I don't know if Dejounte has signed his extension or not. If he has, then one of Capela, Hunter, or Bogdanovic has to be included for salary balast (Dejounte's extension blocked him from being traded for 6 months). Bufkin cannot be traded until Aug 1.

Money wise, one of the those guys, Patty Mills, plus Bufkin would work (picks don't count for salary purposes at this point because they are not slotted until after the lottery).

Atlanta is basically in a 18-20+6+4+whatever to get close

Indiana, OTOH, could trade a 20+ (like Atlanta), or they could trade a bunch of 5-10s (Atlanta doesn't really have this salary structure). Money-wise, they could package basically any 4 or 5 guys under Turner on their payroll and get close. For example, Theis, McConnell, Smith, Walker, and Mathurin works money-wise. OTOH, Hield is likely their backup SG now, so Hield, Walker, Smith also works.
Murray just signed his 4 yr 120m extension this week, one interesting tidbit I keep seeing is a 3 way between ATL-TOR-DAL, where Hawks get Pascal + Mcgee Mavs get Capela and Raps get Hunter +++ (Prospects and draft capital) I don't see Hawks moving AJG, OO, or JJ; however if willing to wait I can see Bufkin going. Hawks are in love with the Mouhamed Gayue draft pick instead.

It’s not Dame Lillard to Miami or bust; it’s not getting James Harden out of Philly purgatory. It’s Siakam and his future with the Raptors that is causing a bit of a stir.

The thing is, at the moment, there is far more smoke than fire.

After five days of running into team officials of every level in Las Vegas, one thing is apparent: There really is no “latest” to the Siakam situation that has percolating for weeks. The Raptors will move him if they get a good offer. They haven’t.

Siakam has not been to the Summer League games yet but neither has Gary Trent Jr. It’s not as if all veterans show up to hold hands around a campfire and sing songs with their new, younger teammates. They stop by for a couple of days, say hello, work out, maybe catch a game or have dinner and hang out.

Teams would love to have every one of importance there every day. That never happens.

Scottie Barnes was in and out, so was Malachi Flynn. O.G. Anunoby hung around for a good long while, as did Chris Boucher and Christian Koloko. Jalen McDaniels and Dennis Schröder stopped by. So did Jakob Poeltl.

Siakam hadn’t been there when I left. Neither had Trent.

A big deal? No. A small deal? Probably not. But neither have contracts after next year so there’s no telling how they feel.

But that’s minutia, according to a few people who chatted last weekend.

The Siakam saga has really not changed. He’d like to not be traded; the team is willing to move him in the right circumstances.

If part of the reason they’re even considering a move is because the NBA’s extra punitive luxury tax — a hard cap that’s not called a hard cap — is scary with the future contracts of Anunoby and Barnes, there is little chance they would take on big, long-term money.

If part of the reason for a move is to address a roster imbalance — they’re right back at six viable starters and too many non-shooting forwards — the specific need of backcourt ball-handling and depth would limit the teams they could talk to.

What many executives and scouts of other teams are most perplexed about is what the Raptors are going to do and when. They wonder if team president Masai Ujiri and GM Bobby Webster have a big master plan they want to put into place, and there’s some mocking of the Raptors because it’s not apparent.

Which, frankly, is what the Raptors want. They do things at their own pace and keep their thoughts to themselves.

Sure, it leads to all kinds of speculation and there’s frustration among rival executives. It’s hard to imagine Ujiri and Webster caring about what others think or want.

The prevailing attitude from a variety of sources is this: Siakam is in play but the Raptors are in no rush. Nor do they feel they must make a deal.

There was a lot of chuckling when I brought up reporting out of Toronto that the Raptors were exploring deals for Pascal Siakam. “Tell me one I haven’t heard.” “Oh, I love this song!” “Fool me twice, Shame on Masai (Ujiri).” These were among the comments. Nevertheless, the Hawks, Thunder, and Sixers (in a multi-team trade) were among those mentioned as possible landing spots if Toronto does actually move the All-NBA forward.

I guess there’s a chance to stir up a market with multiple teams in play for Siakam.
They’re out their first for next year? Is it lottery protected?
I mean, with Siakam and Poetl the whole year, enthusiasm with a new coach and new offence for more guys, it seems a plenty deep team that’s pretty likely to make the playoffs.

Make the playoff in a sense. No chance of winning. Ball is different than Hockey as you need a top 10 player that's healthy to win. We took the chance on Kawai and it panned out but make no mistake without an equal level player we weren't winning.

Pascal needs moved on from.

I totally agree with you on that. Masai is so stubborn. Siakam was never the guy.

Toronto’s 2024 first-round pick is protected No. 1-6 in 2024, 2025, and 2026, and the Raptors sent unprotected 2023 and 2025 second-round picks as part of the trade to acquire Poeltl from the Spurs, HoopsHype has learned.

Yeah, I get it, and I agree on Pascal. Just that the outcome of trading lotto picks sucks even with protection.
Treadmill is no fun.
The emergence of Scottie would be, tho.

Honest question: can Barnes develop into that guy like a Kawhi Leonard? What I mean is, can he be the top dog on a championship team? Or is he more a #2?

I think he may be more a number 2 than Pascal was to a chip team. It's a good start for sure on a rebuild and could attract a top player on merit, Not diminishing Kyle, he played over his head with raw determination and desire, that what got it done. KLOW is a legend in Toronto.

Tyler Herro trade interest in Damian Lillard trade talks

The Brooklyn Nets were among the early teams linked to Tyler Herro in multi-team trade talks between the Portland Trail Blazers and Miami Heat surrounding Damian Lillard, per SNY. Recently, the Utah Jazz were linked to Herro, per Yahoo Sports.

The Toronto Raptors can also be added to the list of teams that have expressed exploratory interest in acquiring Herro as part of multi-team trade talks between the Blazers and Heat involving Lillard, league sources told HoopsHype.

Over the past two seasons in Miami, Herro has won a Sixth Man of the Year award and started all 67 games played last season. He’s been consistent in either role, averaging 20.4 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 4.1 assists on 44.3 percent shooting overall, 38.7 percent from downtown, and almost automatic at the foul line at 89.8 percent the past two seasons.

............

In other Raptors news, Toronto is also considering adding another point guard in free agency, league sources told HoopsHype.

dalano_banton.jpg

LAS VEGAS—Former Raptors guard Dalano Banton had nothing but appreciation for the hometown team that drafted him as he embarks on a new chapter with the Boston Celtics.

Less than two weeks after leaving the Raptors and signing a two-year contract with Boston, Banton was on the UNLV campus training with the Celtics and reflecting on his time in Toronto.

“Shout out to the front office, I feel like that organization alone made me the person that I am, made me the kid from Rexdale,” Banton told the Star. “I owe them a lot. I’m very thankful for them, very thankful for Masai (Ujiri). I made that really clear to them and other people on the staff when I made the choice to go somewhere else.”

Banton didn’t go into specifics about why he left, but some fans were shocked that Toronto didn’t extend a qualifying offer in late June. That made Banton an unrestricted free agent.

In his end-of-season news conference after Toronto was eliminated from playoff contention, Ujiri emphasized that he wished some of the younger guys on the roster — Banton included — had received more of an opportunity.

Even when the Raptors introduced new head coach Darko Rajakovic on June 13, Banton was present for the news conference at Maple Leaf Square as Rajakovic mentioned him by name while discussing next season’s plans.

“He just wanted an opportunity to grow and just be himself,” former Raptors teammate and current Celtics forward Justin Champagnie said. “He took what was on the table for him and he wanted to make the best out of it.”

Champagnie and Banton joined the Raptors organization as rookies during the 2021-22 season. They became close teammates, spending time with the G League Raptors 905.

They reunited at Summer League and Banton made his first appearance in a Boston uniform during the Celtics’ third game in Vegas, after being sidelined with an injured finger.

“I think Dalano’s got a chance to be a good player. He’s got a great feel for the game. He’s obviously gotta get a little bit stronger, he’s gotta get his shot a little bit better, but those are things that can happen over time,” said Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens.

“He’s a young guy. His ball-handling, his passing and his feel — pretty unique for a guy that size.”

Banton returns to Massachusetts after playing at the MacDuffie School during his high school years, when he started to grow into an NBA player at six-foot-nine.

Cameron Payne just got dealt for a second. He would have been a great pick up for the Raptors to utilize in a platoon role with Dennis. Can push pace. Can shoot the three. Would have had to move Flynn too to make salaries match, but it sucks seeing point guards continuing to move/sign that would be great fits for us while Masai and Webster seem content with our near league worst quality and depth at the position.

We still have guys like Jaylen Nowell, George Hill, Austin Rivers, Kemba Walker, Ish Smith, etc out there on the FA market. Nowell really the only interesting name of that group IMO and not sure he’d sign for the remaining cap we have left.

Remember that the cap that Toronto has left isn't necessarily important.

For example, let's say that Houston no longer wants to pay Kevin Porter Jr 15M to be their 2nd PG (and potentially block Amen Thompson as well). They could move Porter to Toronto for Thad Young and Otto Porter.

Now that Houston is over the cap, changing their salary structure slightly might actually be good for them (where signing Fred was part of getting there and the option removed any possibility of a sign and trade).

Was not a fan of letting Banton go, thought of our youth he had the most upsize. Still think it's a long off season but going into next season with the roster as is.. does not make much sense. Front court is relatively solid with OG, Pascal, Portland, Boucher.. the back court got worse with losing Fred and really lacks guys who create their own offense which is exactly what you need in today's NBA. I like Trent but he is more of a shooter to me.

I think you're underrating Shroeder a bit. He's basically a cheaper version of VanVleet who is also much quicker and possibly better off the ball which is something I think we value a lot now since we got Scottie and Siakam who will be running the point at times throughout the game. Even if we trade Siakam I'm sure we'll get a guard in that package. Losing Banton does suck and I also thought he could thrive in a new system and from what Darko says it sounds like that system could've been our new one tbh, but at the same time Flynn has shown he can play and he is someone who can create his own offence so maybe we see him more. Not only do I think our starting 5 is more complete but I also think our bench is a threat now and I'd say that was what held our offence back last year was that Nurse didn't know how to develop players so he didn't use the bench because of it pretty much. I think that's what got me most excited about next season is seeing our bench get some consistent minutes and helping us provide some offence while the starters get some rest.

I wasn't the biggest Fred fan but I think fans soured on him because of the system around him more and how it influenced his play. They had basically zero half court offense, that's on the system put in place for the team. He was a 20 and 7 player for the last 3 or 4 years , Dennis is a 14 and 4 guy. That's a decent drop, not saying it can't work out but I think Fred will be missed more than people imagine. Dennis does bring a nice speed element but this isn't a team that plays with a ton if pace, maybe new coach and system the direction shifts. Lots of unanswered questions, the team could look drastically different by training camp.
