Wonder if the league ever goes to the idea of running essentially 10 or 11F and using one or two of the extra F spots for specific utilities. e.g., Juulsen for the PK, Sprong for 3rd periods when teams sit back and are just dumping it in.

Sprong is one of those guys like Virtanen who’s just hard to fit into a lineup. He’s too individualistic to mesh with good top six players and doesn’t have the PK usage and ability to be trusted when holding a lead in the third period like you need from a bottom six player. Sure he might be able to pop in a few goals playing against some teams AHL level fourth lines and bottom pairings (like Virtanen did) but he’s just too limited and will probably hurt the team as much as he helps.

Yeah, bizarre timing unless Boeser has been immediately cleared, which seems unlikely.

Lekkerimaki is getting ventilated at ES in Abbotsford and I don't like any notion of 'doing a Gaudette' and yanking a guy back and forth when he's adjusting to his first season of pro hockey. Give him 40 games there before making any decisions.

I suspect that Tocchet has voiced that he prefers Bains in the squad over Sprong (ironically given the good chemistry of those two players) and that's why this has happened.

FYI. SHL is a high level pro hockey league. And I presume you are basing your "he is getting ventilated" on. his minus figure so far in Abby. Last year in the SHL he was near the top of his team in plus minus, in a league that is arguably superior to the AHL. He was a plus 6 ob a terrible Orebro team.

Three things I take out of the move:

One, they prefer Bains over Sprong on the fourth line. Weird, as I thought they had good chemistry together, but with Joshua getting healthy there's a space issue. Tocchet calling Bains a good young player and not a prospect was pretty telling.

Two, roster space is about to become an issue. Joshua is coming back, and I'm praying this means good news on Boeser not being out long term.

Three, they're thinking about cap space. Bains/Raty can constantly yo-yo up and down as the 13th forward, which helps them accrue space quicker. I would've be surprised if this was done because they math'd out that this allows them to make a move for a blueliner in late January/early Feb instead of March.

Its not as if it's a big issue to lose Sprong but unless there is some 4d chess in play, I fail to see how this move makes the team better.

With other moves, you can see the reasoning but I can't really see a good reason to move sprong at this point in time.

I guess we'll see if this move is linked to something else in the works

Return is probably based on what Sprong does in Seattle......if he recovers his scoring touch, maybe a late round pick from the Kraken.

Or maybe there's a guy on their Coachella Valley farm team the Canucks have their eye one. Regardless, there's one thing you have to say about Allvin. When he decides a guy isn't working out, he doesn't hesitate to pull the trigger

Sprong, Mikheyev, Kuzmenko, Podkolzin, Beauvillier and Dickinson---all jettisoned. And he doesn't much care which team they go to. No hesitation in trading these guys, even to divisional opponents.

Locking in my prediction here: Either McCarron or Jankowski is getting moved here by Monday.

Lekkerimaki is -8 and hasn't produced shit at 5v5 so I doubt there's going to be a long-term fit on the roster this season.

I knew him way back in Major Junior and he was a massive asshat and a locker room cancer. With how many teams he's played on and the inability to really stick anywhere I wonder if this hasn't changed. He didn't get along with the coaches, made crazy demands, stayed away from teammates and wouldnt sign anything for kids or fans. He was a massive diva.

On the one hand, it's odd but... I do kind of get the madness. Bains has played much better after a slow start, Raty's looked decently promising and it's all but written in stone they want to give Lekk a chance. All in all, it makes more sense to give that spot to a rookie we have control over than a one dimensional UFA we aren't going to keep.

As for waiving him. Ehh, it's irrelevant. He absolutely gets claimed by someone.

It's pretty obvious they sent him to Seattle as a solid to the player, it's been reported he wanted to go back to Seattle if things didn't work out here.

Honestly, it seems like the team's pretty happy with where Lekkerimaki and Raty are at right now, and with Joshua coming back, they feel they didn't really have a place for Sprong anymore. Better send him somewhere where he'll get an opportunity than riding the bench.
