason why he's now on his seventh NHL organization in seven seasons.
Why do you think he's been kicked off 6 (six!!) teams so far
I don’t think JR and Allvin cares about reading with divisional team, at all.Hard to figure:
Really didn't give Sprong much of a look. Can see he has some skill, although he wasn't scoring. But he seemed to be giving an effort and in some of the games was contributing by supplying a decent forecheck and at least getting the puck into the offensive zone. In addition, he did create some traffic toward the net. I think you could make a case he's been better than Heinen.
Think you might have expected something back. Even a late round draft. Maybe wishful thinking but so many teams are having trouble scoring you might hope you could get something.
As suggested might have something to do with the cap or moving players up and down from the farm. But none look particularly ready and the Canucks immediately lose some depth.
Out of the blue strange move and Strong better not play well with a divisional opponent. Seems like Allvin has no trouble making such potentially dangerous divisional trades. In fact, most of the trades have been with direct rivals. In this case, if you want to be artful, the hope might be it ties up some Kracken cap space that might have used at the trade deadline.
Also confirms that Rutherford and Allvin never rest.
oh we might get someting out of this? Not really surprising but... (probably a late pick, not even necessarily for the 2025 draft)

Been told "future considerations is based on his performance" sooooo some kind of pick [contains quote post or other embedded content]bsky.app
Those dope-smokin' tulip pickers! And everyone knows that they can play field hockey but not ice hockey. He's Dutch.
I'm hearing that Sprong will be filing a complaint with the BC Human Rights Tribunal for this gross discrimination.
Trade has zero (0%) to do with talent, on-ice production, Tocchet
Entirely his attitude.
Why do you think he's been kicked off 6 (six!!) teams so far
Well...not guaranteed. Sometimes both teams will just agree to basically forget about it and not send anything the other way. Sometimes it'll result in a late pick or an AHL/depth player.oh we might get someting out of this?
