Proposal: Useful Cap dump to Flames?

OK, I originally hoped the Flames could pick top 5 this year and draft that elusive franchise Center. That ain't happening, and I doubt top 10 is either. So we're gonna have to try for playoffs since we'll be handing Montreal our 1st.

Who's a useful depth player on your team that you'd like to trade to open up capspace? The thought is that the Flames could add a player to get them there, and gain a good pick in the process.

Looking for a hardworking, defensive, physical player that is just over priced. Preferrably with maybe only 1 more year on his contract. No albatross type offers please.

I doubt the Flames are interested in cap dumps with term, especially middling players with 4M+ cap hits. Maybe if that player comes with a sweetener, they certainly aren't paying anything to take that on.

hmmm Is he still useful? Dumba from a few years ago I'd be all over that
Dumba & 2nd for Hanley? I don't like the extra year on Dumba blocking Solo & Kuz though
Eh, Id rather a 2nd than either Solovyov or Kuznetsov if they can't beat out Dumba for a roster spot.

Hardworking, physical guy who's overpriced?

JR: "Bah gawd, King, that's Nic Deslauriers' music!"

I'd toss you the better of our and Carolina's 5ths (so, ours) this year.

Why not, they have cap room to burn and no major contracts on the horizon other than Andersson. With the cap going up significantly next season, now is the time to leverage it for additional draft capital/prospects.

If they're not going to move out veterans, then taking on bad money is the other way to do it.

I think they can't take on term up to 3 years pretty safely provided the AAV isn't too much (nothing over 5M, higher for shorter term) and the compensation is good. If they turn out to be useful, that's gravy.

Well sure if they are getting draft capital or propects, that's why I said "Maybe if that player comes with a sweetener, they certainly aren't paying anything to take that on."
I was replying to the post above mine proposing that they pay a 2nd rounder to take on 1.75 years of 4.5M cap hit, no thanks to that.

Dude it's not even December yet. We are getting the best goaltending in the league right now by quite a margin but can't score. If Wolf was even averaging a .920 we would have lost every single one of the last few games he's started.
And our December schedule looks very doable. By making a move now, the hope is we don't fall a point or 2 short by the end of the year.
As was pointed out above, taking on salary & compensation seems like the logical move.

I don't think you are seeing the forest for the trees. Calgary is a team of all depth players and no stars. Adding another teams castaway depth player is not going to improve the roster by any relevant amount. The Flames are being completely carried by excellent goaltending (and a bit of luck with things like Kaprizov getting hurt in the game right before they play us). Making a move now does nothing for us if our goaltending even normalizes slightly since the kind of players teams would be looking to give us are similar to caliber to Chicago taking on Beauvillier last year.

Ironic to say the “forest for the trees” line then say Calgary is a team with excellent goaltending and luck but nothing else. Since the calendar flipped to November, Calgary is 8th in CF%, 13th in xGF%, 7th in shots per game, and 5th in scoring chances per game. We have generally been a great hockey team lately.

Fans have this pipedream that the owners are going to weaponize the team's cap space. In reality what you're talking about is an owner paying millions of dollars out of their pocket for a pick. It doesn't happen as often as people think.

Two names that might be fits for different reasons.

Norris - available, would be cheap, 50/50 either a home run pick or a LTIR lock.

And the other, and I'm not trolling, is Monahan. Fits the same age as Kadri and Huberdeau, may no longer (unfortunately) be the right fit in Columbus due to reasons outside of anyone's control and may be looking for a change.

Norris fits but Monahan is playing lights out for Columbus.

Flames are a little tight at LD after Bahl, and maybe to get Miromanov off the 2nd pairing, Detroit could send Chiarot your way. I think he could pair well with Weegar. Weegar plays both sides but would be better fit at RD?

Chiarot is a UFA in 2026 so he's not on your books for too long either

Could work some picks and/or prospects into the mix as well

The point is this thread was for the flames to either acquire a young underachieving player with talent, like Lindholm was before he came to Calgary, or receive an asset back with an overpaid player. I really love that Money hands found his game again. Everyone in Calgary loved the guy and were a bit sore how it ended. Plus seeing him succeed after the gaudreau tragedy is a legit feel good story.

That being said a five year contract is just way too long for that kind of a deal... Unless Columbus is doing something crazy like including multiple firsts.
