NESN UPDATE - NESN’s Jack Edwards announces retirement

Don’t think we can expect emotion out of the gate with a new guy, he should be given some time to find his vibe.

Was typing the same thing just now.

How can a guy get emotionally attached to a team that he currently doesn't have a long term future with? He barely knows anybody at this point. If he was getting hyped calling the games right now it would seem fake/forced.

Give him a few years of the highs and lows and he would get there. Let him get to know the team and the city and then you would hear it.

I like Faust but i also like hearing Brickley's analysis during the game and he seemed a lot more distant with him.
Can’t be easy - he and Jack have worked together for so long. Brick can predict Jack’s unpredictability and knows when to chime in.

Can’t expect it to be perfectly orchestrated when the change is temporary and the announcer is likely nervous and playing it safe without time to build a rapport.

Very nice to have Faust for the Sens' game call. Is he the guy to replace Jack long term? Not convinced he's the best option, but I'd definitely have no problem if it were him. Solid, professional play-by-play, that's all I ask for, and that's what Faust does. I'm not against some flair and emotion and personality, those can all be beneficial if used correctly, but the basics are the most important thing.

I'm done with Edwards. Great for a long time, but if he wants to leave with any dignity, it needs to be this year. As it is, it's a relief when he's away.
Any change takes an adjustment, for me I thought it was nice change to hear the game being announced without all the overhyped BS that Jack throws out there sometimes with his annoying fake laugh. I remember when Jack started, I was on board wheree it served double purpose, got rid of that, pompous ass Arnold, and Jack was actually doing play by play, but over the years he thought he needed to be more of the show. So, I say this to Faust or anyone else that ends up doing the games, CALL the Games, ............I will admit I am old fart that was spoiled growing up with Cuisick and Wilson,.

Faust was better last night than he was in the last fill in. He can stay.

Jack was fun and crazy years ago, but its sad and painful to have the volume up and hope he can get out a thought that make any sense at this point.

Hate to say it but Brick needs to go as well. One would think the Bruins have 3 guys on the team listening to his commentary. His love for certain players is gross.

Wilson for me, what a voice. I swear I was at the games listening to him.

I love Jack (and his homerism), but the performance just isn't there anymore. When the goal call comes 3 seconds after the puck goes into the net it's really tough to watch.

I have been watching the road feed usually on ESPN+, but heard Faust last night on the call and overall really enjoyed it.

Goucher would be my #1 by far, but I'd be okay with Faust. His enthusiasm was more noticeable last night than his earlier calls. The Marchand winner was a solid call.

Did anyone feel that the lack of Edwards forced Brick into more of the homer go nuts role last night?
I noticed that and I think it kind of messed with Faust. I mean the penalty calls were egregious, but I don't think he was prepared for Brick's outright criticism of the refs.

I'm sure he can grow into the role and get better, but right now Faust is too neutral, too national. He needs to turn up the homer volume just a little bit. You don't need to write me an elaborate poem about the life of Art Ross live on the air and perform it like Andy Kaufman, but you need to sound like you're actually on our side.

Yeah that was mostly what I was referring to. It felt a bit like Brick felt he had to take over for Jack there

Like Jack a lot. My only complaint is his overuse of the phrase “catch and release”. Think I accidentally dialed the deplorable “mad fisherman”.

I think it brings Brick out of his shell a bit. For the last couple seasons, Brick seems to have taken a bit of a back seat on the broadcast. Probably having a hard time deciding when to jump in and talk because Jack is having trouble getting through a complete thought, and Brick doesn't want to interrupt the guy.

I feel for Jack. Brick as well. I hope Jack doesn't get down on himself for the way things have been going. Still a legend in my book.

Not many people liked Don Orsillo when he started calling Sox games. I remember the 'vanilla' and 'unexcited' criticism he got in Year 1. Give Faust some time and he will be fine. Like any partnership, it has to happen organically. Once he and Brick get more comfortable with each other, everything will be fine.

This should absolutely be Jack's last season. He can't keep up any more. Offer him another role within the B's or NESN and call it a day. I can't listen to him anymore. It's sad.

Just keep the mic away from him...........

It's a breath of fresh air to not hear pronunciation struggles and stale go to lines, "there the coin that won't get tossed, rolling home to you" for each icing. Wish Neil Young would sue him for not getting permission:D.
As far as Faust not showing emotion, it could be his style or it could be that he doesn't feel ownership in the job yet, until it's a done deal.

Faust has a bit of the put-on announcer voice, which hopefully with experience and when he gets comfortable he tones down to a more naturalistic voice, but I have to say his processing speed and identifying players and events are the ice is remarkable.

I still love Jack and want him to finish up here. If it were a three-man booth with Faust doing PBP, Brick giving hockey analysis, and Jack there to provide color like a less drunk and less racist Howard Cosell on MNF, I'd be okay with that.
