NESN UPDATE - NESN’s Jack Edwards announces retirement

ESPN has been using Monaco for the NHL and he is fine.

If NESN wants Monaco for the Sox they have to pull the trigger now as he appears to be the #1 choice for the White Sox job.
Do it, I enjoyed his fill ins last year.

But O’Brien is a still a youngin he’s probably sticking around right?

@Mike in Houston - Welcome

Alex Faust is NESN's preferred replacement with Mike Monaco close behind. The Joker is Dave Goucher as the Vegas TV situation is in flux. The RSN that VGK used for 6 years closed down and they are now using an OTA (over-the-air) network.
I watch a lot of games over the course of the year. To me, Dave Goucher and John Forslund are the top two local PXPs in the league (Forslund did show interest in the Bruins' job at one point in his career - I believe when Fred hung it up - and there was some snag that prevented it from happening).

Whenever there is a change in the booth, they'd be wise to at least check on Goucher given the issues with the VGK RSN situation (and given he's a New Englander and how beloved he is among Bruins fans), but he seems to be very happy in Vegas.

Faust is *really* good. I caught him on a lot of Kings games. Took over for a legend in Bob Miller and then got a really raw deal in Los Angeles when they decided to simulcast their radio/TV broadcasts and went with Nick Nickson (who is an institution in LA and is also very good). Met him a couple of years back through a mutual friend and was really impressed by him personally. I've enjoyed his work with the B's. It's a different voice and a different style (then again, Jack's style is *very* unique).

Jack is a guy I'd love to sit and chat with. He loves the Bruins, but also understands TV is entertainment and melds those two. His preparation is legendary. Fundamentally, when he was in his prime, he called a tremendous game. As a younger broadcaster, I learned a lot by listening to him and owe a lot to him.

I love Jack, I really do. But the last two games have been refreshing and have showed me how much Jack’s fastball has diminished. The thought of him doing “years” of Bruins hockey seems hard to fathom.
I was thinking the opposite- these last two have felt like dry wheat toast for breakfast. Jack may have slowed a bit but some nights he's the most entertaining part of the game. Sure could have used his spark during these snooze fests.

Don't know how many years he's got in him but that's kind of true for everyone.

Beautifully stated.

Dude is cooked. Just like all of us we hit a spot and it is time to move on. Right now the Bruins are in a tough spot. Team is playing to its talent level ( not a good level but they are who they are) and it’s play by play guy has no fastball and tries to make up for it by being the color guy instead while doing play by play. Between the two it is making the games hard to watch. Jack has been great but now it is time to move on ( end of year)

This is starting to remind me way too much of the Jake DeBrusk thread.

Critiquing Jack’s performance behind the mic or commenting that he seems to be unwell…and should consider retiring (or NESN should have a chat with him) is not akin to disliking him as a person. Nor do I feel it is out of bounds in any way. This is the voice of the team. He is quite literally paid to speak and run PbP for viewing/listening fans.

When people get older and their health declines, the reality is that others do sometimes need to step in. People are resistant to admitting it is “time”, and often it being “time”, is best not only for others but the person themselves. If Jack is truly declining in a verbal or mental capacity, and it continues, yet he remains steadfastly committed to his job…is it really right he remains on the air…for himself? Being hardened and refusing to hang ‘em up is to be expected with plenty of people. But for the respect of the subject, that can’t be the extent of the conversation.

I don't mind saying I love Jack, and have ever since he was doing the road games with Brick while Dale and Kluze were doing the home ones it is sad to see him decline. These past two games with Faust felt weird, but I have to say he is a great PBP guy for the Bruins as sounded like he and Brick started to develop some synergy. If Faust is the guy going forward post-Jack, I like it and he will grow into the role in terms of chemistry and comfort level.

Phase Jack out and have a ceremony late in the year for his final game. Let him call half the home games.

I’m sick of Brinkley 100% of the time on color and wish we could get someone else for road games.

I’ve never been a fan of Jack, but I never doubted his love for the B’s or the fact that he’s a good person.

I think the real mistake was letting him come back this year.

While there wasn’t any guarantee that he’d slip this badly, it had to be at least a consideration that it would.

Now, they’re in the uncomfortable situation where NESN/Bruins need to let him continue at such as cringeworthy level or they need to replace him/significantly reduce his role in season.

Neither is better than if they worked it out in the off season.

Even if they told everyone in August, that Faust was the new PBP guy, but that Jack would be doing a select 10-15 home games, it would have been better than this.

I don't know Jack as a person and do not judge him on anything but his on the job performance, which is and has been terrible for 2 or 3 years(the slurring and mispronouncing is getting worse). It was refreshing to hear a play by play announcer just do play by play without trying to be the (not) funny sideman. Alex setup question for Brick to answer and only occasionally added a comment in between action from personal recollection. In spite of the awful B's performance the broadcast was a breath of fresh air.
Even my woman, who just laughs every time I scream for Jack to "shut the @#$% up", notice the difference in what was just more professional approach.

Not a fan of Faust. He did a fine job this weekend however he comes off as vanilla to me.

This might come with time and comfort- knowing he's the guy, developing chemistry with Brick and the production crew, creating an identity as a Bruins announcer etcc. For now, he was just filling in and it was important that he do a solid, professional job. Personality will come- he was good in L.A.

Love Jack, glad he's healthy. But he does not have years left in him as the PxP guy. It sucks, but being quick and articulate is kinda a big part of his job, and he's been neither of those things going back to last season.

I love Jack and his true Bruins passion.

I am biased, I know this because Emerick stayed way too long, got players names wrong and just repeated his favourite phrases. It drove me crazy so I know what a lot of people are saying, I just give Jack more leeway and am willing to forgive his struggles to keep him a while longer. It makes no difference what I think anyway, NESN is in control.

Still a far better call of a game than Jack and his prewritten bullshit rants. Even though I feel that Faust is very plain jane, I was able to listen and enjoy instead of muting it like I do with Jack. You throw in his obvious struggles doing the play by play the last 3 seasons, and it's not even close. Give me faust all day every day. Shit, literally anyone would be a step up

Faust just sounded so National-broadcasty to me.

If National-broadcasrty means you get more than 10 seconds of play-by-play from the PbP guy, before he breaks out his off on a tangent pre-written shtick, then I'll take National-broadcasty. The fact it lets Brickley actually get a word in for color is a bonus on top of that.
We're viewing it from different angles here. Yes you are correct, Faust calls the game as is. When I watch the Bruins or hockey games in general I don't want a robot telling me exactly what's happening, so I don't mind listening to Jack's 'shtick' when he goes off a tangent.

I've got no issues with people who like Jack. I get it, he's a silly sideshow that some people like. Me, I like professionalism, not canned buffoonery.
