They’re loading up in really important areas, if you can’t address the most important thing. Which is the hardest thing to acquire. A Dman who can carry play 20+ minutes a night.

If the cost is right, than it’s a win. Getting someone to take Kuzmenko in any deal, is a good thing.

So why did they trade Horvat then, just to acquire another center?

Aside from the Swedish GM getting a Swedish player angle.

Assuming Lindholm has even relatively kept up the same level of play he did when he was a Selke nominee, he fits much more better on this team. Horvat's defense was always overrated. He won't be the offensive player Horvat is, but it is what it is.

Just a question for Vancouver fans, is this a sign they're going all in with the murky situation of Petterson's RFA or a sign that they're trying to show him that they're able to compete with him on the roster or a bit of both?

I think they've already showed him this is a winning situation (which was the concern coming into the year)

Now I think its that alot of their key secondary players (Blueger, Joshua, DeSmith, Zadorov, Cole, Myers, exc.) are on expiring deals, so they won't be able to bring them all back. With the way things have clicked this year it could be their best chance to win.

Don’t love it for Calgary but they seem determined to try and make the most of the “window” they are stuck in with the long-term deals they handed out.

Don’t get me wrong, Kuz and Hoglander (if that’s what it is) may score some goals for the Flames. But mostly I think this deal keeps them at best in the middle of the league.

I would have gone pure futures (1st plus a blue chip recent first round type asset) but I get it I guess.

This is a freaking home run for Vancouver. They get to move useless salary (under Tocchet) and buy low on a guy who is at worst an elite 2C. Keep EP and JTM together. Still have the best bottom six in the NHL, Quinn and Co in defense and an elite goalie.

A little bit of everything. Ultimately I think this isn't necessarily about Pettersson. They're doing this because of their cap situation; they have a window to win which I believe is defined by the contract that Hughes is currently on (because after that he'll likely be a $15M player). And there is definitely a window this season specifically before a bunch of guys get raises, whether in Vancouver or somewhere else, like Pettersson, Hronek, Joshua, Blueger etc.

Ok that's what I figured too, thanks for the kind response!

Calgary fans, I know Lindholm was up for a Selke nomination 2 years back but how is his defense now?
Solid. He's not Backlund level, but only Danault really is. He's an above average defensive player. He doesn't deserve Selke votes, but lots of guys get them who don't. He'd be similar defensively to EP.
