The fact that this tournament could be "rigged" to favour Canadians is beyond ridiculous.

It was put together by the NHL.

When was the last Stanley Cup won by a Canadian team?

How many Canadian teams made playoffs last season?

No. If Canada wins, all it will once again prove is that we have the deepest hockey talent pool in the world.

Proving once again that hockey is OUR SPORT.

The fact that its the fastest, coolest and best team sport in the world is irrelevant. :)

If the US loses to Canada their only hope is a 3 way tie breaker where they have the best goal diff. So let's hope Canada hammers them

They cold lose to Canada in OT and get an extra point there. So a three-way tiebreaker is not their only hope.

I hate to keep ragging on Backes, because it's nothing personal.

But I swear he might be one of the slowest players in this entire tournament. Chara might be slower, but he's the closest guy to 40 in this entire tournament. I don't even think Hossa looks quite as slow.

I find Team USA to be full of slow pokes. It was quite amusing to hear ''Team Europe is the oldest team in this tournament''. I don't think they are as slow as this bunch from Team USA.

And some of these posts non-hockey arguments about Canada vs USA are brutal and nonsensical. It's frickin hockey, guys. No reason to start a war over it.

I'd hope most Americans have accepted the fact that we aren't the strongest superpower when it comes to hockey.

It's debatable where USA ranks, but to suggest the program is a complete flop because they lost one game against a good opponent isn't reasonable.

Is this plausible?

Us (somehow) beats Canada and Czech
Europe beats Czech and ties with Canada

Europe and US to final round
That would be so funny...

This tournament is going to be rock bottom for American hockey. In the same way 2006 was for the Canadian program. If they have Gaudreau, Eichle, and Matthews in 4 years they'll be in good shape.

You know what would be nice? Having them now. :)

You said it yourself, this is a NHL tournament to 100%, so it is far from neutral. Which we saw against czech for example. It is sad that hockey is so controlled by NHL, that make the whole sport so corrupt, which tournaments like this are a good example of.

Canada results also goes up and down very much depending on how much controlled a tournament is by NHL. Just look at the 2 least NHL controlled olympics (1998 and 2006), canada didnt even take a medal there. Canada would probably overall still be the best team, but if canada wins tournament like this is just leave a bitter after taste because of the corruption.

I think that is exactly what will happen. Europe will fall for the pressure against czech, they will start playing more offensivly in that game and they do not have players for that and will lose, and canada is to good for them. So Torts was smart to not take out the goalie.

I don't think corrupt is the appropriate term. Greedy yes, corrupt, no.

Every professional sports association is greedy though, so that's a non issue.

Very true, but Torts will have to be gone at that point...why did they select him to be their coach anyway??

But truculence!

I agree.

As I said in another thread. Team USA didn't seem to understand that it's not a grueling four round best-of-seven Cup playoffs. You have to build the team that best fits the tournament.

Does the coach have to share the team nationality?

No, but it's not typical in hockey (at least the major countries) to have a coach from another country. In any event, there were plenty of directions USA Hockey could have gone in with American coaches and yet they settled on......Torts. The U.S. brass "owned" the choice and are now paying the price. As successful as this group of NHL execs are with their club teams they are woefully inadequate when it comes to the international game. For this tournament they seemed to believe they could amass a goon squad and curb stomp everyone-including Canada. International hockey is a skill game, and so that approach isn't working.

I would have loved to sit on the selection process for this team and listen to the rationalization for going in this direction.....

Great avatar by the way. One of my favorite movies. :yo:

How does one distinguish between NHL controlled or not.

And you know the NHL would LOVE the US to win, not Canada, if you think corruption or rigging is involved in favouring a particular team

I think you are just bitter period.

But Sochi was an NHL controlled Olympics? Interesting.

Some people just mad they can't beat Canada. I get it, when I was in elementary there was this kid who always beat me in dodgeball. Guy had a wicked throw, always beat me. Hated him.

Even if there was no under 24 team and those guys were available asides from maybe Gaudreau it's not likely any get taken. Just look at the current vets left off the roster.

That says more about Torts and the US brain trust than it does about whether they could play on Team USA.

USA asked for the right to select Eichel specifically and maybe more young guys, and was denied.

I decided I was cheering for Team North America the moment I saw Dubinsky and Abdelkader were named to this team.

Always fun to see your home country's team being coached by an attention ***** more interested in his next sound bite, than actually putting together a competent roster/gameplan/lines or really anything that a decent coach can do.

I didn't know Dean Lombardi was like that.
