NBA ratings have been terrible for a very long time. This is something I have no interest in.

So the plan is to play a similar defensive strategy with a different offensive plan. It was only summer league and they lost but the game was far more entertaining to watch stylistically.

Nurse ran a dribble penetration system (to maximize 3s) and inherited Lowry and FVV who could effectively run it. It's incredibly hard on the PG because they get hit s lot, so Lowry primarily played SG his last year in half court.

Fred hasn't been able to effectively play it for 2 years, so we started asking Pascal to run the system. Realistically, the system requires a new PG every 3-5 years.

We drafted Flynn (who can't play the systen), Banton (who would be able to if he could improve his shot) and Barnes (who can't play it).

When the system broke down in the first half, you'd see a lot of "make something happen", which led to chucking.

Ironically, we used something closer to this year's offensive schema in the 2nd half, but kept slipping back into Nurse's system when it mattered.

Nurse is now in Philly with Harden, who was a top 5 PG last year, but who can't play Nurse's system on offense or defense (think the problems that Kyrie brings where he plays awesome but his team is worse off as a whole).

I watched the Summer League highlights and Dick and Nowell both looked very promising.

It's the basketball equivalent of the FA Cup in English football. We'll see if this type of format will gain any traction in North America.

I don't understand what the point of the tournament is. Its not like the players need more money. Just give the players on the winning team a million dollars each for the all star game.

Except is it only nba teams? If so then it’s not like the FA cup. the beauty of the FA cup is that it’s open to every professional team in England. It would be cool if it involved some teams from some other global leagues. If it’s only NBA teams then its Pretty pointless.

Yes, but in North America, the only other professional league is the G League which consists of feeder clubs affiliated with the NBA clubs. It wouldn't make sense to include them.

I do agree that the tournament in pointless.

For the Raptors, the most notable absence all weekend has been Pascal Siakam, the Raptors All-Star forward who has been featured in trade rumours for the past few weeks.

No one wants to go on the record as to why Siakam has stayed away, but it seems reasonable to guess that since the Raptors have yet to discuss a contract extension, and instead Siakam has been prominently featured in trade talks, he isn’t all that keen to be on-site in Vegas. After all, it would be awkward cheering on Raptors' prospects only to learn he’s being dealt the next day, or whatever.

Siakam is coming off a season in which he averaged 24.2 points, 7.8 rebounds and 5.8 assists, and the 29-year-old Siakam is eligible for as much as $192 million over four years on a deal that would kick in for the 2024-25 season.

As for if, when or where Siakam might be traded?

Per league sources, the Raptors are still listening, trying to gauge the market value for their leading scorer and leading returning – in theory – playmaker. Atlanta remains a possibility and Indiana has also reached out.

The Raptors don’t intend to drag the process out for weeks or months, but they don’t seem ready to close the door on a Siakam trade just yet. Meanwhile, they still remain committed to avoiding a total rebuild — in other words, nothing they do or don’t do with Siakam will make them any more inclined to trade O.G. Anunoby, the 25-year-old all-NBA defender who also has one year left on his deal. Teams are welcome to call about Anunoby, but don’t expect a call back — that's the message.

But even if the Raptors decide not to trade Siakam – and the seven-year veteran has made it clear his preference is to stay in Toronto – it will be interesting to see how they can foster the kind of team-first, family-type environment the Raptors are hoping to create under new head coach Darko Rajakovic, who has been upfront about making third-year forward Scottie Barnes more of the focal point on offence.

He's comfortable in Toronto and being traded would expose his game. I don't think he could adapt in a good way.

I think he'd fit in well in Atlanta tbh. He wouldn't be the main ball handler and he is one of the better players at drawing people in which would leave some of the deadly shooters Atlanta has there open consistently. Then when they don't help inside Siakim and Capella would dominate around the rim. It's why if Atlanta wants him then I wouldn't let them have him for nothing because that teams in our division and won't be an easy team to beat.

Potentially pushing Toronto to continue considering trading the All-Star forward is Indiana’s reported interest in him. Stein highlights how the Pacers would be intrigued by the prospect of pairing Tyrese Haliburton alongside Siakam.

"Siakam is a two-time All-Star and would represent a premier trade target for Indiana to potentially place beside face of the franchise Tyrese Haliburton, who recently received a max contract extension that could be worth up to $260 million," Stein wrote.

Another reported reason Toronto could deal the 29-year-old is to open up the court for Scottie Barnes and OG Anunoby.
Both players have yet to hit their prime and occupy similar spots on the floor as Siakam, creating an ostensible logjam when it comes to touches for the three of them.

"My read is that the Raptors, in the wake of Fred VanVleet's free agent departure to Houston, are eager to give even more runway to Scottie Barnes and O.G. Anunoby to expand their offensive purview under new coach Darko Rajaković," Stein added. "Barnes and Anunoby are 21 and 25; VanVleet and Siakam are both 29."

Stein concluded his piece by emphasizing that while a trade isn’t imminent as of yet, the odds of the Raptors extending Siakam rather than moving him are unlikely.

"After a weekend here, it is difficult not to come away thinking, at the very least, that a trade is the far more likely outcome for Siakam than a contract extension from the Raptors at this juncture."

Is Raptors' Siakam more likely to be traded than other superstars around the NBA?

Marc Stein joins Evanka Osmak to discuss the trade rumours surrounding Pascal Siakam, which teams are in the lead for the Raptors' superstar, and what Toronto would be looking for in return for their franchise player.

Well, this might make for an interesting storyline while Willy and Auston negotiate slowly.

What does Indiana have to peddle? Atlanta? Didn’t both teams just draft players linked to the Raptors?

You’d have to think a young point guard who can create and attack would be a focus, along with a F to replace some of Siakim’s minutes.

Seems a bit reactive rather than proactive. But it’s a story.

I don't know if Dejounte has signed his extension or not. If he has, then one of Capela, Hunter, or Bogdanovic has to be included for salary balast (Dejounte's extension blocked him from being traded for 6 months). Bufkin cannot be traded until Aug 1.

Money wise, one of the those guys, Patty Mills, plus Bufkin would work (picks don't count for salary purposes at this point because they are not slotted until after the lottery).

Atlanta is basically in a 18-20+6+4+whatever to get close

Indiana, OTOH, could trade a 20+ (like Atlanta), or they could trade a bunch of 5-10s (Atlanta doesn't really have this salary structure). Money-wise, they could package basically any 4 or 5 guys under Turner on their payroll and get close. For example, Theis, McConnell, Smith, Walker, and Mathurin works money-wise. OTOH, Hield is likely their backup SG now, so Hield, Walker, Smith also works.

Based on what we are doing, it seems like the plan right now is to have Scottie play PG and run a system that actually supports him. In a world where Pascal is gone, we either play Scottie - Trent - OG - (acquisition) - Poetl or, in the scenario where a guy like Patty Mills is the balast, we play one of the two PG with Scottie at SG, Trent at SF, OG at PF, and Poetl at C (Note that the coach would clearly prefer the first scenario and if Pascal is not traded, it will be the first lineup with Pascal in it).
