NESN UPDATE - NESN’s Jack Edwards announces retirement

Thursday night went well until the postgame when the fiber transmission line from TD Garden to Watertown failed.

The hardcore freelancers including myself are making a big statement on Saturday night - we are working on the 2 Canadian feeds ( English and French) and that will continue on Monday with the Winnipeg game.

We used to be the best RSN in the US for hockey - not anymore

What is the motivation for them to get better? People who are going to cut the cord are going to cut the cord. People who care enough about hockey and baseball will pay to watch it. It’s not as if there’s any alternative for those who live in market to watch the games elsewhere. I know a lot of people who have switched to YouTube TV, and just watch football and stream shows.

The suits simply do not care

"Some" in market people end up just watching illegal streams because the idea of paying a ridiculous amount of money in order to watch a substandard product with awful announcing isn't worth it to them. If there was a reasonably priced, good, in market option I'm sure they'd be more amenable to it.

Over the last 10 years, NESN has lost 500,000 subscribers due to cord-cutting. By 2023 that translates to $35,000,000 in lost revenue a year. NESN 360 makes back a fraction of that.

It certainly has affected the Red Sox more than the Bruins looking at payroll cuts.

NESN is in no danger of collapsing as of now but budgets have been slashed.

However, IF the 4 major cable companies in New England (Xfinity, Spectrum, Verizon, and Cox) all decide they don't want to pay NESN's monthly fee :help:

Well that’s what nesn ownership gets for being such stiffs. Should have allowed those handful of streaming services to have nesn and not just fubo tv. Lost a bunch of revenue and the ability for more people to see your team because they were asking too much money.

You can lose a lot of future fans when your products aren’t easily viewed across a wide range of platforms. More opportunity to be seen.

Also people have their thoughts on gambling, not going to touch that. However, if the games are actually viewable it will likely increase the odds people will bet on it and that will bring in more viewers too who aren’t even really fans.

the broadcast is actually listenable without jack tonight
With the "questionable" penalty calls I'm really glad there is a level headed announcer to deal with it, while also having Brick give his personal takes on it. This sounds like a very professional broadcast, as opposed to your homer buddy calling a game (which some people might like).

Fans are blinded by what Jack has become and wanting anyone else. Bruins can do better. Some emotion in a regional broadcast is not a bad thing in the entertainment business.

For the dull play by play, refer to the Sox or any baseball game essentially.

I'll take Jack over a robot in a suit every day.

Faust is a nice guy. But I need a guy with unbridled passion. He just doesn't have it.

Unless we got Goucher back. I'll keep Jack, worts and all.

NESN offering Goucher the role would be perfection. He is the best in the business.

Do what makes you happy, folks.

As for me, the only time I watch Bruins games on NESN these days, is when I can't get the opposition broadcast on NHL Center Ice (like tonight). Its gotten THAT bad. Between the picture quality, the transmission issues, and the incoherent play by play, I'm done. I think its actually kinda sad, to be honest. In my opinion, the Bruins broadcast is the equivalent of the Arizona Coyotes playing in a college auditorium, and I think this franchise deserves better.

Faust isn't perfect, but at least its solid, professional and a step in the right direction.

Faust is growing on me, but prime Jack is my favorite commentator of all time. Probably beats Don Orsillo at this point back when I liked baseball in my single-digit years.
It's sad to see him lose the capability because the passion is still there 100%. You can tell he's frustrated with himself when he trips over his words.

When his broadcasting days are over, I hope they find him a job in the studio. I think he'd be phenomenal speaking from the heart in 2-3 shorter bursts a night vs. trying to follow the action live for 60+ minutes.

Yeah, sadly his PBP has gone down the skids BUT his passion and homerism (which I love) are always there. He needs to call it a day and take another gig at NESN but IMO Faust isn't the guy that I would enjoy listening to. I truly dislike corporate speak, and the non fan, even keel attitude that Faust displays.
Faust reminds me of the professional salesman who one day works selling Volkswagens one day, Ford's the next day and then when that dries up he's selling KIA's and telling everyone that they're the best car on the road. Whichever one he's selling is the best. No loyalty, no true opinion, just a gig.
I would like to see NESN have various people doing the PBP next year and having some sort of vote for whoever we fanatics enjoy listening to the most.
Either way, no matter what Jack says, IMO his days are over. Time catches up to us all and that was true for Fred Cusick back in '95 and it's true for Edwards now. That doesn't mean that Faust should get the job simply by default.

Very nice to have Faust for the Sens' game call. Is he the guy to replace Jack long term? Not convinced he's the best option, but I'd definitely have no problem if it were him. Solid, professional play-by-play, that's all I ask for, and that's what Faust does. I'm not against some flair and emotion and personality, those can all be beneficial if used correctly, but the basics are the most important thing.

I'm done with Edwards. Great for a long time, but if he wants to leave with any dignity, it needs to be this year. As it is, it's a relief when he's away.

Said it before, and i'll say it again.

The amount of vitriol Jack causes is enough for me to root for jack until the B's move from Boston.

A homer for the local team that gets as passionate as the folks in the balconies. I'll take it

I like Faust but i also like hearing Brickley's analysis during the game and he seemed a lot more distant with him.
