So just going off the future cap implications, Raptors probably don’t make this deal unless they feel comfortable re-signing Poeltl, which means we now have 3 guys now who need new deals and likely big raises on contracts. Even without Poeltl this was going to be a tax team if they re-signed everybody… another move has to be in the works.

Trading for Poeltl then turning around and trading OG would be so f***ing stupid.

Trade FVV and Trent. Keep OG.
OG wants out, there's too much smoke for there to not be fire. You have to trade him now.
Sending a 1st for Poetl only makes sense if you know a 1st++ is coming back via another deal

In a perfect world, this is the beginining of a re-tool.

The beauty of moving FVV and GTJ (and possibly OG) is that you can get a deeper (albeit with less top end) roster and picks

The more I think about it, I think GTJ and Fred are gone. Masai doesn’t want to deal with 3 UFA’s in the summer. OG although has tons of value right now he’s still young and has I believe has another year on his deal

Unless Masai knows OG isn’t going to resign in a year and a half, I wanna keep him. This whole big wings defense experiment never really had a chance to succeed before because of a lack of a rim protector. I saw before that the Raptors defensive rating swing with Koloko was something like a 10-15 point difference.

Surprised at the lack of protection. My guess is it signals Masai will be aggressive in the offseason because basically we gotta bottom out to keep that pick or be competitive so its a low pick.

I'd argue this trade and the price it took is definitely a reflection of the failure of the big wing defebse strategy. Raptors at least have a good big now which hasnt been the case since 2020.

Those are some very weak protections. Even if you want to have faith in Masai, this team has done nothing to suggest it's going to be competitive in the near term, and I'm not sure what he can do to turn the boat around this quickly. A not insignificant chance you're handing a lottery pick to San Antonio.

Raptors are in a very tough spot. The NBA has quickly become a guard driven league, and the Raptors don't have guards.

I think Poetl - Siakam - Barnes can be a formidable starting front-court next year, but they need to find a way to acquire some dynamic guards. Best bet is probably using OG. Maybe something to Portland around Afernee Simons, or Shaeden Sharpe if you're willing to develop him. Or you wait for the inevitable Trae Young wants out of Atlanta situation (although then you're probably looking at Barnes going back...)

Not great. Seems like they'll be stuck in the mud. A 40-45 win team.

Canada's own Washington Wizards.

The trade protection at least helps if we bottom out the next few years, it gives some flexibility. Poeltl has to be resigned for this to make any sense regardless... as this is not the year to simply make a play-in game and have him walk for free. The next move (im assuming it happens before 3pm) is the interesting one... At least one player has to go Id imagine. Not enough starting spots and with some players already wanting larger roles... Trent and FVV make most sense as no guarantee they will be back. OG has another year plus option to figure things out if you dont get market value, you hold off and wait for the off season or draft when cap flexibility is a little looser.

I have mixed feelings about the trade. I need to see what happens next in order to make sense of it.

Welcome back Poeltl.

Well thats not great protection on the picks. It signals we plan to be competitive but Masai has work to do to make that happen.

Hard to figure out what the long term plan is at this point. Like very hard.

Potential players , Bucks are in win now with Giannis, Middleton and Holiday. Small price for a big bench piece.
Yup. 2nd round picks are pretty much meh and win mode is win mode.
