NESN UPDATE - NESN’s Jack Edwards announces retirement

NESN in their infinite wisdom is so scared of repeating the backlash from them canning Don Orsillo in 2015, that they won't get rid of a guy who just can't do the job anymore and is absolutely painful to listen to at times. Even though Jack isn't nearly as beloved like Orsillo was on the Red Sox telecasts.
I disagree. Orsillo was canned when he was still very much an elite broadcaster, that's the difference. Jack is well loved though. Not sure if it's quite as much as Orsillo, but if not it's damn close IMO.

I get the feeling they want to let Jack finish out this year, and after the end of the playoffs, that'll be it. They'll announce his replacement in the late summer and have some sort of recognition night next year for him, unless he prefers to just announce it himself during the last broadcast like Dale did.

which is why the new guy is not the answer. he might actually be saying something, but it's Peanuts' parents to me. y'all that like him: are you all taking the same supplements?

I'm sorry if the desire that our PBP person is actually capable of doing PBP leads you to think other people are on "supplements". The reality is far less conspiratorial - We want professionalism from our professionals.

That would be perfect for Edwards now. He seems to struggle now with unplanned scenarios like interviews while the game is going on .Put him in a situation that matches where his skill set is at right now.
I don't think a between-periods gig would be playing to his strength. His strength has always been play-by-play. Even now he is OK at it, despite a few word stumbles and inappropriate chuckles. I don't think he is particularly insightful about hockey, and when he has time to interview somebody his verbal struggles show most acutely.

Listening to TC do play by play for the bean pot right now on NESN: he’s quite good, maybe Jack’s successor is not so far away?
Pleaase, no. TC is a fine baseball studio host, and a decent hockey one, enthusiastic, versatile, but he is almost intolerable doing hockey play-by-play. He's too busy blabbing away to describe the action closely, far inferior to even the deteriorated version of Jack Edwards. Almost any rank-and-file college-hockey play-by-play person would be far better. It would be a horrible misuse of Caron's skills to have him succeed Jack.

i bet nesn lets him ride out his contract however long that is. why fire him and have to pay his replacment too and deal with any potential backlash. tip toeing around the issue.

I am not aware of it being from anything, it's just what it felt like to me experiencing them replacing a talker with a droning tone. it's the wrong tool for the job.

It's been two years since anybody in their right mind could call Jack Edwards a "talker". You have to be the biggest blinded-to-reality Edwards fan in existence to not notice his struggle to form coherent words.

Can't believe I'm saying this but I'd take Jack over Caron. For some reason, I can't stand his voice. I guess I"m in the minority.

I had to turn off the volume last night.
Was he the guy calling the Beanpot final? I tuned in late and was listening in the other room. At first I thought it was Buccigross on the call, because they sound an awful lot alike.

If so, yeah I'm not a fan either. He's still better than Jack, but that ain't saying much.

it is noticeable, but not as much as the new guy is unnoticeable. Stiff Suitman is like a cacophony of brown notes -- I can't make any of it out, but it provokes a negative reaction from my humanity.

Jack Edwards is still serviceable, but accommodations should have been made by now. at least take away distracting things like voices in his earpiece. prop him up for a few more months, stripped-down-below-bare-bones media company. the cheapening of everything doesn't help. the way they abandon him is like elder abuse. he could be much better with a plan and a touch of effort from the whole crew.

Agree to disagree. The disservice being done is to allow a man who is struggling to keep struggling to do a job he obviously cannot do anymore out of silly nostalgia. The only thing sadder than someone who hangs on long after everybody around him knows their time is past are those who play along with them out of some selfish misconception of "respect".

I'm a pretty big college hockey fan and have listened to many Caron-called games. He gets very repetitive. For example, every tying goal is "...AND JUST LIKE THAT!". He wouldn't be a good listen during a full NHL season.

Reminds me of when Fred Cusick was reduced to covering AHL games towards the end. Once the old Garden closed he had trouble seeing the play from further away from the ice in the new press box. I think he still wanted to do the job but physically couldn't anymore.

I remember TC from his first go around with the Bruins. He wasn't bad but kind of got annoying going off on tangents now and then

Yep. He hung on too long. Rene hung on too long. Now Jack.
