As far as the Canucks are concerned they won this. They got a bad, but serviceable depth D and got rid of someone who will be on LTIR all season ruining the teams cap plans for a late 4th when the consensus was that it would take a 1st or 2nd to move him.

When has LTIRetired players ever taken a 1st or 2nd to move? A mid/late pick has been the going rate since... well forever.

Indeed. It's hard to even call it a "win-win" because nobody is really "winning" here. It's just a swap of things that two teams didn't want...that fit each others' situations and cap needs better.

I'd take Poolman over Brannstrom easily. That Avs blue line is vastly improved from last year even after getting rid of Walker. If Kylington plays like a legit top 4 dman this year, then the Avs will be tough to beat. I doubt you find a better trio of puck moving D on a single team than Makar, Girard, Kylington.

...because the Canucks can now accrue cap space over the season, while the Avs were planning to utilize LTIR all year, giving them 2-3 million more space at the deadline.. It's a win-win, but there's people out there acting like a 4th is backbreaking and Allvin was made to be the fool.

I mean...in the sense that it's hard to call a junk swap any kind of real "win". It's really just more like a "no lose" situation. Both teams are now postured marginally better for what they want to do. But trading poop for a turd is hard to declare a "win" for either side. Even if neither side loses.

People assume that 19 year old player from the USHL who is four years away from an AHL contract is more important than having the ability to build cap space this year. (I know that's just worst case, but my actual point stands)

I was surprised that there was not a team that gives importance to advanced metrics that grabbed him to have him in their lineup when the Avs acquired so much defensive depth. Sure, his size will always be a challenge but Brannstrom deserves to play in the NHL.

Something that people don't really know but he has only been outscored by 99 D-men at ES in the last 2 seasons combined (so only 3 per team on average despite 3rd pairing minutes). He's not really great on the PP because his shot doesn't create enough offense but he's efficient at ES and pushes the play forward with quick retrievals and excellent transition. He's quite similar to what Grzelcyk was for example, just maybe not as fast.

In the last 2 seasons combined, he was also 57th in xGF/60 and 36th in xGA/60, 29th in xGF% overall which is seriously the best you can hope/ask from your 3rd pairing D-man. This is what surprises me, I know Ottawa let him go (he a stupid Dorion 2.0 QO) which killed his worth to other teams but no one else noticed these advanced stats?

The thing is there is so much talent available today that teams are going to prioritize D-men with size unless you're an exceptional like Hughes or Hutson.

Kylington playing like a legit top 4 dman would mean the Avs have a sick AHL squad.

But he sure won't ever do that at the NHL level ever again.

He may have had a year or two with the Flames where he looked like an NHL player. But those days are long gone. He'll struggle to be a middle pairing dman in Sweden in two years from now.
