NESN UPDATE - NESN’s Jack Edwards announces retirement

Jack Edwards having a transition is not brutal to you watching grown men play a game.

You want to keep a discussion going about someones else’s demise because it inconveniences you. Go right ahead. I am not telling you what to do.
I don’t think I’ve said anything out of line.

Never been a big fan. Way to much of a homer, and I found myself watching the away broadcast the majority of the times. The only times I'd switch back is when the opponents feed were total homerism as well.
Same here. I don't know why NESN thinks we all want homers calling games. You can be honest and unbiased while still being a fan of the team. The "homerism" usually comes off as juvenile and tacky anyways.

It's time. He is slurring words occasionally, the tangents are getting farther off-topic, and he is struggling in interviews and non-pbp duties. The question is where can we find another talented homer to replace him? I kind of like Faust, but he isn't that guy.

Ranger fan here. You guys should really try and lock up Faust before we do. He's filling in on the radio when Kenny Albert and Don La Greca are otherwise committed. And he's excellent! Most of us think that when our TV guy, Sam Rosen (40th season), finally retires, Albert will get the job. That leaves a hole in the radio booth.

Regarding Jack. Has it been this steep drop off or has this been a slower decline? I have watched highlights of NYR/BOS from this season and boy it is bad. I mean he already mispronounced Zibanejad from day one but he called Kreider "Crowder" and had a lot of trouble with Gustafson the other night.

@Mike in Houston - Welcome

Sam Rosen still sounds good at 76. Back in 1994, there were suits at MSG that wanted Marv Albert to call the SCF on local TV in NYC and Marv made it clear he would do radio on WFAN but not boot Sam from his gig. Sam was the last local announcer on TV to call up a Cup winner.

Rick Jeanneret in Buffalo had difficulty in his final years but he was in his mid-70s and they managed his schedule and it worked.

Jack and I go back to working at a TV station in Manchester, NH that in the 70s was an embarrassment. One day he had to fill in for 'Uncle Gus' and I wish the tape existed but it was hysterical.

Jack's next game will be on December 30th at home and in Detroit for New Year's Eve - the game in Buffalo is on TNT.

Alex Faust is NESN's preferred replacement with Mike Monaco close behind. The Joker is Dave Goucher as the Vegas TV situation is in flux. The RSN that VGK used for 6 years closed down and they are now using an OTA (over-the-air) network.

TV is a funny business - CBS kicked Walter Cronkite off the air in 1981 when he turned 65. NBC kicked Johnny Carson to the curb at 66 in 1992.

Sam makes his share of mistakes and has slowed down his PXP but he's certainly doing better than Jack and is 10 years older. A segment of our fanbase wish that he and Joe Micheletti would stop talking up the opponents so much and be a little more Ranger-centric.

It's sad to see Jack slip this much. I know he isn't very well liked as a broadcaster outside of Boston. He would frequently complain about national TV taking games away from him even though he used to be a national guy for ESPN before NESN.

OMG bring back Goucher and Shane too

In my opinion it's time to hang up the microphone. For the first time ever, I've found myself switching to the opposition feed from time to time.

He's been good, sometimes great. He's had a lot of blunders to. I'd prefer a bit less Homer calls and a little more honesty in what he's saying, but not a big deal really.

Generally I've enjoyed his calls until the last couple years though. He's now going way off the rails. No need to say what's been said a thousand times here.

Massive Jack Edwards fan, but he’s really unable to do his job at this point. Speaking, and the ability to speak is his job.

I feel bad as no one is as passionate as he is, and this team means a lot to him. It’s also hard to imagine a pbp announcer putting in the prep and efforts that Jack does.

If I have to settle for Mikey Monaco calling Bruins games instead of taking Dave O’Briens job I can live with that

For those who don’t watch baseball he’s really good. Have no idea how he is at hockey but I’d imagine there isn’t drop off

Jacks a legend, I hate to see this happen with him. He’s my generations voice of the Bruins. I have a lot of great memories tied to his calls.

Monaco in for O’Brien
Faust in for Jack

Boom NESN PBP dynasty in the making.

Love Jack and to me the 2011 cup run would not have been the same without him. He was a homer and a true fan of the game and the team.

is he a bit weird? sure
does he go off the rails sometimes? sure.

But at the end of the day he just seems like a really nice guy and someone i would love to buy a drink for and talk hockey.

he is part of the Bruins for me and even if he is off his game it doesn't bother me all that much. I have been watching hockey so long i don't need the play by play guy to tell me what's going on, its pretty easy to follow.

hope he is healthy and goes out on his on terms with a great prepared speech before his last game. Everyone gets older and will reach a time they need to hang it up and enjoy the rest of their life. whatever he decides to do it wouldn't change the fact i would buy him a beer and say thanks for the memories Jack.

I honestly believe that NESN balked at replacing Jack with Goucher back in 2017 because they'd just been through the Orsillo/O'Brien situation that completely blew up in their faces, and it scared them away from the prospect of keeping their talented professional young radio guy at the expense of the veteran homer TV announcer.

NESN would've been better with Orsillo and Goucher instead of OB and Jack, they completely botched those couple years.

Watching Bruins classics against Carolina back in 2018. Jack was smooth and not mispronouncing anything. It’s night and day from the games today. They need to make the move now. Give Jack a good send off that is well deserved and give the reigns to Faust.

Oh thank God you pointed out what everyone knows.

You want to respect the man? Do it like this.

Jackd not my cup of tea but let him finish the 100th anniversary season on his terms. He deserves it
Wrong the fans deserve what they are paying for, just like any job, you can do it until you can't. Ok there is my "heartless Christmas" take on Jack Edwards.
