Gives me, and many Canucks fans, the kind of joy you hope to get from following sports.

Those who don't understand cap percentage and that the cap is going up are only calling this 'fair' or 'not great'.

But this deal will look hilariously favourable within a couple of years in a completely undeniable way.

It's already amazing, but it will soon be undeniable even to nature's D students.

In practical terms, there is zero difference. EP was as good as a UFA, because if he had taken Vancouver to arbitration, that's a 1 year deal with a NMC. Vancouver couldn't have moved him. So in practice, they had to get a deal/trade done before the arbitration deadline.

There are a lot of posts I like in this thread, but rather than liking them all individually I thought I'd comment instead.

I argue a lot around here. Sometimes it gets a little heated and I admit I sometimes come across pretty strong. Because of this and because of the way the Canucks fan base clashes with a couple other fan bses, it can leave a person thinking opposing fans are jerks — at least some of them.

This thread is kind of changing my mind about that. The overwhelming congratulations in this thread from fans of other teams seem 100% genuine and frankly, that touches my heart a little. Thanks, y'all. Maybe you can teach an old dog a new trick every now and then.

the cba ends after the 25-26 season but not sure why he wouldn't want bonuses that year. unless it was the teams decision so they dont have to pay out if there is a work stoppage.

miller's contract has the same thing. hughes didn't get any bonuses.

I am not sure I agree with that. A player having the leverage of saying "I am going to shop my services to 31 other teams" is not the same as one year of arbitration and NMC.

I like the signing and the amount, but I think Vancouver was able to get him a bit lower because they weren't buying 8 years of UFA, only seven.

And a large part of the fanbase will grind him through it and dwell on the money. At some point in the next few years, they will even bump this thread and say "everyone thought this was a good deal, har har".

But on balance , though his strengths and weaknesses , this was the deal we needed.

Always a pro and con with doing bridge or term out of elc.

Pro with bridge is that you ge the player only for their prime which would typically be around 33. But you pay the higher cap hits for their years 7-11 vs doing max term.

Pro with max term if both sides can agree is that you get a good cap number for the years you hope to contend. But when that deals ends at 29/30 have to decide if it makes sense to still continue. Or be prepared to have 3/4 down years once the player passes age 33/34.

The NHL site says Pettersson has 17 POGP, if they didn't count it as playoffs, they'd say 13.
