No matter the circumstances, it's always a "must win" for the US against Canada. Everyone is gunning for Canada. It's always a "must win".

There's a massive difference between a "must win" game and a mathematical elimination game. They can lose a figurative must win game and still advance. Now that can't.

Only reason they beat Canada in regulation was they played like it was game 7 of the SCF while Canada played like a regular season game and Carey Price was rusty after not playing for 10 months.

Good luck vs Canada in Canada tomorrow vs a well oiled machine and a goalie back to his game.

Quick stood on his head. That's what it will take for the US to win.

Should the US find a way to win both games, let's hope it doesn't come down to a goal differential tie breaker. Right now the US needs 7 just to tie Europe and we all know how well team USA has been scoring.

Sucks for the American's that the North American team has robbed them of a bunch of amazing players. Doesn't really matter for Canada, this should be an easy win.

as if USA would have taken them anyway. Left a bunch of better guys home as is. Makes more sense to say "sucks that the American management has robbed themselves of a bunch of amazing players"

Team NA has been so much fun to watch but I can see this being a one and done situation primarily because the U.S. is far too weak to leave quality young guys off thier roster. Although I think team U.S. Was doomed with the way they built the team and coached it so I see it as more unfair for team NA going forward.

Canada could field a team NA, Canada A, and still have solid Canada B team.

Yeah that's true, they left off some guys they should have put in the tournament. Also Canada could absolutely have another team in this tournament that could compete pretty well.

Yeah, though it's possible that the US decided to go with Torts and truculence because they weren't able to have Eichel, Matthews, Gaudreau, etc. They wanted Eichel (and it sounds like at least one other player) but were told he couldn't play for them. They may have wanted others if they were available too. After they learned that none of the young players would be available, it's possible that they decided that a "talent" team wouldn't work against Team Canada (and possibly others) so it was better to go with grit, Torts, etc. We'll probably never know.

Team NA is so much fun to watch that I'm glad we got them this year in any event.

USA would never pick rookies like Matthews and Eichel. Doubt they would pick Gaudreau either since he would be too small and weak according to Torts.

My point was that they might not have picked Torts if they could have used the younger players. We'll probably never know.

all that being said about the death of the USA team, and yet, if they pull out a win tomorrow against Canada, and they are in the driver seat to get the first seed in pool A, and it will be Canada needing a win in the final game against Europe to stay alive. How each game means so much and is a main reason for why this tourney has been a pleasure to watch so far

some sites have USA as 29.5% chance of winning this game

Even with their disgusting roster choices, I dunno about that...

here we go

If you're implying that I'm making excuses, you're reading too much into what I said. The way the teams are set up obviously disadvantages Team USA and Team Canada. The timing of the tournament (with the seasons already underway in Europe) is a disadvantage for the European teams. But all the teams knew the rules when they agreed to participate.

I'm enjoying the tournament, not trying to make excuses or pick a fight. Saying that things might have been different with different rules or teams seems self-evident to me. Emphasis on might bc it's also possible that Team USA would have gone with Torts anyway. It's all speculation.

I read that the first tie breaker is the H2H winner between the two tied teams. Which means Europe is in and for US to make it, Canada would have to lose both games.

There's little chance of Canada losing to Europe even if they lose to US. So odds of Americans getting past the round robin is 1%.

....or did i get the tiebreaker incorrect.

Team Canada is a lot better than Team USA. But I still think that Canada will lose tomorrow.
Why? Because the NHL doesn't want Team USA out of the tournament because the World Cup will lose a lot of audience. So, NHL will order Canada to let the USA win tomorrow.
In the last games, Canada will beat Europe by a big score and USA will beat Czech Republic by a big score too. So, Canada and USA will qualify to the Semifinals like NHL wanted in the beginning.

Bit too tinfoil... I don't believe NHL stars go for match fixing.

Doesn't change the fact that US dropping out is a disaster for ratings, money, prestige and what not.

they might be underdogs, but it's not a stretch to see the Czechs beat Europe.

Many people were calling Europe the worst team in the tournament just a few short days ago. Hell, in the GDT for the 2nd pre-tournament game guys were calling them a good AHL team. That's a huge stretch obviously, but 2 and a half games later and suddenly they're too good for the Czechs to beat? Nope, the Czechs beating Europe is not even close to a stretch. It's extremely realistic even if it's not the favorured result

Agreed, people change their minds so quickly.

Also what? no way people said team Europe were a good AHL team?

Yes.

If USA wins tonight, we'll likely end up with a three way tie. USA, Europe and Canada with 4pts each. ROW is the first tiebreaker, then regulation wins. That means Europe, likely, is out.
