Hmm so are the Raps gunning for this year? I am a bit confused on their plan? And why woulds they trade any remaining players if the plan is to win now? Basketball is mind boggling. The Nets went from a playoff team to probably a lottery team in a week.

Nothing really stopping them from selling off Trent Jr. and FVV for the right deal. If you trade both, you've traded two guards but I imagine they'd put Barnes in one of those spots and they will get a starting and bench guard back in those trades.

Poeltl, Barnes, Siakam, Anunoby, and new PG is your starting 5.

Seems like the Raps want to compete as soon as next year so if they feel confident that Poeltl is coming back next year (clearly they do if they are making this trade), then they are probably fine with giving up the 2024 1st and some 2nd round picks which probably don't mean too much to them. Got out of Birch's contract at the same time.

Clearly Ujiri is not happy tanking, and really short of trading a ton of guys he probably does not want to move if he is going to be competitive next year (Siakam, Anunoby, etc.), he is probably not going to improve his chances in that regard all too much.

Don’t even have to look to just next year. Not that I’m a fan of this route but the Raptors are currently in a play in spot.

Won 6 of 9 and only 1 GB of 9th and 1.5 GB of 8th. A team in front of them just lost KD. There are only 3 clear cut teams in the East. 26 games left, anything can happen in terms of positioning. You can get as high as the 6th seed and you are playing Philly again.

I think it makes us better for next season. Got a few guards in our pick range this year that are sound defensively and can shoot the 3 and pretty good playmakers apparently.

Hes a free agent I believe so hes going to be wanting a significant raise. Not sure if we aquired his bird rights or not for contract purposes.

Pretty happy about this.

Rebuilding isn't like the NHL. It could take years and simply not even work. All I wanted them to do was pick a direction. And they did. It's a smart move if they weren't getting fair value in a trade for Siakam, OG, FVV etc.

We add a very 7'1 defensive C, our teams biggest weakness since Gasol left.

Barnes, OG, Siakam, Poetl is your core for 2-3 more years. Need a shooter. But that's 4/5 starters I'm very happy with long term. Then you have FVV/Trent to round it out as your shooting options then you figure that piece out in the offseason, but I imagine one or both of FVV/Trent will be gone in free agency.

Rebuilding in any sport is not a guarantee. This team just disappoints again. Although I suppose there is still time left.

What the f*** is wrong with this team? Just keep sending out those firsts y’all. Outstanding. /s

It's a protected 1st, if it was unprotected this reaction makes sense, but assuming he signs and it sounds like he will this is an odd reaction

Trading for Poeltl then turning around and trading OG would be so f***ing stupid.

Trade FVV and Trent. Keep OG.
Poeltl is 10 protected but only this yr or next yr. . Is he worth that.

If trading for this, it must mean they are signing FVV and Trent and keeping OG

Doesn't that strap us money wise and basically keep them mediocre? The only way forward is to sign Poeltl and OG. Trade FVV and Trent then use the draft capital to either draft some actual scorers or trade for some.

I'll wait and see where things stand after 3pm, but an odd choice to send draft capital out for a FA. They'll have his bird rights, and the protections matter, but it's putting a fair amount of faith in next year's team without being sure what shape it will take.

Agreed, it’s a rather odd move, I guess they think this team is better than it has shown. Hopefully Poetl is ready to play 42 minutes a night.

If Poetl is our only move, then it's certainly a disappointing trade deadline.

In saying that, we've needed a C for ~3 years since Serge/Gasol left, he's only 27 years old, the acquisition price was pretty reasonable, and he already knows the organization and is friends with Siakam. So it does make sense as an acquisition, but only if we're making some other moves.

Look at the history of the NBA - 51/76 champions were #1 seeds, and only two weren't top 3 seeds. i.e. the NBA is NOT a league where you can squeak into the playoffs, get into the play-in, etc, and hope to do some damage. You frankly have virtually a 0% chance of winning even as a middle of the pack #4-6 seed.

So with that context, the way I look at it is if we just add Poetl and then try to keep the band together, we will not win this year, and we will have virtually no reasonable path to become a contender in the next ~2-3 years. We'll tread water in mediocrity, and accomplish nothing as our core players age, we lose guys to free agency, etc.

The alternative is an aggressive retool. We're clearly not blowing it up entirely if we just added Poetl, but there is potential down the path of trading ~2 of OG, FVV, and Gary. For example, let's say we trade OG + FVV. The return on those two should be quite good, with multiple 1st round picks, and some young players coming back in the trades. We could go into next season with Siakam, Scottie, Poetl, Gary, Precious, Otto Porter Jr, some new young players from the OG/FVV trade, and more picks to use as trade chips. It's certainly not guaranteed to lead to building a contender, but at least there's a chance if we go in that direction. If we just hold onto our guys, I really don't see any realistic chance of it happening. So we'll see what the rest of the day brings, but hoping to see us sell a couple of those guys so we can retool for next year.

That puts us into luxury tax territory with a group not realistically expected to contend. I would be surprised if that's what we did... gotta think there are other moves coming, and that it'll be more of a retool (i.e. Poetl in, 1 or more of FVV, Gary, and/or OG out).

I like the deal a lot better than the rumor of Trent and a 1st going the other way. We don’t even know if the pick will convey in 2024. Maybe it turns into 2 seconds.

OG is next, I got a feeling Portland could be involved. Maybe Sharpe and picks. Memphis must be feeling the heat now to do something.

I would look at unloading FVV to the Clippers now for Mann ++ and Trent to the highest bidder. Only way I'm moving O.G is for a huge overpayment which would be Sharpe + multiple 1st round picks which I don't think Portland does.

Well, this puts the pressure on the front office to get a star in the next few years. Siakam and Poetl are both in their primes now and the team isn't a championship contender as-is. So they have to do it before they decline in their early 30's.

Unload OG for a young player and 2-3 firsts, and in a couple of years when Barnes is a bit more matured and ready you can package those picks in a big trade. This is how the Raptors are going to have to get star players. No one is coming here as a free agent. I’d move VV, OG has peaked imo. You sell high get cap space and picks and in a few years use the cap space for another star

In a perfect world, we find a way to move FVV and GTJ and bring back role pieces that fit our needs in the deals.

OG is harder to trade, but the potential return would be greater.

How would a OG trade be harder? Only reason would be if the team acquiring him gets worried about the chances of re-signing him.

OG is harder, because his role is harder to replace.

We can realistically replace FVV and GTJ with a point guard and shooter respectively that a trade partner needs to move to match salaries.

An OG trade isn't bringing back anything close to an OG (OG is the type of player that every team is after and most aren't giving up D and 3 guys)
