Confirmed Signing with Link: [VAN] F Elias Pettersson signs extension with Canucks (8 years, $11.6M AAV)

Everyone had Pettersson pegged at $12.5+ ore more per year.

I wonder how big of an impact on Pettersson's signing and cap hit/AAV the Allvin conversation with Carolina had on all of that.

Would be impressive as hell if Allvin going to Carolina not only pushed Pettersson back to the table but also managed to save them around a million + per year doing it.

Decent signing for sure. Hard to argue with it

We can get a whole ELC/call up player more compared to what most Canucks fans said they were comfortable with, for max term.

I like this.

I also like how many media wags can STFU about Pettersson not being happy here, and that we should have a huge drop off in crap offers from other fans for Petey.

All in all, this was good news this morning.

I'd say 9 million

That wouldn't be it. The most recently signed name top 6 C were :

Larkin 8.7m
Horvat 8.5m
Dubois 8.5m
Scheifele 8.5m
Aho 9.75m

Petterson is flat out a tier above these guys and I say that as fan of Aho. Guys in the elite tier got

MacKinnon 12.6m
Matthews 13.25m

These are the name C's that have signed since the start of 2023. Petterson coming in at 11.6m is right on the money in my opinion. Lots were saying 12.5m but that was probably more a "it might take this to get it done vs a this is what he's currently worth". In the end, the cap is finally increasing and we will see star players contracts rise with it.

He asked a guy who said EP was overpaid by 2.6 million what he thinks 100 point players should go for.

I'd hazard a guess he thinks it's 9 million.

The problem is the big 4 contracts are chokers. If they played like they do in the regular season in the playoffs there wouldn't be any problems.
Sorry are you talking about ours or Toronto's?? If the Leafs group I agree, but our group of stars are hardly chokers, e.g. shown in the bubble against bigger/ tougher teams like the Blues/ Wild.

Oh I think it’ll be fine, especially with how the cap should trend. Hence why I never said it was bad and was just more of an observation on what stance he will take

You need those big 3, it’s the teams that focus on forwards and neglect defence/goaltending that suffer (Toronto)

Marner/Matthews/Nylander - not the greatest

McDavid/Draisaitl/Nurse - Nurse shortcomings is covered by McDavid’s offence

Pettersson/Miller/Hughes - Hughes/Miller usually pick up for Pettersson
I think our three is pretty good; Miller's that beast, do-it-all #1 C, Petey can definitely be a #2 in all situations (relative to Miller, who is more the PP QB, physical presence, faceoff maven and sniper, while Petey is elite in his own right but defers in the draws and playmaking on special teams to JT), and then Hughes controls everything with his skating and passing, like they said he would from his draft.

Turns out they already started negotiating during the all star game.

Since that Canucks 5-6-4

In summary his agent pat brisson, talked Petey into signing now to help, the management prepare for trade deadline. They also had to deploy Jp Barry johan atberg (I assume all 3 of them work for the same agency?) to get this done.

On his way to another. Will be two more than Willy. If you think Willy, at that age, was as good, you've been huffing gas.
Except Willy is further ahead on his way to 100 this year also, so it won't be two. You're doubling down on a dumb comment in the first place.

They're talking about before 26, Nylander is 2 years of development ahead of Pettersson so it makes more sense to compare D+7's vs D+7 and D+9

Yes the Leaf. Obviously I wasn't talking about the Canucks. There isn't much of a track record to speak of and the bubble was an anomaly.

One thing that I hate is everybody shouting to the rooftops that this is a steal of a deal.

It's not. It's slightly cheaper than market value.

It has potential to become a steal. It's very similar to the Stutzle signing where it is appropriate for now, but if they reach max potential then it can save a few million in the long run.

Hughes is a steal, Demko is a steal. Miller is a steal.

This is about right given his consistencies over the past 2 seasons and his lack of line driving on a consistent basis that we've seen from him in previous seasons. If he can get back to carrying a line solo then we can laugh but for right now it's appropriate. Hell, half of the Canucks fan base has been bitching about how he's gonna demand 12 million the past month or so. So if he's right under that 12 million how is it a steal? Term, I guess?

It's a good contract but it has the potential to be a steal and it also has the potential to be a slight overpayment as well. More than likely a good contract considering the 8 years but let's stop pretending it's as if he signed for 10 million aav here.

Should probably wait until round one to make that statement.

Realistically paying your stars isn’t what f***s a team over - it’s how you pay the surrounding pieces. Even if Drai does come in at that 12.5-13 million AAV range, as long as it’s on a long term deal, the Oilers should be happy.
It actually is what f***s 95% of teams over.

It's why teams that have their stars signed on nice deals end up in the playoffs and typically going far at some point in that 10 years in a row.

Tampa Bay was an anomaly because everybody wanted to play and make more money in Tampa with the team also having no pressure and a great location.

Should probably wait until round one to make that statement.

Personally I'm not worried.
