I'm terrified of what Detroit is going to do now. They are in a Playoff race and just extended Larkin so they have long term clarity on their cap situation and now they have extra assets.

Inflated stats and we bite because our genius management is incapable of due diligence

d

Best case scenario is the Canucks extend him this summer while his price is reasonable and he turns out to be a good partner for Q. Hughes.

he's gonna ask for like 6m+ given his current production

the canucks have to hope he has a down year next season and THEN extend him and hope he recovers

this is just a bewildering acquisition

marino is a much better player and went for significantly less. even if hronek is an effective player for vancouver this was a terrible trade
Yep. If they wanted to make this "retool now" trade for a top-four RHD, Marino was cheaper and by far the better fit.

Allvin's added a Tyson Barrie clone. Who won't be getting PP time here. Fantastic job.

I don’t care if he is a good defender, he is not a star defender, This draft is stupidly deep, and we traded Two picks, its f***ed.

I am so incredibly pissed, somebody calm me down.

Listen to “relaxing bedtime chimes”

Works for me usually but not always and it won’t help right away but it may work to relax you a bit

Unmentioned side effect of this trade: if Hronek is actually any good, the Canucks are probably going to rise in the standings from their current 6th-last. They could have easily tanked for top-5 lottery odds and a decent chance at Bedard if they had sold for futures instead of selling futures for win-now players.

We've locked ourselves in for another 10 year retool as it's inevitable that this team will be good enough to make the playoffs but get beat in round 1 or 2.

Repeat the process in 3-5 years when we have to trade Hughes/Petey/Demko after we realize we just aren't good enough.

I guess we aren't seeing another Finals appearance for 15+ years.

AQUILINI: it's January, let's be honest, should we rebuild?

MANAGEMENT: yes.

AQUILINI: Trade Horvat.

DEADLINE: trade Schenn

AQUILINI: good job. Rebuild done.

Seriously do you think Benning could've done a worse job? I actually think Benning probably retains Horvat.

hronek will find a way to put up points here and will look like a competent top 4 defender (although his defensive lapses will annoy many) but that's not really enough value for the isles pick AND a high 2nd in a great draft

wrong player. wrong time. wrong price

We were talking best case, not likely case.

If this was a protected 2024 pick or we didn't give up both the 1st and 2nd, I could sort of stomach this. Hronek is a good player after all. I still wouldn't like the trade as I want us to genuinely rebuild not this half ass shit but it'd have been... fine.

But to throw away a middle range first in the deepest draft we've had in a decade and then gift Detroit a high second on top of that is just downright maddening. If our prospect pool isn't the worst in the league it's pretty damn close yet we just keep punting out draft picks year after year.

If he’s a legit rhd top four, I’m ok with it. f*** the rebuild, not into writing another four years to see a decent team.
Yeah, you probably had a similar opinion following the Gudbranson trade. Most your opinions seem to age really badly for some reason

The next (obvious) move is trying to move Myers and/or Boeser/Garland.

And these trades will cost MORE assets to move out. I'm anticipating losing another 2nd/3rd+ and someone like Hoglander for us to make some cap space and be able to spend it on someone like Gavrikov in free agency.

Idiotic.

Ugh.

Also, they're definitely not moving Miller. (No matter how much of a long shot it may have been. ) this is a "we're going to try to make the playoffs next year" move.
I hope the team fails massively again next year. The ownership deserves it.

This is on par with the OEL trade in terms of not knowing where they're at as a team and wanting to compete right away.

I think I might barf if I listen to Allvin's presser.

Really seems like they are making a big bet on their pro scouting chops.

Absolutely.

Hronek has put up a lot of ES points over the last two seasons (top-25 in the NHL for D, on a bad offensive team) and they appear to be betting that this is a player in the Werenski/Sergachev sort of range as an impact offensive D who can hold up well enough defensively to be a quality #2 defender in this league.

If he can be that, this will probably be a good deal.

If he's just a good offensive #4 who was overplayed in Detroit, this will be a poor trade.
