Confirmed Signing with Link: [VAN] F Elias Pettersson signs extension with Canucks (8 years, $11.6M AAV)

Fair deal. I know people were speculating above 12 because of Nylander, but I think that’s more an indictment of Leafs terrible negotiations. This makes him the 5th highest paid player in the league.

If they buyout or manage to trade Mikheyev—they have the budget to re-sign their key free agents (Hronek, Blueger, Joshua) *and* acquire + extend another impact player this deadline.

Makes me wonder about a Guentzel trade.
Would probably require Lekkerimaki, which they don't want to do for good reason. I think they're done taking huge swings this year

Hows that working out
I mean truthfully quite well, he's been one of the best players in the league in 2024 - 17 points in his last 11 games and elite two way play. He's still not Pettersson... This is the first year in a very long time that Vancouver has been good though so let's not throw too many stones here

Even as a Leafs fan, you can’t really use Leafs salaries as benchmarks, we pay our stars higher than everyone basically always. Agents lick their lips when negotiating with the Leafs.

I’m gonna guess 8x$12.

am absolutely gutted as a Leafs fan. No wonder we have no cap room ever to do anything productive or ice a competitive roster.

quite frankly I am so pissed right now we deserve to be made fun off for putting up with Shanahan's bullshit

How’s that working out for the team though? Where are they in the standings?

11.6 is good value. About 500K discount.

if 4 to 5 players leave about 500K that is about 2 million extra available and a potential for a 4 million at 50% retention for a playoff push if/when needed

thats how a team can give themselves an edge and bolster their line up for more competitive advantage in pursuit of a cup.

I mean, they're rebuilding? Team is doing basically exactly what was expected of them this season but Suzuki has taken a huge step

I guess Pettersson sucked last year too because the Canucks were 11th last in the league?
