it would have made alot more sense if we had made a second trade to get a serviceble backup guard, i just dont think we improved nearly enough in this eastern conference(where the top teams got much better today imo) to warrent giving up our FRP in more of a rebuilding year. if we lose fred for any amt of time we are cooked lol.
I honestly think as long as we make the playoffs and the pick is in the 20s the difference in value between picks is not that high. The flexibility of the non-guaranteed contract for 2nd rounders is nice and the actual pick will only be ~10-15 picks apart.

Agree we could have used another guard though.

what happened to masai and "play-in for what"? lol
i just dont see the point in getting a player in the 1 position we really didnt need(even though he can at least pass a bit) we needed a 5 that can either space the floor or at least get some rim protection from, or a guard that can come off the bench and actually score. thad, while a great fit defensively and from a "wants to win" standpoint, doesnt really solve the actually needs we had on the roster imo. and while i get its not a huge deal moving down in the draft, where we are currently as a team i just dont understand trading 15 min a game expirings to move down in the draft. the big boys in the east got better, i dont think we really did get much better. if one of our 5 starters goes down we have 0 depth scoring wise.

Schroder and Bledsoe both seem on their way to the buyout market

2 guards that Nurse should trust defensively and can be a very good back pg. Hard to see them choosing us over the contenders, even with guaranteed back up minutes and a starters spot if Vanvleet or Trent go down

Ehh I mean Thad was by all accounts a great 6th man in Chicago last year, it hasn't worked out in San Antonio but once he is acclimated he should be our best bench player and fit right into the scheme with his strengths defensively.

I think in the big picture it will be rather inconsequential tbh, I could go either way. Hopefully it works for the best.

ye if we get chicago thad its a better deal, i just dont see why we did this without getting a guard or a center. im not writing it off quite yet, but without making other moves i dont get it personally. if we lose FVV for any amount of time we could realistically drop down to the 15th draft position quite easily and miss out on somebody in the draft.

we will see.

as it stands..no. but the amount nurse plays his starters, its quite possible somebody gets injured and we lose some ground. im worried about FVV and his knee issue that keeps cropping up.

Same, i dont like or understand it at all.

Yeah a bit confused by that move tbh.

Boucher
Birch
Achiuwa
Young

are all the same type of players. Would've been cool to add a ball handler or someone who can shoot off the bench.

In regards to the pick, i guess at face value it seems a bit jarring but we're probably looking at dropping about 10-12 spots. Still don't think i would've made that move, don't think it was worth it.

If Thad can produce what he did last season off the bench, would be pretty impactful. He seems to have playmaking ability/smarts and better defensively than the other backups on this roster.

Maybe Raps will look at buyout pool too. Pretty sure they have decent space now under the luxury tax mark.

if it was combined with another move i would have understood it more, but ye..on its own its an odd fit in most respects.

Its puzzling but every time i doubt Masai, he comes through. So maybe this is another example. If we win a round, i see this as a win though a few months of Young isnt worth a 1st.

ye he will get the benefit of the doubt, but they are gambling big time these 5 starters can continue to play these types of minutes injury free, because 15 mins of thad per game isnt moving the needle much even though hes a useful aquisition lol

They free up enough money to fill the final roster spot without exceeding the luxury tax so I expect they'll sign someone in light of waiving Eubanks. I agree they could use a combo guard but also wouldn't mind seeing DJ Wilson again. He looked decent in a short stretch and dropped 34 with 17 boards in the G league two days ago. Birch can't stay healthy so I wouldn't mind some insurance and just let Barnes or Siakam run more point with the bench.

Young adds an interesting element to this group. I think he'll pair well with Boucher as the bench forwards and one of Birch or Achiuwa at the 5.

VanVleet
Trent Jr
Anunoby
Siakam
Birch

Barnes
Siakam/Anunoby/Trent
Young
Boucher
Achiuwa

in a vacuum thad is a good pickup, but the trade on its own doesnt really make us much better imo.
also, i doubt the waiver market is going to provide much value for us tbh. dj wilson could be something, or not. banton looks like jordan in the g-league lol.

they could also just take the roster spot and convert justin champagnies contract.

so ye, dragic and our FRP for thad and a second, not a big fan as it stands.
Yeah, not a home run.
Effectively renting a 6th man for a playoff push for 10-15 draft slots.
The SRP has its merits over FRP, if it’s close enough. I do trust the teams scouting and drafting. Not a huge cost. Let’s hope the push is real and Thad helps.
Maybe Scottie plays more guard minutes?
I’ll assume Eubanks was a placeholder asset while they attempted to flip a big for a guard that didn’t end up materializing?

I’m always cautious to try and guess how Nurse will use people but theoretically he’s the best bench defender, probably their best screener and also able to make reads and pass out of the short roll. Better finisher than Birch or Achiuwa as well. Also think his length and strength could help cut a few of the offensive rebounds they give up every night.

Leadership and intangibles, too. I think he brings a tonne of value in practice every day for Scottie and Precious.

Wouldn’t be shocked if they re-sign him depending in how much he has left.

I hope you’re right about Barnes. Freeing him up to play more on the wing will be a huge plus.

Eubanks was just to make the money work. Dragic made too much more than Young to do it 1 for 1.

agreed on all fronts, but everyone coming off the bench is still a 4/5 lol, and its unrealistic to expect more than 15 mins(20 max) mins a game from thad. if this move was made with something else it would have made more sense.i still dont see it, but time will tell.
