NESN UPDATE - NESN’s Jack Edwards announces retirement

I love Jack Edwards and I remember bringing it up in this thread last year and others started noticing it as well. His speech/thoughts do not sync up for a fast paced environment like hockey PBP anymore. Not sure if its COVID brain fog causing it or what, but him working in-studio during COVID and transitioning back to travel has not been kind to him. He may be healthy in the sense of good health and wellbeing, but his abilities to call a game have greatly diminished, and his twitter post is a sense of denial. Andy Brickley knows it too. If you listen, Andy will correct him multiple times throughout a game. I just think that if hes in denial, then the only result this will lead into is a firing.

Yes what a switch from Fred to Dave

Brutal

I would take that if had to since I go to home games - Jack is just hard to listen to

Those ‘this day in history’ with Jack clearly shows he’s a shell of former self

Don’t tell us you are healthy Jack listening side by side
There was a recent game in OT where an opposing player (I forget) had a breakaway and from middle ice Jack started to say "XXX..has..the..game..on..his..stick..." and by the time he finished the sentence, the save was made, the puck was in the corner and being passed out again.
It genuinely hurts me inside to have to listen to someone struggle like that.

Yeah just saw that, he talking about doing years more. I love the guy and I don’t want him to be heartbroken.

Maybe they can do a 3 man booth with Faust as pbp
That is a kind thought from you, but only if they duct tape Jacks mouth.

I wonder if they go the route they did a little over a decade ago. Where they had Jack/Brick on road games and Dale/Brick on home games. Maybe they'll do Faust for road games and Jack just for home

Pretty sure it was longer ago than that- I remember the home/away splits in the late 90s? Dale and Kluze home, Jack and Brick away. Then you're right, it was Dale and Brick away after Kluze stepped away. I don't recall exactly when they went to Jack and Brick for all, do you?

Dale and Gord at home.

Shea and Brick away. (Then Jack)

NESN wanted Dale to take the full time gig, home and away, and he had just re-upped with EEI so he declined and they made Jack the full time guy.

Yeah, do you remember when that was that Jack and Brick started doing all the games?

Not a fan of Faust. He did a fine job this weekend however he comes off as vanilla to me.
It's hard to swoop in and work with new partners, a new producer, new crew *and* try to get a feel for a team you haven't been calling. I have done PXP at various levels and for a lot of sports (including minor league hockey), and no matter how much I prepare, it's never quite as comfortable when I'm trying to learn a new team on the fly, so I keep it somewhat basic. A broadcaster doesn't want to say the wrong thing on the air or come across sounding like a neophyte. I filled in on a couple of basketball games a few weeks ago and had that feeling and kept it really generic until I got a feel for each team's personnel. Even though I did a *ton* of research, I kept it a bit more basic than I do when I'm doing games for the 2-3 teams whose games I regularly call, where I know the players, I know their games, I know how they play and I have a wide frame of reference to pull from. Even as a team broadcaster, it takes a few games for me to really get a feel for "my" team in the season as I learn the new players and their personalities and what they can do.

Chemistry with your partner is also important - and it takes a while to build that, even with a pro like Brickley. You are trying to figure out when each has an opening to talk, how to set up the partner, et al, so you again tend to keep it simple while you're developing a feel for each other. After you've worked together for a while, you can almost finish each others' sentences. It takes a while to build that chemistry, though ... certainly more than two games in the middle of the season. I worked with a really, really good analyst in the minors a few years ago who now works in the NHL. We were a helluva team. I had a feel for what he wanted to talk about so I could put things on a tee for him, but that took several games of working together to build that level of chemistry.

So I'd not judge someone too much based on two games of fill-in work in the middle of the season. Faust is a technically sound broadcaster, but he has a really strong personality and feel for the game. He was really good with the Kings, and does a lot of national work, as well.

Correct. Jack was hired in 2005, Dale and he swapped home/away until the 2007-2008 season.

NESN didn't want to pay for two pairs of broadcasters anymore and from what's been reported Dale had the first option to be the PBP guy but he didn't want to give up his WEEI midday show so he walked and let Jack become the voice of the Bruins. Maybe there's more to it like not wanting to be away from family or he didn't travel well, I don't know.

Moral of the story, can you imagine an alternate universe where Dale is the PBP man for game 6 against Montreal in 2008 or Bergeron's goal in 2013? Just wouldn't be the same.

Bumping this.

I was at the game yesterday, but my cousin sent me screenshots of the production quality issues.

I read in the PGT that it was so bad that some fans turned the game off.

Where is the accountability?
Where is the quality control?

We’re a captive audience. It’s difficult enough to jump through the necessary hoops to watch the games for many.

And it costs a fortune.

In a world of infinite streaming platforms and binge watching shows on demand, sports are the last bastion of live entertainment.

Paging @Fenway.
How does this get fixed?

Love Jack Edwards/Andy Brickley combo. Jack may be somewhat over the top with his enthusiasm but he's a he's aBruins fan through and through. So glad Dale opted for his radio gig.

You obviously have not heard Jack lately. He can barely speak, and is way behind the play. He's a shell of what he used to be, and whether one likes his enthusiasm or not, he can't do the job anymore.

There’s a game on from 2009.

It’s Jack and Brick on Vs.

Sounds like it’s a YouTube video that’s been sped up
The difference is staggering. Makes the games now that much more depressing.

It's something different every broadcast. The sound cuts out, video freezes up every 10 seconds for long long stretches, or like yesterday we get the scrambled spice channel effect.

I was watching on Sportsnet Go and they actually switched to the Jersey broadcast for about 10 minutes.

I slept over my grandmother’s one Friday night.

My dad came over and turned the TV on first thing the next morning.

“I have NO IDEA how it ended up on that channel.”

Sounds like G-Ma had one of those pancake scrambler boxes!

the trick was to always switch it back to ESPN, then to MTV. When the TV gets turned on again it's just on MTV. If anyone hits the recall/last button, it goes to ESPN.

I quote this movie, close to daily. Any time I see anybody sweaty I ask them if they were watching cops. It is in my nature. I cannot suppress the Stepbrothers quotes

I DIDNT WANT SALMON! I SAID IT FOUR TIMES!
I wasn’t fired from my job a PetSmart, I was laid off.

But you wouldn’t know the difference.
