I didn't catch a ton of the WJC but what Finland games I did watch, Pieniniemi looked good and always seemed to be involved in the play. Would be cool if he panned out to become a serviceable NHLer.
Same, I watched a lot of the WJC and you can see that the Finland coaching staff used in tons in every single situation. That's a great sign of trust! Over a ppg as a D in Kingston this year, has to be doing something good!

Article indicated that pens stole him on the Petts deal. 8 points since the deal. RH shot winger who has the skill and frame to be a quality forward in a couple years. Another couple nice high picks in the draft this year and next with getting a surprise or two Pens can get back on track.

OR, we can fire the coach and get back on track sooner.

But yeah, Fernstrom is encouraging. I wonder how his grinding game is, though?

Howe brings an attitude and grit more than pure skill. He has skill but his game is more in your face making his presence known. Not a commodity the Pens have in big supply.

If Howe can be a Michael BunTing type 3rd liner in the NHL without having to rely on PP time in order to score at all (like Bunting, even alongside a Hall of Fame center), that's a win.

Just published a translated interview with Mikhail Ilyin (2023 5th round), where he discuss his progress in the current season, having Malkin as an idol and being drafted by the Penguins, and his eventual move to North America.

Have a good read!

What’s good is that his coach never forces them. “He lets us play,” he said firmly. “He tells us, ‘Do what you do, I’ll take responsibility.’ You’re not immediately benched for a mistake. Instead, they just point out what to do differently next shift.”
Oh boy kid, wait until you get to the Mike Sullivan run Penguins...

Honestly though, this kid is doing everything we would want a prospect to be doing. Developing nicely and steadily getting more responsibility while continuing to produce. He's on a very nice path.

If we think back to NA and what Spezza has told the WBS kids - "we don't want to call you up until you're here to stay" - it might do Ilyin a bit of good to do one more year in the KHL next year. My worry about guys like Hallander and Ilyin is - I, myself, would have a hard time playing in WBS or potentially Wheeling while watching guys like Nieto, Imama, and Acciari in the NHL. Why would I want to do that when I could be a top line player in the league at home?

I think when they bring him over, there needs to be a legitimate plan to get him up to the NHL in-season, IF he doesn't start the year in the NHL. He'd likely need an adjustment period in the AHL which is fine and expected but if the plan is only to "meh, we'll see how he does and go from there", then leave him in the KHL where he's getting top line minutes.

Pretty exciting to have some overseas prospects doing well - Hallander, Fernstrom, Ilyin.

I have no problem with them saying that this year. It is if that continues for next year.

Koivunen, Broz, McG, Hayes and Pickering are all in their first full years. The only guys who I think really deserved more of a chance this year are Pono, and Poulin.

Next year though they have to change that philosophy especially if Hallander, Fernstrom, Ilyin come over. They will not have enough room in WBS and the young guys need to start seeing other young players get a chance to have some success.

That is why I'm so against bringing on additional roster players this TDL. You have Poulin, Pono, and Hallander who probably need legit NHL time. All the while, you have guys like Acciari, Hayes, Lizotte, Heinen, etc taking up NHL slots. Unless Dubas can do some major house cleaning....

Gotta pump the brake a little on Fern. This is only his first year in the SHL with extended time, so he's good for at least another year there, if not 2, depending on how next year goes. Hallander is obviously a no-brainer, and if he's here he's going to be with the big club. Ilyin already has the K experience, but becoming more dominant there wouldn't hurt. If his contract wasn't up at the end of the year I'd say staying there for at least another year is the obvious move, but with nothing in place yet for next year, it's a bit more interesting.

Hallander scored a nice wrap around yesterday, 2 pts off the scoring leader in the SHL

Stupid question, but do we still own his rights? And if so, why aren't we trying harder to get him back over here?

Edit. Ok just searched it, he is an RFA at the end of this season. Seems like he had a great progression this year
