Confirmed Signing with Link: [VAN] F Elias Pettersson signs extension with Canucks (8 years, $11.6M AAV)

Even as a Leafs fan, you can’t really use Leafs salaries as benchmarks, we pay our stars higher than everyone basically always. Agents luck their lips when negotiating with the Leafs.

I’m gonna guess 8x$12.

I don't think it's fair to say its a Leafs thing, but it was definitely a Kyle Dubas thing.

Kyle's negotiating style was always to dim the lights, put on a Sade CD and then bend over his desk.

Unfortunately for Brad Treliving, he has to sign the next contracts coming off the goofy Dubas ones, meaning he's already in a tough spot.

What do you think 25 year old 100pt players with Selke votes are going to sign for these days on long term deals? He left at least $500k on the table. I’d guess closer to $1M. That’s a steal.
I think he's right around fair value. Prime Malkin signed for 8 years at 14.77% of the cap. He had won a Conn Smythe, 2 Art Ross, and a Hart. That would make him a ~13MM player based on next year's cap. So a notch below prime Malkin seems fair for prime Petterson.

Very happy morning for Canucks fans. Also stoked to get this distraction over with so Pettersson can start focusing just on hockey again. 11.6 is a very good deal for Pettersson, he even taken a bit of a discount to make room for other Canuck transactions. Stoked about that.

Brilliant negotiation move by Canucks management that worked, threatening a trade to Carolina if he didn't start to negotiate. Genius.

Overall happy day in Canucks land, they get to keep their elite centerman during his entire prime years.

Perfect news to spend your final day in Mexico. Wohoo.

Glad to have a franchise centre that isn't exclusively focused on taking the most money possible at the most convenient term for him.

That’s a single data point though - and from quite a while ago. The Leafs have multiple more recent data points that suggest something different. On balance, I see better than fair for the team here.

I thought it was reported he was sitting on 8x12
Sounds like he shouldn't have sat.
Also Friedman probably gets fed false info sometimes to move things along. He's a plant as much as he is an insider - you can't only be one of the two; it's a give & take game.

Nylander outscored Pettersson 3 of the last 4 years, including this one.

Pettersson is 2 years younger and a 100pt C.

You're also comparing by year and not age.

D+6: Pettersson, 102 in 80 vs Nylander's 59 in 68

D+5: Pettersson 68 in 80 vs Nylander's 27 in 54

D+4: Pettersson 21 in 26 vs Nylander's 61 in 82

D+3: Pettersson 66 in 68 vs Nylander's 61 in 81

This year, 75 in 62 so far, vs Nylander's D+7 of 42 in 51.

Pettersson crushes when you look at direct year by year comparison, Nylander is only close because he's been 2 years ahead developmentally.

Well congrats Canucks, that's actually not a bad contract. I was expecting >12.5.

I still don't think he's $4.5m better than Miller, but at least this isn't terrible

This is beyond what I expect by a little. I was expecting a 12 like most people, I was also not expecting the full 8. So a lower cap for longer term is too good to be true. EP demonstrated that he is a driven athlete that wants to win every year since he was drafted. One of the quotes from Lars Lindgren (the Scout that pushed for him over Glass) back in 2017 is that

“Elias is never getting relaxed and thinking ‘I’ve already made it.’ He does not feel like that kind of player,” Lindgren said. “It feels like he wants to push himself to become better every day. Some players score a couple of goals and think they are pretty good, but I don’t see anything like that in Elias’ nature.

Every year from running up hills in Sweden, to training with Emil in Ånge, to world championships and that crazy season with Vaxjo, and every season in Vancouver, he's been getting better and better, he learnt a valuable maturity lesson in not resting two summers ago while focusing on the wrong things and came out this season being one of the 4 pillars that lead to them being true contenders. He still has lots of room to improve.

This is a major step for this organisation. Locking up your homegrown superstar center is something we have only done once with Henrik in 50 years, and bodes well for the next 8 years as the team finally, finally steps out from under the grim Benning led regime.
