That doesn't change the fact that those two players have been awful when they were projected to be difference makers.

Tavares is a massive issue at this point.
I agree with both points, I just think it's worth saying because so many just repeat the idea that it's impossible to have good effective depth when you have 3 going on 4 huge contracts up front because there is no money to go around. when we did have money to spend even with the big contracts, and didn't manage to get a single good player with it

It hurts to say it - but this season and next season are feeling like washes. The team will have a chance to rebuild itself around Matthews, Nylander and maybe Marner starting Summer 2025 when Tavares' 11M comes off the books. I don't see how they can improve themselves before that point.

Not a ringing endorsement for Keefe:

William Nylander said the Leafs were missing “a little bit of competitiveness” from puck drop, and it was evident which side was getting coached by Tocchet.

“Probably one of the best coaches in the world right now,” Max Domi said. “You watch these guys play, they’re always ready to go.”

Yeah. I think Keefe has lost the room. Not that he’s the only issue as the team has done this with another coach. A lot of changes will hopefully come soon. Turfing Keefe will be a big move that could make a difference immediately though.

These guys are professional athletes. Saturday night against Vancouver when they have been struggling they shouldn’t need the coach to be motivating them.

Ooof, definitely not good for Keefe or the players. Imagine admitting you aren't ready to play as a professional athlete on a losing skid

This might be one of the reasons why Domi wears out his welcome with so many teams. Maybe best to keep a bit quiet given your own stats, friend....

They haven’t been ready to play for 10 years.
Last night wasn’t any special circumstance.
Not starting on time, passive, scramble to come back, blow it once you do, lack of compete, does this not seem like a theme for this core? It wasn’t Jones’ fault 5 years ago. Or Bertuzzi, Domi, etc.

3 of those goals aren’t on Jones, Demko let in a couple of muffins as well. Shots don’t always tell the whole story

Which then leads me to this question.

If Niemala, Kokkonen or Villeneuve were the players defending on some of the goals how many here would support them, or would they say they just aren't ready for the NHL?

So if you are in the "aren't ready for the NHL" group, would you prefer to just let the existing defensive core play on knowing, they're on the downslope of their careers, or would you rather say I'll take the same performance from players who are on the upslope of their careers?

I read posts on this forum which frequently suggest the prospects aren't ready or aren't capable or aren't good enough, and wonder if that is just fear? Fear that they might look just as bad as players who used to be much better, but have left those years behind? "He'll be better, just had an off night. Or perhaps he's playing through something? Or Jones should have had it. Or Nylander should have covered that man who was 15 feet away with the puck after he covered the guy heading to the net."

Would you rather lose with the vets and gain nothing or lose with the youngsters and gain experience?

Marner might have to go too.if u wanna sign McDavid lol

Keefe got handed the keys to a rogue group that was never gonna listen to anyone

Paying your phone bill while ignoring your mortgage isn’t a good plan either imo…….
you may continue posting of nothing except post doom dreams of a scorched earth rebuild in 2025 and I will continue to make a little post every once in a while in a PGT about a lineup move I wouldn't mind see happening, ok?

Being outshot 46 to 21 hardly qualifies as being "ready to go"

Of course not.
However the shots do indicate the Leafs didn't quit.
Leafs gave away the game by their defensive play.
Some of those goals against are definitely on Jones.

And yeah, Nylander's top corner from inside the blueline ... what a shot and how did Demko not see it? There was a screen, but probably never thought a Leafs player would shoot to score without a couple fancy plays and passes. Maybe thought it was marner and was looking to see where Matthews was? ( just a joke before any chaste knights rush to protect marner)

Keefe didn't notice Holl going from passable to complete dog shit, either, so this is a recurring theme. As is shoving the same players into the same situations and being stunned they're getting the same results.

Well... Except for the part where Bert isn't actually playing with any of those stars, but is instead tethered to a rapidly declining John Tavares....

Bertuzzi has gotten a lot of time with Tavares and Nylander, but I think UFA’s might look at this situation like Keefe is going to put me in the dog house plus these guys aren’t doing anything for me stats wise.

Leafs seem to be running a lot of guys into the ground with their play style. It’s all slightly different circumstances but how did Muzzin, Brodie, Holl, Gardiner and Giordano all go from various states of importance to physically and broken down during their Toronto stint?

Link?

I'd like someone to paraphrase this, or give some context. Must be more to it.

I'd paraphrase it to, "That's what a good coached team looks like. That isn't us."

They were expecting him to maybe play half a dozen games as a short-term injury replacement and spend most of the season with the Marlies.

This guy was a coach???

Is he actually a good coach or just a meathead who just got really lucky one year?
Yeah but his brother Bobby "how are ya" was the GM
