Proposal: Useful Cap dump to Flames?

The premise of this thread is that the Flames aren't picking in the top-5 which I just can't understand.
On December 31st last year, the Coyotes were still quite firmly in the playoff spot and ended up picking at #6. Surely there is still plenty of time for the Flames' wheels to fall off, which everyone should reasonably expect to happen. Their leading scorer is a defenseman on 0.6 PPG pace. I don't understand what bringing in another roster player would do for them.
Surely you either sit tight and wait or even consider selling high on someone like Andersson.

That's not happening. Only was it does is if Montreal is throwing in firsts to move Anderson, which would be insanely stupid.
Too old to fit the flames' plans.
The funny thing to me is it might still be the Florida pick coming to you, but only because Calgary finished higher in the standings than the Panthers haha
Imagine after a few years of chatter on this topic, and the 2 picks end up both in the late 20's

Just shows how unpredictable standings can be year over year. Often teams suddenly improve just when they accept the need for a rebuild, move out core veterans and have a meritocracy among a bunch of younger players.
I mean the point isn't to spend assets to acquire someone, but get an asset for a bad contract so a team can free up cap space.
For instance, if the Islanders were willing to give up an asset to move Pageau and his contract. Something like the Walman to San Jose trade.
There are 3 kinds of trades that currently makes sense for the Flames, and any rebuilding team for that matter.
- Sell pending UFAs, of which the list is pretty barren (Kuzmenko, Vladar, Barrie, Hanley, Kirkland are the only UFAs other than Mantha who is done for the year)
- Acquiring players 25 and under. (Josh Norris for example)
- Acquiring a cap dump for an asset. (like Pageau)

I know your premise is looking for an overpaid player. Well, he’s not overpaid, but David Gustafsson is strong defensively and is caught in a numbers game in Winnipeg. He’s definitely good enough for the bottom six, but the emergence of Kupari has him on the outside looking in. He is mainly a centre, but also plays left wing.
Useful capdumps? Oxymoron IF they are useful they are not capdump
